Chai Hoon Park

Person Name: Jae Hoon Park Hymnal Number: 166 Composer of "KAM-SAH" in Sound the Bamboo Park was born in Korea and educated at Union Christian College, Pyengyang, Korea (1921); Tusculum College, Greeneville, Tennessee (1933); Westminster Choir College, Princton, New Jersey (B.Mus.) 1935; M.Mus. 1936), and the College of Wooster, Ohio (D.Mus. 1952). He was professor of music at Union Christian College (1936-1938) and professor, then dean, of Yonsei University (1948-1965). Marion Pope

b. 1928 Hymnal Number: 241 Translator of "Come Now, O Prince of Peace (Ososŏ)" in Sound the Bamboo Marion Pope was a Canadian United Church missionary who spent many years in Korea. She was highly influenced by the missiologist Katharine Hockin, also a United Church missionary who was one of the last western missionaries to leave China after the founding of the People's Republic. Marion was deeply dedicated to expressing the gospel in the cultural context in which it was immersed. She was a gentle but very strong woman who was ahead of her time in her thinking about mission partnership. Robert Faris (co-worker)

Hyun Chul Lee

b. 1973 Person Name: Hyun-chu Lee Hymnal Number: 64 Author of "O God of Great Love (Sarungŭi Chunim)" in Sound the Bamboo Hyun Chul Lee is composer-in-residence of World Vision Korea Children's Choir, and also composer for Euijungbu city choir in Korea. After completed his study in Georgia State University, he went to Westminster Choir College for further study focusing on choral music. His numerous works had been published in several publications, including Oxford University Press. Isao Koizumi

1907 - 1992 Hymnal Number: 242 Arranger of "TŌKYŌ" in Sound the Bamboo Isao Koizumi (b. 1907; d. 1992) graduated from the Osaka University of Commerce in 1932. For the next ten years he taught at that school, was an organist in Tokyo, and then went on to work in the import-export business. He has served as the conductor of the Tokyo Choral Society and edited various hymnals, including The Hymnal 1954 for the United Church of Christ in Japan, The Sunday School Hymnal (1954), and Hymns of Praise (1967 edition). A writer and translator of books and articles on church music, Koizumi has also composed and arranged hymn tunes. He is considered a leading figure in modern Japanese hymnody. Bert Polman

Mildred A. Wiant

1898 - 1998 Person Name: Mildrid A. Wiant Hymnal Number: 135 Translator (English) of "Midnight Stars Make Bright the Sky (Ming-xing can-lan ye wei yang)" in Sound the Bamboo Mildred Kathryn Artz was born in Lancaster, Ohio, in 1898 and attended Ohio Wesleyan University (B.A. 1920). She married Bliss Wiant (2933) and went to Boston. In 1923 the Wiants moved to Peking, China, where Mildred became associate professor of voice at Yenching University. She was instructor of vocal music at Scarritt College (1942-1946; 1951-1962) and at Chung Chi College, Chinese University of Hong Kong (1963-1965).
