1918 - 2000 Meter: 12.11.12.11 with refrain Harmonizer of "TWO COMMANDS" in The Christian Hymnary. Bks. 1-4 John J. Overholt was born to an Amish family of limited means in the state of Ohio in 1918. As a child he was soon introduced to his father's personal collection of gospel songs and hymns, which was to have a marked influence on his later life. With his twin brother Joe, he early was exposed to the Amish-Mennonite tradition hymn-singing and praising worship. An early career in Christian service led to a two-year period of relief work in the country of Poland following World War II. During that interim he began to gather many European songs and hymns as a personal hobby, not realizing that these selections would become invaluable to The Christian Hymnary which was begun in 1960 and completed twelve years later in 1972, with a compilation of 1000 songs, hymns and chorales. (The largest Menn. hymnal). A second hymnal was begun simultaneously in the German language entitled Erweckungs Lieder Nr.1 which was brought to completion in 1986. This hymnal has a total of 200 selections with a small addendum of English hymns. Mr. Overholt married in 1965 to an accomplished soprano Vera Marie Sommers, who was not to be outdone by her husband's creativity and compiled a hymnal of 156 selections entitled Be Glad and Sing, directed to children and youth and first printed in 1986. During this later career of hymn publishing, Mr. Overholt also found time for Gospel team work throughout Europe. At this writing he is preparing for a 5th consecutive tour which he arranges and guides. The countries visited will be Belgium, Switzerland, France, Germany, Poland, USSR and Romania. Mr. Overholt was called to the Christian ministry in 1957 and resides at Sarasota, Florida where he is co-minister of a Beachy Amish-Mennonite Church. May Agnew Stephens

1865 - 1935 Meter: 12.11.12.11 with refrain Composer of "[Do you ever feel down-hearted or discouraged]" Born: 1865, Kingston, Ontario, Canada. Died: March 19, 1935, Nyack, New York. Stephens joined the Salvation Army in New York’s 3 Corps in 1890. She helped edit The War Cry, and worked on the training home staff and in the Candidates Department. Around 1897, she began serving as song leader and pianist at the Gospel Tabernacle with Albert Simpson. Two years later, she helped found the Eighth Avenue Mission, and in 1902 married Harold Stephens (later pastor of the Parkdale Alliance Tabernacle in Toronto, Canada). Harry R. Showalter

1889 - 1992 Meter: 12.11.12.11 with refrain Author of "There Are Two Commands" Showalter, Harry R. (Cressman, Virginia, August 13, 1889--1992). Mennonite. He was from the Old Order horse and buggy church (Mennonite) in Virginia. He remembered the Sunday when the conservatives went to have services at the Bank meetinghouse and found someone had locked the doors. The group of people met under the trees and the ministers preached from the steps of the meetinghouse. The buggies of the older people were brought up close so that the older people could hear. Harry remembered leaning against a tree during the services. Harry was raised in the Harmonia Sacra tradition of music and singing schools. In Ohio the Old Order Pleasant View Mennonite (Wisler) Church, Columbiana, Ohio (Mahoning County), the young people would meet in the homes on Sunday evenings for singing, the singing of hymns. Harry Showalter would be present along with Ezra Kropp to teach the young people in the rudiments of reading music (shaped notes) and the different aspects of good unaccompanied singing. --Wilmer Swope, 16 August 1992, DNAH Archives. William Loperena

1935 - 1996 Meter: 12.11.12.11 with refrain Composer of "SAN ALBERTO (Loperena)" William Loperena, O.P. Father William Loperena was born in Moca, Puerto Rico on December 14, 1935. He was the middle son of Evaristo Loperena Ortega and America Soto Hernández. Raised in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico where he studied at the Colegio San Carlos. He attended the diocesan seminar San Ildefonso in Aibonito, Puerto Rico. Eventually joined the Order of Preachers known as Dominicans on August 16, 1955. Studied philosophy in Dover, Massachusetts, Washington and theology in Nijmegen, Holland. He became an ordained priest in the Netherlands on September 25, 1961. In 1968, he composed a complete Catholic mass infused with cultural elements of Puerto Rico including folk music and deeply rooted traditions which he called Misa Jíbara that was recorded in the studio of the Dominican seminar in Bayamon, PR, and in the Church del Santo Cristo de la Salud in Comerío, PR. Father William Loperena had vast knowledge of music and was a music composer of several genres including classical, folkloric and popular. His contribution to the music is recognized and appreciated throughout Puerto Rico, USA and Latin America, not only in Catholic Churches but also in the Protestant churches. He was also a pianist, poet, playwright, writer, sociologist, and university professor. Helga Rosado Loperena (niece)
