O Sing a Song of Bethlehem

Author: Louis F. Benson Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 64 hymnals Topics: Biblical Places Bethlehem, Nazareth, Galilee Lyrics: 1 O sing a song of Bethlehem, of shepherds watching there, and of the news that came to them from angels in the air: the light that shone on Bethlehem fills all the world today; of Jesus’ birth and peace on earth the angels sing alway. 2 O sing a song of Nazareth, of sunny days of joy, O sing of fragrant flowers’ breath, and of the sinless Boy: for now the flowers of Nazareth in every heart may grow; now spreads the fame of his dear name on all the winds that blow. 3 O sing a song of Galilee, of lake and woods and hill, of him who walked upon the sea and bade the waves be still: for though, like waves on Galilee, dark seas of trouble roll, when faith has heard the Master’s word, falls peace upon the soul. 4 O sing a song of Calvary, its glory and dismay; of him who hung upon the tree, and took our sins away: for he who died on Calvary is risen from the grave, and Christ, our Lord, by heaven adored, is mighty now to save. Scripture: Micah 5:2 Used With Tune: KINGSFOLD

If I Could Visit Bethlehem

Author: Brian Wren Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 2 hymnals Topics: Bethlehem; Bethlehem Lyrics: 1 If I could visit Bethlehem what presents would I bring? If I could see what happened then, what would I say or sing? I wouldn't take a modern toy but gold to pay for bread, some wine to give his parents joy and wool to warm his bed. 2 I'd learn some simple words to speak in Aramaic tongues. I'd cradle him, and kiss his cheek, and say, "I'm glad you've come." If Mary asked me who I was and what her child would do, I wouldn't talk about the cross or tell he all I knew. 3 I'd say, "He'll never hurt or kill, and joy will follow tears. We'll know his name and love him still in twenty hundred years." I cannot visit Bethlehem but what I can, I'll do: I'll love you, Jesus, as my friend, and give my life to you. Scripture: Psalm 30:3 Used With Tune: CAROL STREAM

Brightest and best of the sons of the morning

Author: Bp. R. Heber, 1783-1826 Appears in 912 hymnals Topics: Bethlehem Star of; Bethlehem Visit of Magi to; Star Of Bethlehem Lyrics: 1 Brightest and best of the sons of the morning, Dawn on our darkness, and lend us thine aid; Star of the East, the horizon adorning, Guide where our infant Redeemer is laid. 2 Cold on HIs cradle the dew-drops are shining; Low lies His bed with the beasts of the stall; Angels adore Him, in slumber reclining, Maker, and Monarch, and Saviour of all. 3 Say, shall we yield Him, in costly devotion, Odours of Edom, and offerings divine? Gems of the mountain, and pearls of the ocean, Myrrh from the forest, and gold from the mine? 4 Vainly we offer each ample oblation; Vainly with gifts would His favour secure; Richer by far is the heart's adoration; Dearer to God are the prayers of the poor. I Danced in the Morning

Author: Sydney Carter Meter: Irregular Appears in 52 hymnals Topics: Biblical Places Bethlehem Refrain First Line: Dance, then, wherever you may be Lyrics: 1 I danced in the morning when the world was begun, and I danced in the moon and the stars and the sun, and I came down from heaven and I danced on the earth; at Bethlehem I had my birth. [Refrain:] Dance, then, wherever you may be; I am the Lord of the dance, said he, and I’ll lead you all, wherever you may be, and I’ll lead you all in the dance, said he. 2 I danced for the scribe and the pharisee, but they would not dance and they would not follow me; I danced for the fishermen, for James and John; they came with me and the dance went on. [Refrain] 3 I danced on the Sabbath and I cured the lame; the holy people said it was a shame; they whipped and they stripped and they hung me high, and they left me there on a cross to die. [Refrain] 4 I danced on a Friday when the sky turned black; it’s hard to dance with the devil on your back; they buried my body and they thought I’d gone, but I am the dance and I still go on. [Refrain] 5 They cut me down and I leap up high; I am the life that will never, never die; I’ll live in you if you’ll live in me; I am the Lord of the dance, said he. [Refrain] Used With Tune: LORD OF THE DANCE
