God Is Working His Purpose Out

Author: Arthur Campbell Ainger Meter: Irregular Appears in 94 hymnals Topics: Other Observances World Peace Lyrics: 1 God is working his purpose out As year succeeds to year: God is working his purpose out, And the time is drawing near; Nearer and nearer draws the time, The time that shall surely be, When the earth shall be filled with the glory of God As the waters cover the sea. 2 What can we do to work God's work, To prosper and increase The brotherhood of all mankind, The reign of the Prince of Peace? What can we do to hasten the time, The time that shall surely be, When the earth shall be filled with the glory of God As the waters cover the sea. 3 March we forth in the strength of God, With the banner of Christ unfurled, That the light of the glorious gospel of truth May shine throughout the world: Fight we the fight with sorrow and sin To set their captives free, That the earth may be filled with the glory of God As the waters cover the sea. 4 All we can do is nothing worth Unless God blesses the deed; Vainly we hope for the harvest-tide Till God gives life to the seed; Yet nearer and nearer draws the time, The time that shall surely be, When the earth shall be filled with the glory of God As the waters cover the sea. Amen. Scripture: Ephesians 1:9-11 Used With Tune: PURPOSE

For the Healing of the Nations

Author: Fred Kaan Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.7.7 Appears in 58 hymnals Topics: God's World Justice and Righteousness; God: Image; God: Righteousness; Justice; Peace on Earth; Reconciliation; Righteousness Lyrics: 1 For the healing of the nations, Lord, we pray with one accord; for a just and equal sharing of the things that earth affords; to a life of love in action help us rise and pledge our word, help us rise and pledge our word. 2 Lead us forward into freedom; from despair your world release, that, redeemed from war and hatred, all may come and go in peace. Show us how through care and goodness fear will die and hope increase, fear will die and hope increase. 3 All that kills abundant living, let it from the earth be banned; pride of status, race, or schooling, dogmas that obscure your plan. In our common quest for justice may we hallow life's brief span, may we hallow life's brief span. 4 You, Creator God, have written your great name on humankind; for our growing in your likeness bring the life of Christ to mind, that by our response and service earth its destiny may find, earth its destiny may find. When Will People Cease Their Fighting?

Author: Constance Cherry Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Appears in 5 hymnals Topics: The Church in the World Commitment: Peace and Justice; Peace (World) Lyrics: 1 When will people cease their fighting? When will armies wage no war, nations conquer not their neighbour, weapons idle, used no more? When will guns and bombs be silent? When will captives be set free? All creation groans in longing for the world's true liberty. 2 Floods and earthquakes, drought and famine plague the world with awesome ill, but far greater is war's horror caused by human, stubborn will. Blest are those who, working, praying, purpose in their hearts to be instruments of peace, committed to the nations' harmony. 3 As we strive for peace with vigour, hoping to be shown the way, we are strengthened in the knowledge of a future, perfect day; for we know that deeper, richer peace is ours when Christ shall reign: then will all our swords be plowshares and God's children free from pain. Used With Tune: AUSTRIAN HYMN

Eternal God, Whose Power Upholds

Author: Henry Hallam Tweedy Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 55 hymnals Topics: Other Observances World Peace Lyrics: 1 Eternal God, whose power upholds Both flower and flaming star, To whom there is no here nor there, No time, no near nor far, No alien race, no foreign shore, No child unsought, unknown: O send us forth, your prophets true, To make all lands your own! 2 O God of truth, whom science seeks And reverent souls adore, Illumine every earnest mind Of every clime and shore: Dispel the gloom of error's night, Of ignorance and fear, Until true wisdom from above Shall make life's pathway clear! 3 O God of beauty, oft revealed In dreams of human art, In speech that flows to melody, In holiness of heart: Teach us to ban all ugliness, And all disharmony, Till all shall know the loveliness Of lives made fair and free! 4 O God of righteousness and grace, Seen in the Christ, your Son, Whose life and death reveal your face, By whom your will was done; Help us to spread your gracious reign Till greed and hate shall cease, And kindness dwell in human hearts, And all the earth find peace! Amen. Scripture: Psalm 54:4 Used With Tune: FOREST GREEN
