1849 - 1917 Person Name: John Hunter, 1848-1917 Author of "Dear Master, in whose life I see" in The Methodist Hymn-Book with Tunes Born: July 12, 1848, Aberdeen, Scotland. Died: September 15, 1917, Hampstead, London, England. Hunter was educated at Mansfield College, Oxford, and became a Congregational minister. He served at York (1871), Hull (1882), and Trinity Church, Glasgow (1887). He moved to King’s Weigh House Chapel, London, in 1901, returning to Trinity, Glasgow, three years later. A breakdown in health compelled him to resign in 1913. 1795 - 1862 Person Name: Edward Swaine Author of "Lord Jesus, Let Thy Watchful Care" in The Cyber Hymnal Swaine, Edward, born at London, Sep. 21, 1795. He was for about 40 years a deacon of Craven Chapel (Congregational) under the pastorate of Dr. Leifchild and others; one of the directors of the London Missionary Society, and founder and chairman of the Pastors' Insurance Aid Society. He died April 22, 1862. (Miller's Singers and Songs, 1869, p. 441.) Mr. Swaine wrote several tracts, and also printed for private circulation The Hand of God, A Fragment, with Poems, Hymns, and Versions of Psalms, 1889. His hymns, "Hail! blessed communion of love" (Holy Communion), and "Lord Jesus, let Thy watchful care" (For Emigrants), were written in 1855 for the New Congregational Hymn Book, and given therein, 1859. -- John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology (1907)

William Bright

1824 - 1901 Author of "He Sat to Watch O'er Customs Paid" in Rejoice in the Lord Bright, William, D.D., born at Doncaster, Dec. 14, 1824, and educated at University College, Oxford, where he graduated B.A. (first class in Lit. Hum.) in 1846, M.A. in 1849. In 1847 he was Johnson's Theological Scholar: and in 1848 he also obtained the Ellerton Theological Essay prize. He was elected Fellow in 1847, and subsequently became Tutor of his College. Taking Holy Orders in 1848, he was for some time Tutor at Trinity College, Glenalmond; but in 1859 he returned to Oxford, and in 1868 became Regius Professor of Ecclesiastical History and Canon of Christ Church. His publications include:— (1) Ancient Collects, selected from various Rituals, 1857, 2nd ed., 1862; (2) History of the Church from the Edict of Milan to the Council of Chalcedon, 1860; (3) Sermons of St. Leo the Great on the Incarnation, translated with notes, 1862; (4) Faith and Life, 1864-66; (5) Chapters of Early English Church History, 1877; (6) Private Prayers for a Week; (7) Family Prayers for a Week; (8) Notes on the Canons of the First tour Councils. He has also edited (9) Eusebius' Ecclesiastical History, 1872; (10) St. Athanasius's Oration against the Arians, &c, 1873; (11) Socrates' Ecclesiastical Hist.; (12) with the Rev. P. G. Medd, Latin Version of the Prayer Book, 1865-69. His poetical works are, (13) Athanasius and other Poems, by a Fellow of a College, 1858; and (14) Hymns & Other Poems, 1866; revised and enlarged, 1874. The last two works contain original hymns and translations. To the hymn-books he is known through his original compositions, seven of which are given in the revised edition of Hymns Ancient & Modern and some are found elsewhere. In addition to “And now the wants are told," and "At Thy feet, O Christ, we lay" (q.v.), there are:— 1. And now, 0 Father, mindful of the love. Holy Communion. Published in Hymns Ancient & Modern1875. Part of a composition in his Hymns, &c. 2. Behold us, Lord, before Thee met. Confirmation. Printed in the Monthly Packet, Nov. 1867, and, in a revised form, in the Appendix to Hymns Ancient & Modern, 1868. 3. How oft, O Lord, Thy face hath shone. St. Thomas. Published in Hymns Ancient & Modern, 1875. 4. Once, only once, and once for all. Holy Communion. Written in 1865, and published in his Hymns, &c, 1866, in 6 stanzas of 4 lines. It was given in the Appendix to Hymns Ancient & Modern, 1868; the new edition, 1875, and several other collections. 5. We know Thee, Who Thou art. Prayer after Pardon. Written in 1865, and published in his Hymns , &c, 1866, in 5 stanzas of 4 lines. It was included in the Appendix to Hymns Ancient & Modern, 1868, &c. Canon Bright's hymns merit greater attention than they have received at the hands of compilers. H. M. Gunn

1817 - 1886 Person Name: Henry M. Gunn, 1817-1886 Author of "To Realms Beyond the Sounding Sea" in The Cyber Hymnal Gunn, Henry Mayo, was born March 25, 1817, at Chard, Somerset, and educated at Mill Hill School, and at University College. He held several pastorates, beginning with Basingstoke in 1841, and closing with Sevenoaks in 1881. He d. May 21, 1886. He published various works, chiefly descriptive of the Nonconformist Churches and their principles. Besides translating some of the earlier Greek and Latin hymns for the Excelsior edited by the late Dr. James Hamilton, he wrote many hymns, including:— 1. Higher, higher to the Cross. The Cross of Christ. Appeared, in 6 stanzas of 4 lines, in the 1866 Supplement to the collection used in the Redland Congregational Church, Bristol. It is also issued in sheet form. 2. Our fathers were high-minded men. Fidelity to Principle. This was suggested by the disruption of the Church of Scotland in 1843. It was published in the Alton Sunday School Collection, 1844, in 3 stanzas of 8 lines. It is in several hymn-books, including the Congregational Union Book of Praise for Children, 1881. 3. To realms beyond the sounding sea. Prayer on behalf of Colonists. Appeared in the New Congregational Hymn Book, 1859, No. 903, in 4 stanzas of 4 lines. 4. We want no priest but Jesus. Priesthood of Christ. Printed for the annual meeting of the Wilts Congregational Union, 1872. Henry Elliott Fox

1841 - 1926 Person Name: H. E. Fox (b. 1841) Author of "Send forth the Gospel! Let it run" in A Missionary Hymn Book Fox, Henry Elliott, M.A., son of Henry Watson Fox, born at Masulipatam, S. India, on Oct. 21, 1841, and educated at Harrow and Trinity College, Cambridge; B.A. (3rd class Cl. Trip.) 1864; M.A. 1869. Ordained in 1869, he was Curate of St. Ebbe, Oxford, 1869-73; Vicar of Christ Ch., Westminster, 1873-82, and of St. Nicholas, Durham, 1882-1895. From 1895 he has been Hon. Sec. of the C.M.S. He is also Commiss. for Uganda (1890), and Mombasa (1900). His deep interest in Foreign Missions is well known. He became a Preb. of St. Paul's in 1901. His hymns in common use include the following:— 1. 0 King of glory, God of grace. [Foreign Missions.] Written in 1899 for the centenary of the C.M.S., and included in the Church Missionary Society Hymn Book of the same year. 2. Send forth the Gospel! Let it run.
