Richard D. Wetzel

Wetzel (b. 1935) received the Ph.D. in Musicology from the University of Pittsburgh, studying under D�nes Bartha, Theodore Finney, and Robert Snow. He joined the faculty of Ohio University in 1970. Dr. Wetzel's area of emphasis is American Music, and he is published in The New Grove Dictionary of American Music and American National Biography. His book, Frontier Musicians, is a definitive work on German-American music of the 18th and 19th centuries. Wetzel is also a composer and hymnologist, and his liturgical music is found in numerous denominational hymnals, including those published by the Episcopal and Presbyterian churches and the United Church of Christ. Professor Wetzel was the recipient of Ohio University's Outstanding University Professor Award and is currently Chair of Graduate Studies in the School of Music. Jack Schrader

His association with Hope began in 1978. A 1964 graduate of Moody Bible Institute of Chicago, where he majored in Voice and Organ, he also received the Bachelor of Music Education degree from the University of Nebraska (1966). Further studies in theology culminated in Jack's ordination by the Evangelical Free Church of America (1975). Born in St. Louis, Missouri, he now resides in Wheaton, Illinois, with his wife, Karen. They have three children, Beth, Jonathan and Joel, and currently three grandchildren. Jack is the best selling choral composer in the Hope catalog. In addition to choral music Jack has published collections for keyboardists, instrumentalists and vocal soloists. He was a member of the editorial committee for Hope's most recent hymnal, WORSHIP & REJOICE (2001), in which he has 24 hymn credits. Seth Calvisius

Gorsleben, Thuringia, Germany, 1556; d. Leipzig, Germany, 1615) became known as the leading music theoretician of his time. He was educated at the universities of Helmstedt and Leipzig and spent much of his life teaching and writing about music history and theory. He taught at the Fürstenschule in Schulpforta from 1582 to 1594 and at the University of Leipzig from 1594 until his death. He also served as cantor at several churches. In addition to his theoretical work, Calvisius wrote psalm and hymn tunes and anthems, and he edited the first hymn book published in Leipzig, Harmonia cantionum ecclesiasticarum (1597). Bert Polman
