Blessed Quietness

Author: Manie P. Ferguson Hymnal: CH1995 #267 (1995) Meter: 8.7.8.7 with refrain First Line: Joys are flowing like a river Refrain First Line: Blessed quietness, holy quietness Lyrics: 1 Joys are flowing like a river, since the Comforter has come; Christ abides with us forever, makes the trusting heart his home. Refrain: Blessed quietness, holy quietness, what assurance in my soul. On the stormy sea, Jesus speaks to me, and the billows cease to roll. 2 Bringing life and health and gladness, all around this heavenly Guest, banished unbelief and sadness, changed our weariness to rest. [Refrain] 3 Like the rain that falls from heaven, like the sunlight from the sky, so the Spirit too is given, coming on us from on high. [Refrain] 4 See, a fruitful field is growing, blessed fruit of righteousness; and the streams of life are flowing in the lonely wilderness. [Refrain] 5 What a wonderful salvation, when we always see Christ's face, what a peaceful habitation, what a quiet resting place. Of All the Spirit's Gifts to Me

Author: Fred Pratt Green Hymnal: CH1995 #270 (1995) Meter: 8.8.8.7 Lyrics: 1 Of all the Spirit's gifts to me, I pray that I may never cease to take and treasure most these three: love, joy, and peace. 2 The Spirit shows me love's the root of every gift sent from above, of every flower, of every fruit, that God is love. 3 The Spirit shows if I possess a love no evil can destroy; however great is my distress, then this is joy. 4 Though what's ahead is mystery, and life itself is ours on lease, each day the Spirit says to me: "Go forth in peace!" 5 We go in peace, but made aware that, in a needy world like this, our clearest purpose is to share love, joy, and peace. The Church

Hymnal: CH1995 #271 (1995) First Line: Within the whole family of God on earth Lyrics: Within the whole family of God on earth, the church appears wherever believers in Jesus the Christ are gathered in his name. Transcending all barriers within the human family, the one church manifests itself in ordered communities bound together for worship, fellowship, and service; in varied structures for mission, witness, and mutual accountability; and for the nurture and renewal of its members. The nature of the church, given by Christ, remains constant through the generations, yet in faithfulness to its nature, it continues to discern God’s vision and to adapt its mission and structures to the needs of a changing world. All dominion in the church belongs to Jesus, its Lord and head, and any exercise of authority in the church on earth stands under his judgment. The Church's One Foundation

Author: Samuel J. Stone; Laurence Hall Stookey Hymnal: CH1995 #272 (1995) Meter: 7.6.7.6 D Lyrics: 1 The Church’s one foundation is Jesus Christ our Lord; we are his new creation by water and the Word; from heaven he came and sought us to be his holy bride; with his own blood he bought us, and for our life he died. [Stanza 2 under copyright] 3 Though with a scornful wonder the world sees us oppressed, by schisms rent asunder, by heresies distressed, yet saints their watch are keeping, their cry goes up, “How long?” And soon the night of weeping shall be the morn of song. 4 Mid toil and tribulation, and tumult of our war, we wait the consummation of peace forevermore, till with the vision glorious our longing eyes are blest, and the great church victorious shall be the Church at rest. 5 We now on earth have union with God, the Three in One, and mystic sweet communion with those whose rest is won. Oh, happy ones and holy! Lord, give us grace that we like them, the meek and lowly, on high may dwell with thee. Built on the Rock

Author: Nikolai F. S. Grundtvig; Carl Doving Hymnal: CH1995 #273 (1995) Meter: 8.8.8.8.8.8.8 First Line: Built on the rock the church does stand Lyrics: 1 Built on the rock the church shall stand even when steeples are falling; Christ builds he church in every land; bells still are chiming and calling, calling the young and old to rest, calling the souls of those distressed, longing for life everlasting. 2 Not just in temples made with hands God, the Most Holy, is dwelling. Hidden from sight God's temple stands, all earthly temples excelling. The one whom heavens cannot contain chose here among us to remain, built in our bodies a temple. 3 We are a house of living stones built for God's own habitation; God fills our hearts, these humble thrones, granting us life and salvation. Were two or three to pray for grace, Christ in their midst would show his face, blessings upon them bestowing. Christians, We Have Met to Worship

Author: George Atkins Hymnal: CH1995 #277 (1995) Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Lyrics: 1 Christians, we have met to worship and adore the living God; will you pray with all your power, while we try to preach the word? All is vain unless the Spirit of the Holy One comes down; Christians, pray, and holy manna will be showered all around. 2 Is there here a trembling jailer, seeking grace and filled with fears? Is there here a weeping Mary pouring forth a flood of tears? Tell them all about the Savior, how in Christ the lost are found. Pray, oh pray, and holy manna will be scattered all around. 3 Let us love our God supremely, let us love each other, too; let us pray for all earth's people till our God makes all things new. Christ will call us home to heaven, at the table we'll sit down; Christ will welcome us and serve us living manna all around.
