William Tidd Matson

1833 - 1899 Person Name: William T. Matson Author of "Lord, I Was Blind" in The Worshiping Church Matson, William Tidd, was born at West Hackney, London, Oct. 17, 1833. He was educated first under the Rev. J. M. Gould, and then at St. John's College, Cambridge. Subsequently he studied under Professor Nesbitt, at the Agricultural and Chemical College, Kennington. In 1853 he underwent a great spiritual change. Leaving the Church of England, he first joined the Methodist New Connexion body, and then the Congregationalists. After the usual theological training, he entered the ministry, and held several pastorates, including Havant, Hants; Gosport; Highbury; Portsmouth, and others. His poetical works include:— (1) A Summer Evening Reverie, and Other Poems, 1857; (2) Poems, 1858; (3) Pleasures of the Sanctuary, 1865; (4) The Inner Life, 1866; (5) Sacred Lyrics, 1870; (6) Three Supplemental Hymns, &c, 1872; (7) The World Redeemed, 1881, &c. Several of Matson's hymns have been given in Allon's Supplemental Hymns; Horder's Congregational Hymns; The Baptist Hymnal; Dale's English Hymn Book.; Barrett's Congregational Church Hymnal, 1887, and others. The best known are:— 1. Father, of all, Whose wondrous power. Prayer to the Holy Trinity. 2. Glory, glory to God in the highest. Christmas. 3. God is in His temple. Divine Worship. 4. I'm but a little child. A Child's Prayer. 5. In whom shall I find comfort? God, the Source of Comfort. 6. Lord, I was blind, I could not see. Christ, the Life of Men. 7. O blessed Life, the heart at rest. Christ the Life of Men. 8. Teach me, O Lord, Thy holy way. Divine Guidance desired. Mr Matson's hymns show a considerable mastery of the forms of hymnic expression, but are somewhat lacking in lyric energy. Those written for use with German chorales are excellent efforts, and rank with his best work. Taken as a whole his hymns are far above the average, and deserve wide acknowledgment. [Rev. W. Indianapolis, Indiana, February 9, 1932) was the music editor of *Great Songs of the Church, Revised*, published by ACU Press in 1986. He earned a B.S. degree in music education from Abilene Christian University, a masters degree in music composition and theory from the University of North Texas, and a Ph.D. in choral literature from the University of Iowa. Boyd edited *Children, Rejoice!* (Sweet, 1979) and he authored *Rehearsal Guide for the Choral Director* (Parker, 1970) and *Leading the Lord's Singing* (Quality, 1981). Carolyn Jennings

b. 1936 Person Name: Carolyn Jennings, b. 1936 Arranger of "O WALY WALY" in With One Voice Carolyn Jennings (born August 16, 1936) is a Professor Emerita of Music at St. Olaf College where she taught for many years and also served in administrative roles, including Chair of the Music Department and Associate Dean for the Fine Arts. Carolyn Jennings is a graduate of the University of Iowa with a Bachelor of Arts degree in music magna cum laude and the University of Michigan where she received her Master of Music degree as a Woodrow Wilson Fellow. She also served as a church musician for over thirty years, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Northfield, Minnesota. Over many years she has served on arts advisory panels, as a workshop presenter, and in leadership roles in several professional organizations. She has been active in promoting the use of inclusive language in texts for singing, and has worked to heighten awareness of how language shapes as well as expresses thought. Her compositions and arrangements include works for voices, orchestra, and piano. She particularly enjoys composing for voices. Among her many commissioned works are a children's musical, a choral song cycle, a composition for the Minnesota Aids Quilt Songbook, and many compositions for church, school and community choirs. She has received major grants from the Composers Commissioning Program through the Minnesota Composers Forum. Choral compositions and arrangements by Carolyn Jennings are widely sung by church, community, college and school choirs. Her publications include over a hundred choral compositions and arrangements, a number of text translations, contributions to several hymnals, and articles for professional journals. She has been active in the American Choral Directors Association, the Music Teachers National Association, the Minnesota Composers Forum, the Association of Lutheran Church Musicians, and as a guest conductor and workshop leader. --apimusic.org/composers

John Weaver

b. 1937 Harmonizer of "O WALY WALY (GIFT OF LOVE)" in Voices United Dr. John Weaver Organist/Music Director, Emeritus John Weaver retired at the end of May 2005, after 35 years of ministry as Director of Music and Organist at Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church in New York City. During his tenure here, he also served as Head of the Organ Department at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia from 1972 to 2003 and Chair of the Organ Department at the Juilliard School from 1987 to 2004. The American Organist named him among the 101 most notable organists of the 20th century. Weaver traces his love for the "King of Instruments" back to his childhood. Born in the Eastern Pennsylvania town of Mauch Chunk (now called Jim Thorpe), his first introduction to music was through the organ at the First Presbyterian Church where his father was the pastor. His formal musical studies began at the age of six in Baltimore's Peabody Conservatory when it was discovered that he had perfect pitch. Shortly thereafter he acquired an old harmonium that stimulated his desire to learn to play the organ. At the age of fourteen he began organ study with Richard Ross and George Markey, and the same year he also became organist of a Baltimore church and played his first organ recital. In 1989 John Weaver was honored by The Peabody Conservatory when he was presented with Peabody's Distinguished Alumni Award. He has received honorary Doctor of Music degrees from Westminster College, New Wilmington PA, and The Curtis Institute of Music. He was also elected a member of the North American Academy of Liturgy. John Weaver's undergraduate study was at The Curtis Institute from which he graduated in 1959 as a student of Alexander McCurdy. That year he was appointed Director of Music at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in New York City, a post he held for eleven years. During this time he spent two years in the Army as organist/choir-director of the Post Chapel at the United States Military Academy at West Point, and earned a Master of Sacred Music degree from Union Theological Seminary, studying with Robert Baker. In 1968 he founded a highly successful Bach Cantata Series at Holy Trinity, conducting his choir and orchestra in two seasons of these works. At these services he also played most of the major organ works of Bach and numerous chorale-preludes. At the Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church he annually conducts a large concert choir, The St. Andrew Chorale, in several major works with orchestra. In addition to his teaching at The Curtis Institute and The Juilliard School, he has served Westminster Choir College, Union Theological seminary and the Manhattan School of Music. He has written numerous articles for organ and church music magazines and has served as President of the Presbyterian Association of Musicians. Dr. Weaver has been active as a concert organist since coming under management in 1959. He has played throughout the USA, Canada, Western Europe, the United Kingdom, and Brazil. Each year finds him in many different parts of the country playing recital programs drawn from his large repertoire of memorized works from every important era and national school of organ literature. His wife, Marianne, an excellent flutist whose teachers include Kincaid and Rampal, frequently adds an extra and very special stop to the organ by appearing on these programs. John Weaver has performed on national television and radio network programs in the US and Germany. He has made recordings for Aeolian-Skinner, The Wicks Organ Company, the Klais Orgelbau of Germany, a CD on Gothic Records for the Schantz Organ Company, and a recent recording on the Pro Organo label on the new Reuter organ at University Presbyterian Church in Seattle. His published compositions for organ, chorus/organ and flute/organ are widely performed. Weaver has made several concerto appearances with the Portland, Maine Symphony, the Musica Sacra Orchestra and the Harrisburg Symphony. He has played solo recitals at numerous regional and national conventions of the American Guild of Organists as well as the 1987 Internationalhttp://www.mapc.com Congress of Organists in Cambridge, England.
