Stupendous Mystery!

Author: Charles Wesley, 1707-1788 Meter: 6.6.8.6 D Appears in 1 hymnal First Line: Stupendous mystery Lyrics: 1. Stupendous mystery! God in our flesh is seen (While angels ask, how can it be?) And dwells with sinful men! Our nature He assumes, That we may His retrieve; He comes, to our dead world He comes, That all thro’ Him may live. 2. The true, eternal Word To us a Child is given, The sovereign God, th’Almighty Lord, Who fills both earth and Heaven; Our God on earth appears To take our sins away, And guide us thro’ the vale of tears To realms of endless day. Used With Tune: ACCRA Text Sources: The Unpublished Poetry of Charles Wesley, by S. T. Kimbrough, Jr., & Oliver A. Beckerlegge (Nashville, Tennessee: Abingdon Press, 1992), pages 106-7

O where shall rest be found

Author: James Montgomery Meter: 6.6.8.6 D Appears in 646 hymnals Lyrics: O where shall rest be found, Rest for the weary soul? 'Twere vain the ocean-depths to sound, Or pierce to either pole; The world can never give The bliss for which we sigh; 'Tis not the whole of life to live; Nor all of death to die. 214 Beyond this vale of tears, There is a life above, Unmeasured by the flight of years; And all that life is love;-- There is a death, whose pang Ontlasts the fleeting breath; O what eternal horrors hang Around "the second death!" Lord God of truth and grace, Teach us that death to shun, Lest we be banish'd from Thy face, And evermore undone: Here would we end our quest; Alone are found in Thee, The life of perfect love,--the rest Of immortality. Ye Men of Israel, Hear

Author: Charles Wesley Meter: 6.6.8.6 D Appears in 1 hymnal Lyrics: 1. Ye men of Israel, hear The words of truth and grace, Jesus did in the flesh appear To save a sinking race; A man of God approved, By signs and wonders known, Jesus, the Father’s well-beloved, The co-eternal Son. 2. The Prince of Life and Peace, By Heav’n’s supreme decree Delivered up, ye dared to seize, And nail Him to the tree; Taken by wicked hands, And crucified and slain; But God hath loosed the mortal bands, And raised Him up again. 3. It was not possible That death should keep his prey; God would not leave His soul in hell, Or let His flesh decay: His flesh reposed in hope Of the third joyful morn, And then the Father raised Him up, And God again was born. 4. This Jesus is restored To life by power divine; We all proclaim our living Lord, And in His praises join: We are His witnesses, He is gone up on high, Exalted to His native place, He lives no more to die. 5. Again at God’s right hand Our Lord is called to sit, Till all who now His sway withstand Are crushed beneath His feet: Be it to Israel’s seed, To every sinner known, God hath performed His oath indeed, Hath glorified His Son. 6. Sinners, believe He died, And rose to buy your peace; Jesus the Christ, the Crucified, The Lord of Life confess; Repent in Jesus’ name, Believe and be forgiven, And take the Holy Ghost ye claim, And rise with us to Heaven.
