Comfort, Comfort Ye My People

Author: Johannes Olearius; Miss Catherine Winkworth Meter: 8.7.8.7.7.7.8.8 Appears in 128 hymnals Scripture: Isaiah 62:10 Lyrics: 1 Comfort, comfort ye my people, Speak ye peace, thus saith our God; Comfort those who sit in darkness, Mourning 'neath their sorrows' load; Speak ye to Jerusalem Of the peace that waits for them; Tell her that her sins I cover, And her warfare now is over. 2 For the herald's voice is crying In the desert far and near, Bidding all men to repentance, Since the kingdom now is here. O that warning cry obey! Now prepare for God a way! Let the valleys rise to meet Him, And the hills bow down to greet Him. 3 Make ye straight what long was crooked, Make the rougher places plain: Let your hearts be true and humble, As befits His holy reign, For the glory of the Lord Now o'er earth is shed abroad, And all flesh shall see the token That His Word is never broken. Amen. Topics: Church Year Advent; The Day of John the Baptist; Comfort; Kingdom of Christ; National Used With Tune: WERDE MUNTER, MEIN GEMUTHE

Indulgent Sovereign of the skies

Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 64 hymnals Scripture: Isaiah 62:6 Lyrics: 1 Indulgent Sovereign of the skies, And wilt thou bow thy gracious ear While feeble mortals raise their cries, Wilt thou, the great Jehovah, hear? 2 How shall thy servants give thee rest, Till Zion's mouldering walls thou raise? Till thine own power shall stand confess'd, And make Jerusalem a praise? 3 Look down, O God, with pitying eye, And view the desolation round; See what wide realms in darkness lie, And hurl their idols to the ground. 4 Lord, let the gospel-trumpet blow, And call the nations from afar, Let all the isles their Saviour know, And earth's remotest ends draw near. 5 Let Babylon's proud altars shake, And light invade her darkest gloom; The yoke of iron bondage break The yoke of Satan and of Rome. 6 On all our souls let grace descend, Like heavenly dew in copious showers, That we may call our God our friend, That we may hail salvation ours. 7 Then shall each age and rank agree. United shouts of joy to raise: And Zion made a praise by thee, To thee shall render back the praise. Topics: God entreated for Zion; Kingdom and Church of Christ State of Decline

Lift Every Voice and Sing

Author: James W. Johnson Meter: 6.6.10.6.6.10.14.14.6.6.10 Appears in 48 hymnals Scripture: Isaiah 62 First Line: Lift ev’ry voice and sing Lyrics: 1 Lift ev’ry voice and sing, till earth and heaven ring, ring with the harmonies of liberty. Let our rejoicing rise high as the list’ning skies, let it resound loud as the rolling sea. Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us. Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us. Facing the rising sun of our new day begun, let us march on till victory is won. 2 Stony the road we trod, bitter the chast’ning rod, felt in the days when hope unborn had died; yet with a steady beat, have not our weary feet come to the place for which our people sighed? We have come over a way that with tears has been watered. We have come, treading our path thro’ the blood of the slaughtered, out from the gloomy past, till now we stand at last where the bright gleam of our bright star is cast. 3 God of our weary years, God of our silent tears, thou who hast brought us thus far on the way, thou who hast by thy might led us into the light, keep us forever in the path, we pray. Lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met thee; lest our hearts, drunk with the wine of the world, we forget thee; shadowed beneath thy hand, may we forever stand, true to our God, true to our native land.
