Comes from several generations of ministers. He was educated at Harvard (B.A. 1935), Boston University School of Theology (S.T.B. 1941), and the University of Southern California (Ph.D. 1957). Minister of the Neighborhood Church, Pasedena (1943-1959), and the Smithfield United Church in Pittsburgh from 1959-1975. Elisabeth H. Burrowes

Elder in the Presbyterian Church. --Twelve New Hymns for Children, The Hymn Society, DNAH Archives ============================ [Burrowes] is active in St. John's Presbyterian Church in Berkeley. --Twelve New Hymns for Children, 1965. Used by permission. ============================ Elisabeth Burrowes is a resident of Berkeley, California, formerly of Englewood, New Jersey. She is the mother of five children, has a number of grandchildren, is the author of two books and numerous poems. Her hymn "God of the ages by whose hand", published by the Hymn Society of America in 1958, will appear in the forthcoming new edition of The Methodist Hymnal. Mrs. Burrowes, an ordained Elder in the Presbyterian Church, has recently affiliated with The South Berkeley Community Church, an inter-racial Church which is doing a deeply dedicated and inspiring work. Mrs. Burrowes wrote the Anniversary Hymn, "Almighty God, we pray thee still to guide us", for its celebration in 1964. Her married name is Mrs. Paul deNyse Burrowes. She is also the author of one of the Children's Hymns recently published by the Hymn Society entitled "Our Father, who dost lead us." --Ten New Hymns on the Ministry, 1966. Used by permission.

Christian Burke

1849 - 1944 Hymnal Number: d283 Author of "Lord of life and King of glory" in The Methodist Hymnal Burke, Christian, was born in London Sept. 18, 1859, and now (1906) resides in Highgate, London. Her earlier verse, contributed to various periodicals, was collected as The Flowering of the Almond-Tree and other Poems, 1896, revised edition 1901. Her hymn “Lord of Life and King of Glory” [Mothers' Societies] was written in Dec. 1903, and first printed in the Treasury, Feb. 1901, p. 453, headed "Prize Hymn for a Mothers’ Union Service." James Arnold Blaisdell

1867 - 1957 Hymnal Number: d55 Author of "Beneath the forms of outward rite" in The Methodist Hymnal James Arnold Blaisdell was born in Beloit, Wisconsin, December 15, 1867. He graduated from Beloit College in 1899 and became a minister, then returned to Beloit College as Chair of the Bible Department and director of the library. In 1910 he became of Pomona College (California). The college grew under his leadership. In 1921 he made the decision to cap enrollment to keep the college small. He soon developed the vision of small liberal arts colleges sharing common facilities. He became head of the Claremont Colleges Consortium in 1927. Dianne Shapiro, from Anderson, Seth. John W. Shackford

1878 - 1969 Hymnal Number: d376 Author of "O thou who art the shepherd" in The Methodist Hymnal John W. Shackford is a retired Methodist minister now in his eighty-ninth year, living in Waynesville, North Carolina. He has had a distinguished career centering in the activities of the Methodist Episcopal Church South. He served on the staff of the General Sunday School Board of that Church, and was one of the founders of the International Council of Religious Education. He has served pastorates in Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina. He is the author of various hymns including one of the Hymn Society's Christian Education Hymns and one of the Society's Social Welfare Hymns. ----Ten New Hymns on the Ministry, 1966.
