Johann Rudolf Ahle

1625 - 1673 Person Name: J. R. Ahle, 1625-1673 Hymnal Number: 625 Composer of "LIEBSTER JESU (DESSAU)" in Common Praise Johann Rudolph Ahle, b. Mühlhausen, 1625; Ahle studied theology at Erfurt University. Little is known about his musical education, but be became well known as an organist while he was in Erfurt. He returned to Mühlhausen and became an organist at St. Blasius Church, he composed organ music but is know for his sacred choral music. He was the father of Johann Georg, who was also a composer and succeeded his father as organist at St. Blasius Church. Gerald Hocken Knight was born on 27 July 1908 in Par, Cornwall, and was educated at Truro Cathedral School and Peterhouse, Cambridge. He was an articled organ pupil of Hubert Stanley Middleton at Truro Cathedral. He was appointed a Fellow of the Royal School of Church Music in 1964. John Wainwright

Jean-Baptiste de Santeul

1630 - 1697 Person Name: Jean de Santeul, 1630-1697 Hymnal Number: 212 Author of "Captains of the saintly band" in Common Praise Santeüil, Jean-Baptiste de, was born in Paris of a good family on May 12, 1630. He was one of the regular Canons of St. Victor, at Paris, and, under the name of Santolius Victorinus, was distinguished as a writer of Latin poetry. Many of his hymns appeared in the Cluniac Breviary 1686, and the Paris Breviaries 1680 and 1736, and several have been translated into English, and are in common use in Great Britain and America. He was very jocose in disposition and singular in his habits. When on a journey he died at Dijon, Aug. 5, 1697. His Hymni Sacri et Novi were published at Paris in 1689, and again, enlarged, in 1698. W. J. Sparrow-Simpson

1859 - 1952 Person Name: W. J. Sparrow-Simpson, 1859-1952 Hymnal Number: 277 Author of "All for Jesus, all for Jesus" in Common Praise Simpson, William John Sparrow, M.A., was educated at Trin. College, Camb., B.A. 1882, M.A. 1886. Ordained in 1882, he held various appointments until 1904, when he became Chaplain to St. Mary's Hospital, Great Ilford. He has published several works, including a Memoir of Dr. W. S. Simpson, 1899. He contributed "All for Jesus—all for Jesus" (All for Jesus), and "Jesus, the Crucified, prays for me" (Passiontide), to C. W. A. Brooke's Additional Hymns, 1901). These hymns originally appeared in Sir J.
