Diana Kodner

Diana Kodner Gokce holds a double M.M. in Music from Northwestern University specializing in voice/opera and conducting. As an undergraduate, Diana was a flute major at Northwestern University. She has been a flutist in the Minnesota Orchestra, performing under Leonard Slatkin, Stanislaw Skrowaczewski, and Jean-Pierre Rampal, to name but a few conductors. At the age of 17 Diana conducted the Minnesota Orchestra in a young people's concert as winner of the Urban Arts conducting competition. For six years Diana was conductor and musical director of the Mozart Sinfonia. She has been a conductor of choirs at Loyola University, National-Louis University, and Holy Name Cathedral in Chicago. Diana has authored several books including Handbook for Cantors (Liturgy Training Publications) and Sing God a Simple Song Volumes I and II (Treehaus Communications). She was the editor of A Sourcebook about Music and the Gather Comprehensive Hymnal, first edition (G.I.A. Publications). She was also the conductor for the choral recordings: Catholic Classics, V.I and II (G.I.A. Publications) and both flute and vocal soloist on the Taize recording "Wait for the Lord," from the same publisher. Diana was senior editor of Clavier Magazine and the editor of both Flute Talk and Flute Explorer magazines (The Instrumentalist Company). As editor of Flute Talk Diana interviewed the great flutist Sir James Galway and Jazz flutist Steve Kujala. Most recently Diana was music director for the DVD and CD series from Egghead Learning Systems: As I Grow, for children from birth to 18 months. For 11 years she was the music specialist at Baker Demonstration School in Wilmette, Illinois, and performed as a flutist in the chamber ensemble "Diletto Musicale." Beginning with the 2012-2013 school year, she is the middle school music teacher at The Frances Xavier Warde School, Holy Name Cathedral Campus in Chicago. Diana Kodner

She studied music at St. Katharine's College in Liverpool, UK and at Trinity College, London. She was a violinist, pianist, and teacher. She married Philip Potter, general secretary of the World Council of Churches in Geneva. Through her husband she met Fred Kaan and composed tunes for Kaan's texts, as well as other hymn tunes. Ernest Edwin Ryden

At present he is pastor of Emanuel Lutheran Church in North Grosvenordale, Connecticut. This is the latest of a long series of services he has rendered in the Lutheran Church. For twenty-seven years he was editor of "The Lutheran Companion," the official organ of the former Augustana Lutheran Church. His contributions to hymnody were many. He was a member of the Committee which created the Augustana Hymnal of 1925 to which he contributed eight original hymns and translations. He was co-editor of the Junior Hymnal for which he wrote a number of hymns. He was secretary of the committee which prepared the Service Book and Hymnal. Here again he has contributed new hymns and translations. He is the author of two volumes, "The Story of Our Hymns," and "The Story of Christian Hymnody." In 1949 he was made a Knight of the Royal Order of the North Star by the King of Sweden for his work in the field of hymnological research. Died: December 14, 1968, at his home in Louisville, Kentucky. Buried: Cave Hill Cemetery, Louisville, Kentucky. Jorgenson was the son of Danish immigrants. His father, Christopher Jorgenson, had been a soldier in the personal guard of the king of Denmark (probably Christian IX), and his mother a seamstress to the queen. The 1900 census shows the family living in Boone County, Nebraska. As a young man, Elmer led singing in churches in and around Albion, Nebraska, and in nearby Missouri. He was directing the music department at Western Bible and Literary College by 1908. In 1910, he and his wife Irene moved to Louisville, Kentucky. He was a member of the Churches of Christ.
