C. C. Case

1843 - 1918 Composer of "[Behold a Stranger at the door]" in Choice Songs Charles Clinton Case USA 1843-1918. Born in Linesville, PA, his family moved to Gustavus, OH, when he was four. His father was an accomplished violinist, but a neighbor gave him a small violin when he was nine, and he mastered it before he could read music. At age 16 he went to singing school (without parental consent), borrowing the money from a neighbor. C. A. Bentley, a prominent conductor, was his first vocal music instructor, and William Bradbury's “Jubilee” was the school textbook. For three winters in a row, he attended Bentley's singing school, working his father's farm in the summer. He married Annie Williams. In 1866 he studied music in Boston with B. F. Baker. He also studied under George Root, Horatio Palmer, Philip Bliss, George Webb, and others, hymnwriters in their own right. Soon after, Case began teaching music, and when James McGranahan moved two miles from his home, they became friends. Case wrote and edited a number of Gospel song books in his life. 6 works. 1858 - 1948 Composer of "HUNT" in The Church School Hymnal for Youth Pseudonym: A. B. Ponsonby. Born: Sep­tem­ber 9, 1858, Bos­ton, Mass­a­chu­setts. Died: Ap­ril 7, 1948, Malden, Mass­a­chu­setts. Grace re­mained sin­gle all her life. Her mid­dle name was her mo­ther’s maid­en name. She served as mu­sic­al ed­it­or for the Kin­der­gar­ten Review for at least six years, star­ting in 1908. Her works in­clude: Songs for Lit­tle Peo­ple, with Fran­ces Weld Dan­i­el­son (Bos­ton, Mass­a­chu­setts: The Pil­grim Press, 1905) Worship and Song, with Ben­ja­min S. Henry Coward

1849 - 1944 Person Name: H. Coward, 1849-1944 Composer of "ENTREATY" in The Methodist Hymn-Book with Tunes Sir Henry (Harry) Coward DM United Kingdom 1849-1944. Born at Liverpool, England, the son of a pub owner and entertainer, he served an apprenticeship at Sheffield as a pen blade maker. He first learned music when a lodger at his home taught him the flute. Though uneducated, he became a teacher at Greaseborough School, and later a head teacher, earning his degrees at Oxford (DM in 1894). He married Mary Eliza Coward, and they had eight children. He conducted the Huddersfield choral society for 30 years and is credited with reviving the tonic-sol-fa method used with singers from the mills and factories who cound not read music. He conducted Whit Sunday sings in Sheffield, including a choir performance for Queen Victoria of 60,000 children. He was chorus master of the Sheffield Music Festival and conducted societies in Leeds, Huddersfield, Newcastle and Glasgow. He toured worldwide with the Sheffield Choir. He also taught music at Sheffield Training College and lectured at the University of Sheffield. He became a Freeman of Sheffield in 1920 and was knighted by King George V in 1927 for his services to music. He was President of the Tonic-Sol-fa College in London for 15 years. He also traveled the world (34,000 miles) with his famous choir (200 people), giving 134 concerts in six countries in 1911. The trip was financed by philanthropist, Dr. Charles Hariss, who joined the choir as assistant conductor. Coward remained conductor of the choir for 57 years, considered one of the best ever. He also wrote a work: “Choral technique and interpretation”, 1914. Late in life, after the dealth of Eliza, he married Louisa Hannah Coward. John Perry

Chas. H. Gabriel

1856 - 1932 Author of "The Stranger at the Door" in Crowning Day No. 2 Pseudonyms: C. D. Emerson, Charlotte G. Homer, S. B. Jackson, A. W. Lawrence, Jennie Ree ============= For the first seventeen years of his life Charles Hutchinson Gabriel (b. Wilton, IA, 1856; d. Los Angeles, CA, 1932) lived on an Iowa farm, where friends and neighbors often gathered to sing. Gabriel accompanied them on the family reed organ he had taught himself to play. At the age of sixteen he began teaching singing in schools (following in his father's footsteps) and soon was acclaimed as a fine teacher and composer. He moved to California in 1887 and served as Sunday school music director at the Grace Methodist Church in San Francisco. After moving to Chicago in 1892, Gabriel edited numerous collections of anthems, cantatas, and a large number of songbooks for the Homer Rodeheaver, Hope, and E. O. Excell publishing companies. He composed hundreds of tunes and texts, at times using pseudonyms such as Charlotte G. Homer. The total number of his compositions is estimated at about seven thousand. 1859 - 1948 Composer of "[Behold a Stranger at the door!]" in Songs of Zion Horace Neely Lincoln, 1859-1948. Horace was the son of James Lin­coln and Em­a­line King, and hus­band of Et­ta Lee Thur­mand (mar­ried 1887). He moved with his fa­mi­ly to Tex­as when he was se­ven years old. At age 10, he be­gan at­tend­ing a sing­ing school con­duct­ed by James M. Jol­ley of Mis­sis­sip­pi. In 1880, he taught his first sing­ing class in his old neigh­bor­hood school house. Lat­er that year, he at­tend­ed his first nor­mal mu­sic school, taught at Moun­tain Home (now Hol­land), Tex­as. Lincoln had oth­er mu­sic­al train­ing under L. B. Shook (a for­mer stu­dent of Phil­ip Bliss) and John Mc­Pher­son of Il­li­nois. In 1898, he grad­u­at­ed from the Chi­ca­go Na­tion­al Col­lege of Mu­sic, and in 1906 took a post-grad­ua­te course un­der Ho­ra­tio Pal­mer. William Henry Adams

1864 - 1932 Person Name: W. H. Adams Composer of "[Behold! a stranger's at the door]" in Precious Hymns No. 2 Adams, William Henry. (Ullastone, England, July 3, 1864-January 25, 1932, Aurora, Ontario.). Methodist/United Church. After graduating from Richmond (England) Theological College, he came in 1886 as a missionary to Newfoundland, serving at Burgeo, Topsail, and St. John's West. In 1891 he transferred to Ontario, where he was pastor at Haliburton (1891-1893), St. Ola (1893-1895), Dalrymple (1895-1897), Ivanhow (1897-1899), Orono (1899-1901), Claremont (1901-1903), Tamworth (1903-1905), Norwood (1905-1909), Penetanguishene (1909-1912), Downsview (1914-1918), Don Mills (1918-1920), Thornton (1920-1925), and Beeton (1925-1928). While he contributed much verse to magazines, only his hymn "for a pioneer service" spoke directly to those generations of Canadians who had not themselves endured the hardships of early settlement, but still felt respect and gratitude toward those who had.
