H. R. Trickett

1839 - 1909 Hymnal Number: 263 Author of "In the Desert of Sorrow and Sin" in Songs Of The Church Henry Robert Tricket (sometimes called Harry Robert Tricket), born December 1839, Nottinghamshire, England; died April 1909, Keokuk, Iowa. A hymn writer, minister, and pastor/preacher/teacher from the American Restoration Movement. He spent the bulk of his time in ministry serving churches in the Disciples of Christ, one of the three branches of a movement founded by Thomas Campbell, Alexander Campbell, Barton W. Stone, and Walter Scott. The other branches include Churches of Christ and Independent Christian Churches. Most of his compositions, largely as a lyric and text writer, are found in the mid-20th century hymnals of Churches of Christ. His partnership in composing with Fred Fillmore and others through the Fillmore Brothers Publishing House allowed his hymns to be sung in primarily Restoration Movement Churches, especially prior to 1940. Trickett emigrated to America at age 12. He went back to England as a young man to complete his education, and studied for a career in law, but soon decided for the minis-ry. After returning to America, he bought a farm in Montebello Township, Hancock County, Illinois, which was home for the rest of his life. He became a Disciples of Christ minister, and held pastorates in Illinois, Iowa, and Missouri, and did much evangelistic work, particularly in the Midwest. D. J. Bulls

Brantley C. George

1886 - 1963 Person Name: B. C. G. Hymnal Number: 182 Author of "Hide Me, Rock of Ages" in Songs Of The Church Born: August 12, 1886, Georgia. Died: December 26, 1963. Buried: George Cemetery, Early County, Georgia. Brantley was a farmer and gospel song writer of the Primitive Baptist faith. His most well known is "Hide Me, Rock of Ages" (© 1946), recorded originally by The Stamps Quartet, then later by well known groups such as The Chuck Wagon Gang, The Statesmen, and the Gatlin Brothers. It has even been translated and sang in Navaho. The orginal composition was written on a brown paper bag with pencil. I have held it in my hands. Not being an educated man, he supposedly sold the rights to it for the measly sum of $25. Though "Hide Me Rock Of Ages" is the most well known, he also wrote "I'm Going Home Some Morning", "Sailing on Life's Restless Ocean" and "Beyond The Blue." His parents were Levi Brantley George and Susie Mann. Levi died when Brantley was just an infant. He was raised by his paternal grandparents, William Riley George and Louisa T. Holly George. Susie remarried to Samuel Houston and had 7 other children. He was called "Big Daddy" by his grandchildren and great grandchildren. St. Bernard of Clairvaux

1090 - 1153 Person Name: Bernard of Clairvaux Hymnal Number: 323 Author of "Jesus, the Very Thought of Thee" in Songs Of The Church Bernard of Clairvaux, saint, abbot, and doctor, fills one of the most conspicuous positions in the history of the middle ages. His father, Tecelin, or Tesselin, a knight of great bravery, was the friend and vassal of the Duke of Burgundy. Bernard was born at his father's castle on the eminence of Les Fontaines, near Dijon, in Burgundy, in 1091. He was educated at Chatillon, where he was distinguished for his studious and meditative habits. The world, it would be thought, would have had overpowering attractions for a youth who, like Bernard, had all the advantages that high birth, great personal beauty, graceful manners, and irresistible influence could give, but, strengthened in the resolve by night visions of his mother (who had died in 1105), he chose a life of asceticism, and became a monk. In company with an uncle and two of his brothers, who had been won over by his entreaties, he entered the monastery of Citeaux, the first Cistercian foundation, in 1113. Two years later he was sent forth, at the head of twelve monks, from the rapidly increasing and overcrowded abbey, to found a daughter institution, which in spite of difficulties and privations which would have daunted less determined men, they succeeded in doing, in the Valley of Wormwood, about four miles from the Abbey of La Ferté—itself an earlier swarm from the same parent hive—on the Aube. On the death of Pope Honorius II., in 1130, the Sacred College was rent by factions, one of which elected Gregory of St. Angelo, who took the title of Innocent II., while another elected Peter Leonis, under that of Anacletua II. Innocent fled to France, and the question as to whom the allegiance of the King, Louie VI., and the French bishops was due was left by them for Bernard to decide. At a council held at Etampes, Bernard gave judgment in favour of Innocent. Throwing himself into the question with all the ardour of a vehement partisan, he won over both Henry I., the English king, and Lothair, the German emperor, to support the same cause, and then, in 1133, accompanied Innocent II., who was supported by Lothair and his army, to Italy and to Rome. When Lothair withdrew, Innocent retired to Pisa, and Bernard for awhile to his abbey of Clairvaux. It was not until after the death of Anacletus, the antipope, in January, 1138, and the resignation of his successor, the cardinal-priest Gregory, Victor II., that Innocent II., who had returned to Rome with Bernard, was universally acknowledged Pope, a result to which no one had so greatly contributed as the Abbot of Clairvaux. The influence of the latter now became paramount in the Church, as was proved at the Lateran Council of 1139, the largest council ever collected together, where the decrees in every line displayed the work of his master-hand. After having devoted four years to the service of the Pope, Bernard, early in 1135, returned to Clairvaux. In 1137 he was again at Rome, impetuous and determined as ever, denouncing the election of a Cluniac instead of a Clairvaux monk to the see of Langres in France, and in high controversy in consequence with Peter, the gentle Abbot of Cluny, and the Archbishop of Lyons. The question was settled by the deposition by the Pope of the Cluniac and the elevation of a Clairvaux monk (Godfrey, a kinsman of St. Bernard) into his place. In 1143, Bernard raised an almost similar question as to the election of St. William to the see of York, which was settled much after the same fashion, the deposition, after a time, if only for a time, of William, and the intrusion of another Clairvaux monk, Henry Murdac, or Murduch, into the archiepiccopal see. Meantime between these two dates—in 1140—the condemnation of Peter Abilaid and his tenets, in which matter Bernard appeared personally as prosecutor, took place at a council held at Sens. Abelard, condemned at Sens, appealed to Rome, and, resting awhile on his way thither, at Cluny, where Peter still presided as Abbot, died there in 1142. St. Bernard was next called upon to exercise his unrivalled powers of persuasion in a very different cause. Controversy over, he preached a crusade. The summer of 1146 was spent by him in traversing France to rouse the people to engage in the second crusade; the autumn with a like object in Germany. In both countries the effect of his appearance and eloquence was marvellous, almost miraculous. The population seemed to rise en masse, and take up the cross. In 1147 the expedition started, a vast horde, of which probably not a tenth ever reached Palestine. It proved a complete failure, and a miserable remnant shared the flight of their leaders, the Emperor Conrad, and Louis, King of France, and returned home, defeated and disgraced. The blame was thrown upon Bernard, and his apology for his part in the matter is extant. He was not, however, for long to bear up against reproach; he died in the 63rd year of his age, in 1153, weary of the world and glad to be at rest. With the works of St. Bernard, the best ed. of which was pub. by Mabillon at Paris in the early part of the 18th cent. (1719), we are not concerned here, except as regards his contributions, few and far between as they are, to the stores of Latin hymnology. There has been so much doubt thrown upon the authorship of the hymns which usually go by his name,—notably by his editor, Mabillon himself,—that it is impossible to claim any of them as having been certainly written by him; but Archbishop Trench, than whom we have no greater modern authority on such a point, is satisfied that the attribution of them all, except the "Cur mundus militat," to St. Bernard is correct. "If he did not write," the Archbishop says, "it is not easy to guess who could have written them; and indeed they bear profoundly the stamp of his mind, being only inferior in beauty to his prose." The hymns by which St. Bernard is best known as a writer of sacred poetry are: (1.) "Jesu duicis memoria," a long poem on the " Name of Jesus"—known as the "Jubilus of St. Bernard," and among mediaeval writers as the " Rosy Hymn." It is, perhaps, the best specimen of what Neale describes as the "subjective loveliness " of its author's compositions. (2.) "Salve mundi Salutore," an address to the various limbs of Christ on the cross. It consists of 350 lines, 50 lines being addressed to each. (3.) "Laetabundus, exultet fidelis chorus: Alleluia." This sequence was in use all over Europe. (4.) "Cum sit omnis homo foenum." (5.) " Ut jucundas cervus undas." A poem of 68 lines, and well known, is claimed for St. Bernard by Hommey in his Supplementum Patrum, Paris, 1686, p. 165, but on what Archbishop Trench, who quotes it at length, (Sac. Lat. Poetry, p. 242,) deems " grounds entirely insufficient." (6.) " Eheu, Eheu, mundi vita," or " Heu, Heu, mala mundi vita." A poem of nearly 400 lines, is sometimes claimed for St. Bernard, but according to Trench, “on no authority whatever." (7.) “O miranda vanitas." This is included in Mabillon's ed. of St. Bernard's Works. It is also attributed to him by Rambach, vol. i. p. 279. Many other hymns and sequences are attributed to St. Bernard. Trench speaks of a " general ascription to him of any poems of merit belonging to that period whereof the authorship was uncertain." Luther B. Bridgers

1884 - 1948 Person Name: L. B. B. Hymnal Number: 163 Author of "He Keeps Me Singing" in Songs Of The Church Luther Burgess Bridgers Born at Margarettsville, NC, son of a minister who conducted revival meetings, he assisted his father conducting meetings (1904-1913). He attended Asbury College at Wilmore, KY, and met his wife, Sarah Jane (Sallie) Veatch in 1905 while there. They had three sons: Luther Hughes, Allen Veatch, and James Marvin. He pastored Methodist Episcopal congregations in KY, NC, and GA, first pastoring in Perry, FL, before doing evangelistic work. He evangelized in the southern U S. He was also known for his fine singing voice and would sing at each meeting. Tragedy struck while he was conducting a revival in Middlesboro, KY, in 1911. Having left his wife and three sons to visit his wife’s parents while he was away, he learned that they had all perished in a house fire. In 1914 he remarried to Aline Winburn, and they had a son, Luther B Jr. After WW1 he took part in missionary outreaches to Belgium, Czechoslovakia, Poland and Russia. He often spoke to large crowds and saw many come to Christ. In 1914 he was also named ‘General Evangelist’ of his denomination. In 1921 Asbury College awarded him an honorary DD degree for his evangelistic efforts. He pastored at several Methodist churches in the Atlanta, GA, area, then briefly at a Methodist church at Morehead, NC. After his long ministry, ending in 1945, he retired and moved to Gainesville, GA, where he eventually died. He was known as ‘Melody Man’. He penned a number of hymns, eight of which were published in Charlie Tillman’s ‘The Revival No. 6’. His most famous, noted below, borrowed a tune from a popular song of the time, ‘Melody of Love’. William Hammond

1719 - 1783 Person Name: Wm. Hammond Hymnal Number: 33 Author of "Awake, and Sing the Song" in Songs Of The Church Hammond, William, B.A, born at Battle, Sussex, Jan. 6, 1719, and educated at St. John's College, Cambridge. In 1743 he joined the Calvinistic Methodists; and in 1745, the Moravian Brethren. He died in London, Aug. 19, 1783, and was buried in the Moravian burial-ground, Sloane Street, Chelsea. He left an Autobiography in Greek, which remains unpublished. His original hymns, together with his translations from the Latin, were published in his:— Psalms, Hymns, and Spiritual Songs. To which is prefix'd A Preface, giving some Account of a Weak Faith, and a Full Assurance of Faith; and briefly stating the Doctrine of Sanctification; and shewing a Christian's Completeness, Perfection, and Happiness in Christ. By William Hammond, A.B., late of St. John's College, Cambridge. London: Printed by W. Strahan; and sold by J. Oswald, at the Rose and Crown in the Poultry, mdccxlv. A few of his original hymns from scriptural fidelity and earnestness have attained to a foremost position amongst English hymns. These include, "Awake, and sing the song," and "Lord, we come before Thee now." His translations of Latin hymns were amongst the earliest published after those contained in the Primers and other devotional works of 16th and 17th centuries. They are of merit, and worthy of attention. Greater use might also be made of his original compositions. In addition to those named above, the following are also in common use:— 1. Brightness of the Father's Face. God the Son. 2. How great the Christian's portion is. Possession of All in Christ. 3. If Jesus is yours. God's unchangeable Love. 4. In Thine own appointed way. Will W. Slater

1885 - 1959 Person Name: W. W. S. Hymnal Number: 172 Arranger of "He Whispers Sweet Peace to Me" in Songs Of The Church William (Will) Washington Slater (1885 – 1959) is one of only a handful of Restoration/Stone-Campbell Movement hymn writers, editors, and publishers to have widespread success beyond the confines of the denomination he claimed as his own. His founding and association with the Eureka Publishing company, the Stamps-Baxter Company, the Firm Foundation Publishing House, and his own successful company, the Slater Company, yielded the sale of hundreds of thousands of song books and hymnals and helped to propagate many a hymnal that would come later with hymns and gospel songs from his pen. William Washington Slater was born February 2, 1885, in Logan County, near Ozark Arkansas. He was the son of William David and Melvina Elizabeth (Williams) Slater. He had six brothers and four sisters. The boys were John, Thomas, Dewey, Sanford, Charlie and Graden. The sisters were Lucy, Effie, Edna and Bonnie. When William was five years old, his family moved to Indian Territory (Oklahoma) settling near Sallisaw on a farm. His education was only to the 4th or 5th grade, but he did spend much time in studying and reading. He was baptized into Christ in 1901. He soon became interested in the study of music. He went to singing schools when he could. About 1903, on Saturdays, when other young men went to town to spend the day, William would put the saddle on an old mule and ride some 15 miles to study music and take voice lessons to become a better song leader. In 1906, he became associated with S. J. Oslin, of Stigler, Oklahoma, in teaching music and to study harmony. After that, he taught many singing schools in some 20 States. He began to study the Bible more every day and told his mother that he would like to be a preacher. His mother told him he would have to work hard and study the Bible every day but if he wanted to, he could make a good preacher. He did that. On June 5, 1910, he married Miss Nettie Washington. To this union, five children were born, four girls and one boy. Their oldest daughter, Pauline, died in 1914. The other three girls, Thelma Banowsky, Loraine Scott, and Ruth Scott live in Fort Worth, Texas. The son, J. Nelson Slater, lives in Dallas, Texas. Will Slater became associated with such great Restoration Movement preachers including E. M. Borden, Joe H. Blue, Rue Porter, J. Will Henley, J. B. Nelson, J. D. Tant, and a host of others. Slater sang in many gospel meetings with these men and he wrote many wonderful songs. While in a meeting with J. Will Henley at Atwood, Oklahoma, in 1912, one evening Henley preached a sermon on the home of the soul. Will took notes on the sermon and after service went to his room and before going to bed, he wrote the words for the song, "There's a Home for the Soul." The next day, he wrote the music for this song. One night in the meeting he got some others to help him to sing the song. When Henley got up to preach, with trembling voice and tears running down his cheeks, he said no man could receive a greater compliment than to have a song of that type written after one of his sermons. He said, "Brother Will, you may live long and write many great songs, but you will never write a greater song than this one. May the song live long and many thousands learn to sing and learn the great lesson therein. Thank you, brother Will, for this great song." "Brother Will" did live long and wrote many great songs. Later, he wrote the song, "Walking Alone at Eve." "Some say this was his best song, but I think 'Home of the Soul' is best," remarked Charlie Slater. In 1913, Will began to make a few talks in the country schoolhouse, trying to preach. About that same time, he went to Coal Hill, Arkansas, and did preach part time for the church there. In 1914, he came back to Oklahoma. The Slaters' first baby girl died and was buried near Sallisaw in Buffington Cemetery. In 1915, he went to Pourn, Oklahoma, near Muskogee, to do his first local work. Late in 1916, he went to Muskogee to do local work for the church there. While there, in 1917, his father passed from this life. Will moved to Fort Smith, Arkansas, in 1918, then to Beaumont, Texas, and then to Irving, Texas. He held many gospel meetings in 20 States. In August, 1959, he was at Crystal Springs, Arkansas, doing what he loved best-preaching and singing. On the evening of August 22, he had preached. After the sermon, as he often did, he asked the people to stay and sing a few songs. He was asked to sing the song, "This is Someone's Last Day." He talked some about this song title, exhorted the audience to note the truthfulness of it, not realizing it was his last day. After the service, he was preparing for bed in the home of one of the brethren when he became ill. He told the folks he needed a doctor.
