How Condescending and How Kind

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 192 hymnals Lyrics: 1. How condescending and how kind Was God’s eternal Son! Our misery reached His heav’nly mind, And pity brought Him down. 2. When Justice, by our sins provoked, Drew forth its dreadful sword, He gave His soul up to the stroke Without a murm’ring word. 3. He sank beneath our heavy woes, To raise us to His throne; There’s ne’er a gift His hand bestows But cost His heart a groan. 4. This was compassion like a God, That when the Savior knew The price of pardon was His blood, His pity ne’er withdrew. 5. Now, though He reigns exalted high, His love is still as great; Well He remembers Calvary, Nor let His saints forget. 6. Here we behold His bowels roll, As kind as when He died; And see the sorrows of His soul Bleed through His wounded side. 7. Here we receive repeated seals Of Jesus’ dying love: Hard is the wretch that never feels One soft affection move. 8. Here let our hearts begin to melt, While we His death record, And with our joy for pardoned guilt, Mourn that we pierced the Lord. Used With Tune: HOLY CROSS Text Sources: Hymns and Sacred Songs, Book III, 1709, number 4

Not All the Outward Forms on Earth

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 154 hymnals Lyrics: 1. Not all the outward forms on earth, Nor rites that God has giv’n, Nor will of man, nor blood, nor birth, Can raise a soul to Heav’n. 2. The sovereign will of God alone Creates us heirs of grace; Born in the image of His Son, A new, peculiar race. 3. The Spirit, like some heav’nly wind, Blows on the sons of flesh, New-models all the carnal mind, And forms the man afresh. 4. Our quickened souls awake and rise From the long sleep of death; On heav’nly things we fix our eyes, And praise employs our breath. O for a closer walk with God

Author: William Cowper, 1731-1800 Appears in 1,373 hymnals Lyrics: 1 O for a closer walk with God, A calm and heavenly frame; A light, to shine upon the road That leads me to the Lamb! 2 Where is the blessedness I knew When first I saw the Lord? Where is that soul-refreshing view Of Jesus and His Word? 3 What peaceful hours I then enjoyed, How sweet their memory still! But now I find an aching void, The world can never fill. 4 Return, O holy Dove, return, Sweet messenger of rest! I hate the sins that made Thee mourn, That drove Thee from my breast. 5 The dearest idol I have known, Whate'er that idol be, Help me to tear it from Thy throne, And worship only Thee. 6 So shall my walk be close with God, Calm and serene my frame; So purer light shall mark the road That leads me to the Lamb. O Thou Whose Feet Have Climbed

Author: Louis F. Benson Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 46 hymnals First Line: O Thou whose feet have climbed life's hill Lyrics: 1 O Thou whose feet have climbed life's hill, And trod the path of youth, Our Savior and our Brother still, Now lead us into truth. 2 The call is Thine: be Thou the Way, And Thine the minds that guide; Let wisdom broaden with the day, Let human faith abide. 3 Who learns of Thee the truth shall find, Who follows, gain the goal; With reverence crown the earnest mind, And speak within the soul. 4 Awake the purpose high which strives, And, falling, stands again; Confirm the will of eager lives To quit themselves like men: 5 Thy life the bond of fellowship, Thy love the law that rules, Thy name, proclaimed by every lip, The Master of our schools. Amen. Scripture: Luke 2:40 Used With Tune: HOLY CROSS

Majestic sweetness sits enthroned

Author: Samuel Stennett Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 903 hymnals Lyrics: 1 Majestic sweetness sits enthroned Upon the Saviour's brow; His head with radiant glories crowned, His lips with grace overflow. 2 No mortal can with Him compare, Among the sons of men; Fairer is He than all the fair Who fill the heavenly train. 3 He saw me plunged in deep distress, And flew to my relief; For me He bore the shameful cross, And carried all my grief. 4 To Him I owe my life and breath, And all the joys I have; He makes me triumph over death, And saves me from the grave. 5 To heaven, the place of His abode, He brings my weary feet, Shows me the glories of my God, And makes my joys complete. Amen. Topics: Christ Coronation of; Christ Majesty of; Christ Praise to; Praise To Christ Used With Tune: HOLY CROSS
