Ireland Scripture: Galatians 6:1-2 Composer of "LOVE UNKNOWN" in Voices Together John Ireland (1879-1962) studied at Durham University in England and became a church organist, choirmaster, editor, and lecturer, eventually teaching at the Royal College of Church Music. He was a gifted composer of music for voice, piano, organ, chamber music, and orchestra that were recognized for their excellence during his lifetime; LOVE UNKNOWN was his only hymn tune, found today in numerous hymnals.

b. 1944 Scripture: Galatians 6:14 Composer of "LUCILE" in Voices Together David Ashley White (b. 1944) is a seventh-generation Texan, born in San Antonio, and he both studied and taught in Texas throughout his career. He majored in oboe at Del Mar College, Corpus Christi, in composition for his Masters in Music at the University of Houston, and received a DMA from the University of Texas at Austin. Since 1977 he has been on the faculty of the Moores School of Music at the University of Houston, teaching theory and composition. White is a widely published composer of many types of compositions and has received many commissions. Selah Publishing Co. published three collections of his hymns.

Buried: English Cemetery, Florence, Italy.
Ferretti, Salvatore (b. 1817, d. 1874), lived for a time in England, where he edited a journal entitled, L'Eco di Savonarola, and in 1850 published Inni e Salmi ad uso dei Cristiani d' Italia (Lond., Partridge and Oakey). He afterwards returned to Florence, where he established a Protestant orphanage. Six of his hymns are in common use.

1929 - 2021 Person Name: Carl F. Schalk, 1929-2021 Scripture: Galatians 6:14 Composer of "FORTUNATUS NEW" in Christian Worship Carl F. Schalk (b. Des Plaines, IL, 1929; d. 2021) is professor of music emeritus at Concordia University, River Forest, Illinois, where he taught church music since 1965. He completed graduate work at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, and at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, Missouri. From 1952 to 1956 he taught and directed music at Zion Lutheran Church in Wausau, Wisconsin, and from 1958 to 1965 served as director of music for the International Lutheran Hour. Honored as a Fellow of the Hymn Society in the United States and Canada in 1992, Schalk was editor of the Church Music journal (1966-1980), a member of the committee that prepared the Lutheran Book of Worship (1978), and a widely published composer of church music. Included in his publications are The Roots of Hymnody in The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod (1965), Key Words in Church Music (1978), and Luther on Music: Paradigms of Praise (1988). His numerous hymn tunes and carols are collected in the Carl Schalk Hymnary (1989) and its 1991 Supplement.
