1845 - 1934 Person Name: D. Batchellor Hymnal Number: 484 Composer of "[Father, we thank Thee for the night]" in Hymns of Grace Daniel Batchellor United Kingdom 1845-1934. Born in London and educated in Brighton, he was a Quaker who wrote children's songs and musical instruction books. He emigrated to America in 1877, arriving in Boston. He worked at the New England Conservatory and the Oratory at Boston University. He promoted the Tonic Sol-Fa singing method, but the movement failed to establish itself. In 1920, a widower, he lived with his daughter, Marion, and her family in Baltimore, and later in Washington, D.C. He died in Philadelphia. John Perry

1827 - 1886 Person Name: Mrs. C. S. Smith Hymnal Number: 354 Author of "Tarry With Me" in Hymns of Grace Smith, Caroline Louisa, née Sprague, was born at Salem, Massachusetts, and married to the Rev. Charles Smith, pastor of the South Congregational Church, Andover. Mrs. Smith is the author of:— Tarry with me, O my Saviour. An Old Man's Prayer. Mrs. Smith's account of this hymn is "About the year 1853 [in the summer of 1852], I heard the Rev. Dr. H. M. Dexter preach a sermon on 'The Adaptedness of Religion to the Wants of the Aged.' I went home and embodied the thought in the hymn 'Tarry with me, 0 my Saviour!' I sent it to Mr. Hallock, for The Messenger. He returned it as 'not adapted to the readers of the paper.' Years after I sent it, without any signature, to the little Andover paper .... I send it to you in its original form, in a little paper of which my sister, Mrs. Terry [Rochester, N.Y.], is editoress." (Hatfield's Poets of the Church, N.Y., 1884, p. 564.) Hatfield gives the full text in 1 stanza of 6 lines. In the Plymouth Collection, 1855, No. 1337, in 5 stanzas of 4 lines, was compiled from st. i., ii., vi., vii. 1850 - 1927 Person Name: J. M. W. Hymnal Number: 158 Author of "Was It For Me?" in Hymns of Grace John M. (Marchant) Whyte. Evangelist, hymn writer, singer, b Paris, Canada West (Ontario), 8 Jun 1850, d Toronto 17 Mar 1927. He studied at the University of Toronto and devoted himself to evangelistic and temperance work. Typical of several hundred songs for which he wrote the words or the music, or both, are 'Canada Shall Yet Be Free,' 'Toronto the Good,' and 'Song of Trust.' Many songs appeared in separate editions published by Toronto News Co or Briggs. With his brother David Albert Whyte he edited Sing Out the Glad News (Briggs 1885) and Songs of Calvary (Briggs 1889). The Great Redemption (Briggs 1894), Nuggets of Gold (Briggs 1898) and Battle Songs of the Cross (1901) contain many of his own melodies. Eight of his hymns are reprinted in CMH vol 5. The editor of the reprint, John Beckwith, has concluded that 'Come Away to Jesus Now' and 'Jesus Is Calling You Now' may have enjoyed a measure of popularity. Died: March 12, 1939, Little Rock, Arkansas. Buried: Roselawn Cemetery, Little Rock, Arkansas. Will was the son of Charles Crump Ramsey and Martha Ann Frances Burns. He married twice, to Virgie Celemma Statton and Willie Mannasas Lawing. Ramsey moved with his family to northwest Arkansas as a child. He studied music in Normal schools under Ephraim Hildebrand, Stephen Oslin, and Benjamin Unseld. He began teaching shape notes and singing while still a teenager, and became well known in singing schools throughout the American South. Buried: Warsaw, Indiana. Songwriter and composr Blanche (Kerr) Brock attended the Indianapolis Conservatory of Music and the American Conservatory of Music, in Chicago, Illinois. In 1914 she married her husband Virgil Brock. Together they wrote over five hundred songs. One of the most famous songs they wrote was "Beyond The Sunset" others included "He's a Wonderful Savior to Me", "Sing and Smile and Pray", "Resting in His Love", and "Let God Have His Way". --www.findagrave.com/
