Francis Albert Rollo Russell

1849 - 1914 Person Name: Francis A. Rollo Russell Hymnal Number: 335 Author of "Christian, rise, and act thy creed" in The New Baptist Praise Book Russell, Francis Albert Rollo, third son of John, first Earl Russell, was born July 10, 1849, and educated at Christ Church, Oxford; B.A. 1873, M.A. 1878. He is a Fellow of the Royal Meteorological Society. His hymns appeared in his Break of Day, London, 1893, from which three passed into Horder's Hymns Supplem., 1894, viz.:— 1. Christian! rise, and act thy creed. Christian Service. 2. Come, Holy Spirit, kind to all. Whitsuntide. 3. O God, Whose voice the angels hear. The Eternal. Brotherton Hymnal Number: 474 Author of "Consider the lilies" in The New Baptist Praise Book Brotherton, Alice, née Williams, born at Cambridge, Ind., and married in 1876 to William E. Brotherton of Cincinnati. Has published Beyond the Veil, Chicago, 1886, and Sailing of King Olaf, 1887. 1846 - 1926 Hymnal Number: 227 Composer of "ERIPE ME" in The New Baptist Praise Book Thomas Hastings Henry Crossley, Born: August 8, 1846, Glenburn (near Lisburn), County Antrim, Ireland. Died: March 3, 1926. Educated at the Royal School of Dungannon, Crossley was a professor of Greek at Bristol University, England, and at Belfast University, Ireland. William Bruce

1812 - 1882 Person Name: Rev. William Bruce Hymnal Number: 161 Author of "Holy Father, Thou hast giv'n" in The New Baptist Praise Book Bruce, William, D.D., eldest son of the Rev. William Bruce, United Secession minister at South Shields (who after 1818, conducted the Ardoch Academy, Cardross, Dumbartonshire), was born at South Shields, April 7, 1812. He studied at the University of Glasgow, which, in 1868, conferred on him the degree of D.D., and became, in 1838, minister of Infirmary Street U. P. Church, Edinburgh (then Cowgate). He was Moderator of Synod in 1869. In 1870 he was appointed a member of the Hymnal Committee of the U. P. Church, and contributed 2 hymns to their Presbyterian Hymnal, 1876. These he included, with 9 others, in his Hebrew Odes and other Poems , 1874 (Edinb.: D. S. Stewart). He also published, in 1878, Memories: a Tale; and other Poems. He died at Bridge of Allan, Nov. 15, 1882. The two hymns contributed to the Presbyterian Hymnal are:— 1. Holy Father, Thou hast given. Holy Scripture. 2. The seed we bury in the earth. Resurrection.
