1720 - 1793 Person Name: Wingrove Hymnal Number: 195 Author of "Hail, thou ever blessed Jesus" in Sacred lyrics, or Select hymns Wingrove, John. A few hymns by this writer are in J. Middleton's Hymns, 1793. D. Sedgwick dates his pieces 1785. One of these still in common use is, "Hail! my ever blessed Jesus." b. 1720; d. 1793.

Person Name: Tatlock Hymnal Number: 59 Author of "Far from the fold, O God my feet" in Sacred lyrics, or Select hymns Tatlock, Eleanor, of Sandwich. Two vols. of her Poems were published in 1811, and her hymn "Far from Thy fold, O God, my feet" (Reconciliation) is given in Hatfield's Church Hymns, N. Y. 1872. It appeared in the Evangelical Magazine, 1798, p. 307.

1803 - 1849 Person Name: Davis Hymnal Number: 99 Author of "From ev'ry earthly pleasure" in Sacred lyrics, or Select hymns Davis, Eliel, was born at Folkestone, June 5, 1803. In 1822 he entered a business establishment in London, and joined the Baptist church in Eagle Street. Entering the Baptist Ministry he was successively pastor at Newport, Isle of Wight; Regent Street, Lambeth, London; Eye, in Suffolk; and St. Ives, in Huntingdonshire. He died in March, 1849. His hymn "From every earthly pleasure" (Onward) was contributed to ms. monthly magazine, in 1821, edited by Dr. Belcher, author of Historical Sketches of Hymns, and through Dr. Belcher's influence was published in The New Baptist Magazine, March, 1825, in 6 stanzas of 4 lines. It is found, usually abridged, in several modern collections. Another of his hymns "There is a heaven of perfect peace" (Heaven Anticipated), appeared in the Supplement to the Evangelical Magazine, 18(5, and is also in common use. [Rev. W. R. Stevenson, M.A.]

Person Name: Allen Hymnal Number: 36 Author of "Sinners, will you scorn the message" in Sacred lyrics, or Select hymns Allen, Jonathan. Concerning this hymn-writer, to whom is credited the hymn, "Sinners, will you scorn the message?" we can only say that this hymn appeared in Hymns adapted to Public Worship, collected from various Authors, Exeter, S. Woolmer, 1801, edited by Richard Pearsell Allen, Minister of Castle Street Meeting, Exeter; and that in D. Sedgwick's marked copy of John Dobell's New Selection, &c., 1806, it is attributed to Jonathan Allen. What authority Sedgwick had for this ascription we cannot determine. It is through him that it has gained currency. Allen's hymn, "Sinners, will you scorn, &c," is sometimes given with stanzas i. and ii. transposed, as "Hear the heralds of the Gospel," as in the American Baptist Praise Book, N. Y. 1871. Judith Madan
1702 - 1781 Person Name: Madan Hymnal Number: 95 Author of "In this world of sin and sorrow" in Sacred lyrics, or Select hymns Madan, Judith, née Cowper, was the only daughter of the Hon. Spencer Cowper, the wife of Colonel Martin Madan (d. 1736), and the mother of Martin Madan, and of Dr. Spencer Madan, sometime Bishop of Peterborough. She had some repute as a writer of verse. Her Burial Hymn, "In this world of sin and sorrow," appeared in the 1763 Appendix to her son's Psalms & Hymns in 2 stanzas of 8 lines. It has been repeated in several collections in Great Britain and America, and is. given without alteration in Lyra Britannica 1867, p. 659. We have failed to ascertain the date of Mm. Madan's birth or death.
