Heinrich von Laufenberg

1390 - 1460 Person Name: Heinrich of Laufenberg, 15th cent. Scripture: Galatians 3:29 Author of "Lord Jesus Christ, Our Lord Most Dear" in Trinity Hymnal (Rev. ed.) Heinrich of Laufenburg was a native of Laufenburg, Aargau, Switzerland, The earliest notice of him is that in 1434 he was decan of the Collegiate Church of St. Maurice at Zofingen in Aargau. He afterwards held a similar post at Freiburg, in Baden; but in 1445 became a monk in the monastery of the Knights of St. John at Strassburg ("Zum grunen Werde"). He was living there in 1458, but probably died in that year or soon after (Koch, i. 213-214; Allgemine Deutsche Biographie, xix. 810-813, &c). He was the most important and most prolific hymn-writer of the 15th century, and a number of his productions are of sweetness and abiding worth. Most of them are in honour of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Many are in intricate metres, while others are written to song tunes, or are recasts of songs, or translations from the Latin. A large number are included by Wackernagel in his second volume, principally taken from a paper manuscript of the 15th century, which he found in the town library at Strassburg. Two of the best of his original hymns are:— i. Ach lieber Herre Jesu Christ. Cradle Hymn. This beautiful prayer of a mother for her infant child is given by Wackernagel, ii. p. 534, in 5 stanza of 6 lines, from the Strassburg MS., where it is entitled "Benedictio puerily." In his Kleines Gesang-Buch, 1860, Wackernagel gives it as No. 114 (omitting stanza ii.) with the original melody, dating both 1429. The text is also in Hoffmann von Fallersleben, edition 1861, No. 125. Translated as:— Ah ! Jesu Christ, my Lord most dear. A full and very good translation by Miss Winkworth in her ChristianSingers, &c, 1869, p. 93. The address to the B. V. M. in stanza ii., "Maria, müter Jesu Christ, Sit du dins Kints gewaltig bist," is translated as:— “Since in Thy heavenly kingdom, Lord, All things obey Thy lightest word." Her translation was adopted with alterations by the Rev. H. White in the Savoy Hymnary (Chapel Royal, Savoy), 1870, No. 35, beginning, "Lord Jesu Christ, our Lord most dear." Instead of taking the very good original melody, Mr. White altered the hymn to 6-8 metre, and omitted stanzas iv., v. This form has been repeated in the S. P. C. K. Church Hymns, 1871; Mrs. Brock's Children's Hymn Book, 1881, and others. ii. Ich wollt dass ich daheime war. Eternal Life. A beautiful hymn of spiritual Home¬sickness. Wackernagel, ii. p. 540, includes a version in 13 stanzas of 2 lines from the Strassburg MS.; and another in 9 stanzas of 2 lines from a 15th century MS. at Berlin. Hoffmann von Fallersleben, 1861, gives the Strassburg text as No. 54; and a form in 9 stanzas from a MS. at Inzkofen, near Sigmaringen, dating 1470-1480, as No. 55. In his Kleines Gesang-Buch,1860, Wackernagel gives as No. 74 a slightly altered form of the Strassburg text, along with the original melody. Kenneth Lorne Cober

1902 - 1993 Person Name: Kenneth L. Cober, 1902- Scripture: Galatians 3:16-20 Author of "Renew Your Church" in Worship and Rejoice Born: July 12, 1902, Dayton, Ohio. The son of missionaries, Cober grew up in Puerto Rico. He attended Bucknell University and Colgate Rochester Divinity School, and was pastor of the First Baptist Church, Canandaigua, New York; and the Lafayette Avenue Baptist Church, Buffalo, New York. He served the American Baptist state conventions in New York, Rhode Island and Connecticut, and was executive director of the Division of Christian Education for the American Baptist Convention (1953-70). Joseph Barnby

1838 - 1896 Person Name: Sir Joseph Barnby Scripture: Galatians 3:29 Composer of "ST. CHRYSOSTOM" in Trinity Hymnal (Rev. ed.) Joseph Barnby (b. York, England, 1838; d. London, England, 1896) An accomplished and popular choral director in England, Barby showed his musical genius early: he was an organist and choirmaster at the age of twelve. He became organist at St. Andrews, Wells Street, London, where he developed an outstanding choral program (at times nicknamed "the Sunday Opera"). Barnby introduced annual performances of J. S. Bach's St. John Passion in St. Anne's, Soho, and directed the first performance in an English church of the St. Matthew Passion. He was also active in regional music festivals, conducted the Royal Choral Society, and composed and edited music (mainly for Novello and Company). In 1892 he was knighted by Queen Victoria. His compositions include many anthems and service music for the Anglican liturgy, as well as 246 hymn tunes (published posthumously in 1897). He edited four hymnals, including The Hymnary (1872) and The Congregational Sunday School Hymnal (1891), and coedited The Cathedral Psalter (1873). Bert Polman

Richard K. Avery

1934 - 2020 Person Name: Richard Kinsey Avery (b. 1934) Scripture: Galatians 3:28 Author of "I am the church! You are the church!" in Church Hymnary (4th ed.) Rv Richard Kinsey Avery USA 1934-2020Born in the Central Valley of CA, he attended schools at Exeter, CA, where his family was active in the First Presbyterian Church. He decided to become a Christian minister at age 14 while at a Presbyterian youth conference. He attended Redlands U, Redlands, CA. He then attended Union Theological Seminary, NYC. He participated in the University Choir and associated with Christian friends there. He became pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Port Jervis, NY, (FPCPJ) for 40 years. Musically inclined, he composed a variety of songs (both lyrics and music), mostly with his close friend, Rv Donald S Marsh. Avery was commentator, preacher, and song leader for the duo, while Marsh conducted drama events and conducted three choirs. Together, they wrote over 150 published hymns, carols, and anthems. In 1967 the two founded Proclamation Productions, with sales later handled by Hope Publishing Company. With Marsh, he led conference and church assemblies in new forms of worship in all 50 states from the late 1960s into the early 2000s. These events included 30 years of summer seminars at Ghost Ranch in Abiquiu, NM. At Port Jervis, NY, Avery founded a community center for poor people called the ‘Hope Center’. He was also a member of and chairman of the board of directors of Mercy Community Hospital. His church, FPCPJ, was a prominent center for creative forms of worship, music, and drama, providing many concerts and theatrical events for the community. He was also involved with Westminster Presbyterian Church in Santa Fe, where he served as music leader after retirement from the NY church. In 2003 he founded a small magazine, ‘Santa Fe Theologians’, serving as editor, and later, as manager of Santa Fe Theologians Institutes, which held public forums on contemporary issues. He was also a member of the World Affairs Forum, the Council on International Relations, the Santa Fe Symposium, and the Coro de Camara chorale ensemble. Donald S. Marsh

1923 - 2010 Person Name: Donald Stuart March (b. 1923) Scripture: Galatians 3:28 Author of "I am the church! You are the church!" in Church Hymnary (4th ed.) Donald Stuart Marsh USA 1923-2010. Born at Akron, OH, he spent his early years in Singapore and Sumatra, Indonesia, where his father was an accountant for rubber plantations. He attended Western Maryland College, Westminster, MD (now McDaniel College). He then attended the U of Houston, TX, and received Masters degrees in music, art, and drama. For 17 years he was involved with theatre, concert, and TV work in NYC as actor, choreographer, teacher, and pianist. For three decades he served at the First Presbyterian Church of Port Jervis (FPCPJ), along with pastor, Richard K Avery, his friend and partner for 50 years. As an ordained elder, he directed 75+ plays and musicals, and conducted three choirs. With pastor Avery, the two wrote and published 150+ songs. They formed Proclamation Productions to publish their works. Later, Hope Publishing handled their sales. Don spent his retirement years at Santa Fe, NM, with his friend, Avery. He died at Santa Fe, never having married. His record is staggering. He directed two full productions each year; created the church’s High Tea concerts; and for years, wrote a new musical to be performed at the annual Thanksgiving weekend Holiday Fair. All this in addition to directing the choirs for Sunday services. He was head of the ‘Presby Players’ there, and is believed to be the longest-running director of a church arts group in America. Proclamation Publications collections of works include: ‘Hymns Hot and Carols Cool’ (1967); ‘More, More, More’ (1970); ‘Songs For the Search’ (1970; ‘Alive and Singing’ (1971); ‘Songs For Easter People’ (1972); three volumes of ‘Hymns and Carols’ (1974-1979); and ‘Songs For Special Occasions’ (1980). Emily R. Brink

b. 1940 Person Name: Emily Brink Scripture: Galatians 3:27 Adapter of "Todos los que han sido bautizados (All Who Have Been Baptized)" in Global Songs for Worship Emily R. Brink is a Senior Research Fellow of the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship and Adjunct Professor of Church Music and Worship at Calvin Theological Seminary, Grand Rapids, Michigan. Her main areas of responsibility are conference planning and global resources. She is program manager of the annual Calvin Symposium on Worship, which draws more than 70 presenters and 1600 participants from around the world. She also travels widely to lecture and to learn about worship in different parts of the world, especially in Asia, where she has lectured in Bangladesh, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, and Taiwan. Her areas of interest include congregational song from all times and places; psalmody; hymnal editing. She was editor of four hymnals and consults with a wide range of churches on worship renewal issues.
