Onward, Christian soldiers

Meter: 6.5.6.5 D Appears in 1,848 hymnals Topics: Offices of the Church Catechism Lyrics: 1 Onward, Christian soldiers, Marching as to war, With the Cross of Jesus Going on before. Christ the Royal Master Leads against the foe, Forward into battle, See, His banners go. Onward, Christian soldiers, Marching as to war, With the Cross of Jesus Going on before. 2 At the sign of triumph Satan's host doth flee; On, then, Christian soldiers, On to victory. Hell's foundations quiver At the shout of praise; Brothers, lift your voices, Loud your anthems raise. Onward, Christian soldiers, Marching as to war, With the Cross of Jesus Going on before. 3 Like a mighty army Moves the Church of God; Brothers, we are treading Where the saints have trod; We are not divided, All one body we, One in hope, and doctrine, One in charity. Onward, Christian soldiers, Marching as to war, With the Cross of Jesus Going on before. 4 Crowns and thrones may perish, Kingdoms rise and wane, But the Church of Jesus Constant will remain; Gates of hell can never 'Gainst that Church prevail; We have Christ's own promise, And that cannot fail. Onward, Christian soldiers, Marching as to war, With the Cross of Jesus Going on before. 5 Onward, then, ye people, Join our happy throng, Blend with ours your voices In the triumph-song; Glory, laud, and honour, Unto Christ the King, This through countless ages Men and Angels sing. Onward, Christian soldiers, Marching as to war, With the Cross of Jesus Going on before.

Lord, as to Thy dear cross we flee

Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 246 hymnals Topics: Offices of the Church Visitation of the Sick Lyrics: 1 Lord, as to Thy dear cross we flee, And plead to be forgiven, So let Thy life our pattern be, And form our souls for heaven. 2 Help us, through good report and ill, Our daily cross to bear; Like Thee, to do our Father's will; Our brethren's grief to share. 3 Let grace our selfishness expel, Our earthliness refine; And kindness in our bosoms dwell, As free and true as Thine. 4 If joy shall at Thy bidding fly, And grief's dark day come on, We, in our turn, would meekly cry, "Father, Thy will be done." 5 Kept peaceful in the midst of strife, Forgiving and forgiven O may we lead the pilgrim's life, And follow Thee to heaven.
