How sweet the name of Jesus sounds

Author: J. Newton (1725-1807) Appears in 1,669 hymnals Topics: Advent 4 The Annunciation; Christ the Friend of Sinners; Christ the Healer; God, Saviour Praised and Worshipped; Lent 2, The King and the Kingdom Conflict; Palm Sunday The Way of the Cross; Pentecost 2 The People of God; Pentecost 3 The Church's Confidence in Christ; The Ascension of Christ Lyrics: 1 How sweet the name of Jesus sounds in a believer's ear! it soothes our sorrows, heals our wounds, and drives away our fear. 2 It makes the wounded spirit whole, and calms the troubled breast; it satisfies the hungry soul, and gives the weary rest. 3 Dear name, the rock on which I build, my shield and hiding-place; my never-failing treasury, filled with boundless stores of grace! 4 Jesus, my shepherd, guardian, friend, my prophet, priest and king, my Lord, my life, my way, my end — accept the praise I bring. 5 Weak is the effort of my heart, and cold my warmest thought; but when I see you as you are, I'll praise you as I ought. 6 Till then I would your love proclaim with every fleeting breath; and may the music of your name refresh my soul in death. Come, You Thankful People, Come

Author: Henry Alford Meter: 7.7.7.7 D Appears in 738 hymnals Topics: Advent 3 Year C Lyrics: 1 Come, you thankful people, come, raise the song of harvest-home! All is safely gathered in, safe before the storms begin; God, our maker, does provide for our needs to be supplied: come to God's own temple, come, raise the song of harvest-home! 2 All the world is God's own field, harvests for God's praise to yield; wheat and weeds together sown, here for joy or sorrow grown; first the blade, and then the ear, then the full corn shall appear: Harvest-giver, grant that we wholesome grain and pure may be. 3 For our God, one day, shall come, and shall take this harvest home, from the field shall in that day all offences purge away; giving angels charge at last in the fire the weeds to cast, but the fruitful ears to store in the garner evermore. 4 Even so, God, quickly come to your final harvest-home! Gather all your people in, free from sorrow, free from sin; there for ever purified, in your presence to abide: come, with all your angels, come, raise the glorious harvest-home. Scripture: Matthew 13:24-30 Used With Tune: ST GEORGE'S, WINDSOR

Dear Lord and Father of mankind

Author: John Greenleaf Whittier, 1807-1892 Meter: 8.6.8.8.6 Appears in 525 hymnals Topics: Gradual Hymn; Lent; Temptation, Penitence and Forgiveness; The Wholeness of Creation; Year A Epiphany 3; Year A Proper 14; Year B Proper 3; Year B Third Sunday Before Advent; Year C Proper 1; Year C Proper 8 Lyrics: 1 Dear Lord and Father of mankind, forgive our foolish ways! Re-clothe us in our rightful mind, in purer lives thy service find, in deeper rev'rence praise, in deeper rev'rence praise. 2 In simple trust like theirs who heard beside the Syrian sea, the gracious calling of the Lord, let us, like them, without a word rise up and follow thee, rise up and follow thee. 3 O Sabbath rest by Galilee! O calm of hills above, where Jesus knelt to share with thee the silence of eternity, interpreted by love! Interpreted by love! 4 Drop thy still dews of quietness, till all our strivings cease; take from our souls the strain and stress, and let our ordered lives confess the beauty of thy peace, the beauty of thy peace. 5 Breathe through the heats of our desire thy coolness and thy balm; let sense be dumb, let flesh retire; speak through the earthquake, wind and fire, O still small voice of calm! O still small voice of calm! Scripture: 1 Kings 19:9-18 Used With Tune: REPTON

I cannot tell

Author: William Young Fullerton, 1857-1932 Meter: 11.10.11.10.11.10.11.12 Appears in 34 hymnals Topics: Year B Advent 3 First Line: I cannot tell how he whom angels worship Lyrics: 1 I cannot tell how he whom angels worship should stoop to love the peoples of the earth, or why as shepherd he should seek the wand'rer with his mysterious promise of new birth. But this I know, that he was born of Mary when Bethl'em's manger was his only home, and that he lived at Nazareth and laboured, and so the Saviour, Saviour of the world, is come. 2 I cannot tell how silently he suffered, as with his peace he graced this place of tears, or how his heart upon the cross was broken, the crown of pain to three and thirty years. But this I know, he heals the broken-hearted, and stays our sin, and calms our lurking fear, and lifts the burden from the heavy laden, for still the Saviour, Saviour of the world is here. 3 I cannot tell how he will win the nations, how he will claim his earthly heritage, how satisfy the needs and aspirations of east and west, of sinner and of sage. But this I know, all flesh shall see his glory, and he shall reap the harvest he has sown, and some glad day his sun will shine in splendour when he the Saviour, Saviour of the world, is known. 4 I cannot tell how all the lands shall worship, when, at his bidding, ev'ry storm is stilled, or who can say how great the jubilation when ev'ry heart with perfect love is filled. But this I know, the skies will thrill with rapture, and myriad, myriad human voices sing, and earth to heav'n and heav'n to earth, will answer: 'At last the Saviour, Saviour of the world, is King!' Scripture: Isaiah 40:5 Used With Tune: LONDONDERRY AIR

2 Kast kun Anker, her er Grund! Korset er in Overgang, Glæden bliver evig lang.

Lov ske dig, vor Fader i Himmelens Rige!
