E. J. Hopkins

1818 - 1901 Person Name: E. J. Hopkins, Mus. Doc. Topics: Preparation for Christ Composer of "[O'er the distant mountains breaking]" in The Hymnal, Revised and Enlarged, as adopted by the General Convention of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the United States of America in the year of our Lord 1892 Dr Edward John Hopkins MusDoc United Kingdom 1818-1901. Born at Westminster, England, the son of a clarinetist with the Royal Opera House orchestra, he became an organist (as did two of his brothers) and a composer. In 1826 he became a chorister of the Chapel Royal and sang at the coronation of King William IV in Westminster Abbey. He also sang in the choir of St. Paul’s Cathedral, a double schedule requiring skill and dexterity. On Sunday evenings he would play the outgoing voluntary at St. Martin’s in-the-field. He left Chapel Royal in 1834 and started studying organ construction at two organ factories. He took an appointment at Mitcham Church as organist at age 16, winning an audition against other organists. Four years later he became organist at the Church of St. Peter, Islington. In 1841 he became organist at St. Luke’s, Berwick St., Soho. Two Years later he was organist at Temple Church, which had a historic organ (built in 1683). He held this position for 55 years. In 1845 he married Sarah Lovett, and they had four sons and five daughters. He was closely associated with the Bach Society and was organist for the first English performances of Bach’s St. Matthew Passion. In 1855 he collaborated with Edward Rimbault publishing “The organ, its history and construction” (3 editions 1855-70-77). In 1864 he was one of the founders of the “College of organists”. In 1882 he received an honorary Doctorate of Music from the Archbishop of Canterbury. He composed 30+ hymn tunes and some psalm chants, used by the Church of England. He died in London, England. Emma Leslie Toke

Nicholas Toke, Rector of Godington, Ashford, Kent. --Annotations of the Hymnal, Charles Hutchins, M.A. 1872. =========================== Toke, Emma, nèe Leslie, daughter of John Leslie, D.D., Bishop of Kilmore, was born at Holywood, Belfast, Aug. 9, 1812; married to the Rev. Nicholas Toke, Godington Park, Ashford, Kent, in 1837; and died in 1878. Mrs. Toke's early hymns were written in 1851, "at the request of a friend who was collecting for the Committee of the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge", and they appeared in the S. P. C. K. Hymns for Public Worship, 1852, as follows:— 1. Glory to Thee, 0 Lord. 2. Lord, of Thy mercy, hear our cry. National Thanksgiving. 3. 0 Lord, in all our trials here. Saints' Days, General. 4. 0 Lord, Thou knowest all the snares. Lent. 5. 0 Thou, to Whose all seeing eye. Annunciation. 6. 0 Thou, Who didst with love untold. St. Thomas. 7. Thou art gone up on high. Ascension. The most popular of these hymns are, "Glory to Thee, O Lord"; "O Lord, Thou knowest all the snares"; and "Thou art gone up on high." These hymns as a whole are simple and pleasing. They seldom rise into passionate fervour, and are weakened in several instances by faulty construction. They have been widely adopted in Great Britain and America. Another series of hymns by Mrs. Toke was contributed to the Sunday School Liturgy . . . and Hymn Book, arranged by the Rev. B. Judd, B.A., Incumbent of St. Mary's, Halifax. Halifax, F. King, 1870. These hymns have failed to attract attention, although in literary merit they fall little short of her earlier efforts. They are:— 8. Jesu! by Whose Almighty Grace. St. Andrew. 9. Lord God, the strength and stay of all. General. 10. Lord of all power and might. General. 11. Lord of light and life. St. Mark. 12. O Father, Whom in truth to know. In 1995 he designed and led a hymn festival in the Washington National Cathedral for the American Choral Directors Association national convention and in 1998 did the same at the national convention of the American Guild of Organists in Denver. He has presented such events abroad as well as in Asia (July, 1996 in Seoul, Korea) and Europe (August, 1997) in the National Cathedral of Norway, Nidaros Dom, Trondheim, as a part of the celebration of the millennium of the birth of St. Olaf. Although he is a Lutheran, his festivals are ecumenical experiences drawing upon the greatest treasures of Christian song from many centuries, traditions, and styles. Ferguson is the Elliot and Klara Stockdal Johnson Professor of Organ and Church Music and Cantor to the Student Congregation at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota. St. Olaf’s great choral tradition began with F. Meluis Christiansen and has influenced many generations of fine church musicians. Christiansen’s lifelong interest in hymns is evidenced by the many hymns included in his choral compositions as well as his contributions to hymnals of his day. Ferguson’s creative hymn arrangements continue this tradition with a renewed emphasis upon congregational participation. A native of Cleveland, Ferguson’s degrees are from Oberlin College, Kent State University and the Eastman School of Music. He is respected as a fine teacher and performer and his unique skill as improviser and leader of congregational song has won national acclaim. R. S. Ambrose

1824 - 1908 Person Name: Robert Steele Ambrose, 1824-1908 Topics: Christ Presence of; Death Preparation for; Death and Resurrection; Heaven Composer of "AMBROSE" in Hymnal and Liturgies of the Moravian Church Robert Steele Ambrose United Kingdom 1824-1908, Ambrose grew up in Chelmsford, attending the parish church of St. Mary the Virgin, where his father was organist. He received early musical training from his father and probably sang in the church choir. His family emigrated to upper Canada in 1837 and purchased land near Guelph, intending to farm it. But lacking training and experience, he found it too much of a challenge. He moved to Hamilton, Ontario, in 1845 to become an organist of Christ's Church, leaving Robert to run the farm. That same year, Robert became the organist at St. George's Church in Guelph and gave piano lessons to several local pupils. He wrote to his father complaining that he did not like farming, as plowing was too rough on his hands and interfered with his musical efforts. He moved to Kingston in 1847 and joined his brother teaching music. His brother, Charles, left there,and Robert took over his students. He took on pianoforte tuning, organist for St. George's Church and a choirmaster position to make ends meet. In 1863 Robert moved to Hamilton as organist and choir director of Church of the Ascension and stayed there 20 years. The following year he became music director for Wesleyan Female College. He stayed there 25 years, teaching hundreds of students over the years. He was also a prolific composer, having 100+ musical works (anthems and instrumentals). He served various Anglican parishes in England from 1939 to 1945 as well as from 1967 to 1980. Seddon was a missionary in Morocco from 1945 to 1955 and the home secretary for the Bible Churchmen's Missionary Society from 1955 to 1967. Many of his thirty hymns are based on missionary themes; he wrote some in Arabic while he lived in Morocco.
