John J. Overholt

1918 - 2000 Scripture: Luke 22:44 Arranger of "MY SAVIOUR ONCE FOR ALL" in The Christian Hymnary. Bks. 1-4 John J. Overholt was born to an Amish family of limited means in the state of Ohio in 1918. As a child he was soon introduced to his father's personal collection of gospel songs and hymns, which was to have a marked influence on his later life. With his twin brother Joe, he early was exposed to the Amish-Mennonite tradition hymn-singing and praising worship. An early career in Christian service led to a two-year period of relief work in the country of Poland following World War II. During that interim he began to gather many European songs and hymns as a personal hobby, not realizing that these selections would become invaluable to The Christian Hymnary which was begun in 1960 and completed twelve years later in 1972, with a compilation of 1000 songs, hymns and chorales. (The largest Menn. hymnal). A second hymnal was begun simultaneously in the German language entitled Erweckungs Lieder Nr.1 which was brought to completion in 1986. This hymnal has a total of 200 selections with a small addendum of English hymns. Mr. Overholt married in 1965 to an accomplished soprano Vera Marie Sommers, who was not to be outdone by her husband's creativity and compiled a hymnal of 156 selections entitled Be Glad and Sing, directed to children and youth and first printed in 1986. During this later career of hymn publishing, Mr. Overholt also found time for Gospel team work throughout Europe. At this writing he is preparing for a 5th consecutive tour which he arranges and guides. The countries visited will be Belgium, Switzerland, France, Germany, Poland, USSR and Romania. Mr. Overholt was called to the Christian ministry in 1957 and resides at Sarasota, Florida where he is co-minister of a Beachy Amish-Mennonite Church. John H. Maunder

1858 - 1920 Person Name: John Henry Maunder, 1858-1920 Scripture: Luke 22:40-46 Composer of "THY WILL BE DONE" in Complete Anglican Hymns Old and New John Henry Maunder United Kingdom 1858-1920. Born at Chelsea, England,,the son of a carpenter, he attended the Royal Academy of Music. He began his career as a theatre composer, but later specialized in sacred music for the Anglican Church. He became an author and composer, as well as a musician. He was organist at St. Matthew’s, Sydenham (1876-77); St. Paul’s, Forest hill (1878-1879); and at churches in Blackheath and Sutton. He married Ellen Fanny Fulgoux Dakin, and they had a daughter, Winifred. He provided musical accompaniment for concerts in Albert Hall, and, in 1881, conducted the Civil Service Vocal Union. He wrote about 20 church anthems, 10 cantatas, several carols, tunes for around 30 hymns, 19 songs and ballads, 12 services and canticles, two operettas, and six instrumentals. His best known cantata was “Olivet to Calvary”. He was known for his good musical style and great technical facility. His compositions were full of melodic ideas and were written for ease of interpretation. He died at West Brompton, London, England. John Perry

Henry R. Bishop

1786 - 1855 Scripture: Luke 22:14-20 Composer (attributed to) of "MADRID" in Celebremos Su Gloria Bishop, Henry Rowley, was born at London, Nov. 18, 1786, and died at London, April 30, 1855. See a full notice in the Dictionary of Nat. Biog., v., 91. From 1840 he was occasional and from 1843 to 1848 sole conductor of the Antient Concerts. Of his Twelve Corales...as sung at the Concerts of Ancient Music, for which (with Words expressly written to them) they were adapted and arranged by Sir Henry R. Bishop, 1844 (B. M. copy is H. 878), some are fairly literal translations from the German, others have no connection with their nominal originals. Three were noted in this Dictionary, but their source not having been traced in 1892, we now subjoin them:— 1. Behold, how glorious is yon sky, p. 127, ii. This is from "Wie herrlich ist die neue Welt" in C. H. Graun's oratorio Der Tod Jesu, 1756 (B. M. copy, 11. 1805, catalogued as 1766), the words being by Karl Wilhelm Ramler, b. Feb. 25, 1725, at Colberg, in Pomerania; 1748, Professor of Literature at the Cadet School in Berlin; d. at Berlin, April 11, 1798. 2. God is our Refuge in distress, Our Shield, p. 325, i. 3. O let us praise the Lord, With hearts of true devotion, p. 963, ii., No. 4. The Winchester Hymn Book, 1857, alters stanza i., the original line 1. 3, 4 being:— "Whose spirit roams abroad, To calm life's troubled ocean." Another fairly close version is,"Wake, O wake! a voice is crying," from "Wachet auf," p. 805, ii. [Rev. James Mearns, M.A.] --John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology, New Supplement (1907)
