J. M. Stillman

1834 - 1917 Scripture: Psalm 17:5-8 Composer of "LORD, HEAR ME" in Bible Songs JAIRUS MAXSON STILLMAN, Mus. Doc., Professor of Music in Milton College. As a composer he has had many valuable contributions, especially to sacred music, but, while his work in that direction has been most important, his labors have been more especially directed to the educational side of the art. For the past fifteen years, with brief interruptions, he has filled his present collegiate chair, and his work prior to the acceptance of this position was most active, varied and successful. Mr. STILLMAN was born February 20, 1834, in Alfred, Allegany Co., N.Y., the third in order of birth of the six children of Maxson and Lydia (CHAPMAN) STILLMAN. His father, a tenor singer of talent, had not only for many years led the choir of the large church at Alfred of which he was a member, but had taught singing schools in many places surrounding his home. His son inherited great aptitude for music, and at the age of ten years could read plain music at sight. He accompanied his father to singing schools, and made rapid progress in the mastery of the principles of music. He attended the singing classes in Alfred Academy. He is the associate author of "Good-Will for Sabbath Schools," "The Cluster," and "Anthem Treasures," the latter two being well-known and popular anthem books. He has also composed a large number of pieces for other anthem and Gospel hymn books, and a number of songs published in sheet music form. At Chicago he acted as one of the judges, with Prof. T. Martin TOWNE and others, in selecting from 700 original pieces of music, and in critically editing those which should be published in the work called "International Lesson Hymnal No. 1," published by David C. COOK. In 1884 an excellent article on "Church Music and How to Sustain it," written by Dr. STILLMAN, appeared in the "Seventh-day Baptist Quarterly." As an undergraduate, Diana was a flute major at Northwestern University. She has been a flutist in the Minnesota Orchestra, performing under Leonard Slatkin, Stanislaw Skrowaczewski, and Jean-Pierre Rampal, to name but a few conductors. At the age of 17 Diana conducted the Minnesota Orchestra in a young people's concert as winner of the Urban Arts conducting competition. For six years Diana was conductor and musical director of the Mozart Sinfonia. She has been a conductor of choirs at Loyola University, National-Louis University, and Holy Name Cathedral in Chicago. Diana has authored several books including Handbook for Cantors (Liturgy Training Publications) and Sing God a Simple Song Volumes I and II (Treehaus Communications). She was the editor of A Sourcebook about Music and the Gather Comprehensive Hymnal, first edition (G.I.A. Publications). She was also the conductor for the choral recordings: Catholic Classics, V.I and II (G.I.A. Publications) and both flute and vocal soloist on the Taize recording "Wait for the Lord," from the same publisher. Diana was senior editor of Clavier Magazine and the editor of both Flute Talk and Flute Explorer magazines (The Instrumentalist Company). As editor of Flute Talk Diana interviewed the great flutist Sir James Galway and Jazz flutist Steve Kujala. Most recently Diana was music director for the DVD and CD series from Egghead Learning Systems: As I Grow, for children from birth to 18 months. For 11 years she was the music specialist at Baker Demonstration School in Wilmette, Illinois, and performed as a flutist in the chamber ensemble "Diletto Musicale." Beginning with the 2012-2013 school year, she is the middle school music teacher at The Frances Xavier Warde School, Holy Name Cathedral Campus in Chicago. Diana Kodner

Tom Colvin

1925 - 2000 Person Name: Tom Colvin Scripture: Psalm 17:3 Author of "Night Has Fallen " in Lift Up Your Hearts Tom Colvin (b. 1925; d. 2000) was trained as an engineer and worked in that profession in Burma and Singapore from 1945 to 1948. After studying theology at Trinity College, Glasgow University, he was ordained in the Church of Scotland in 1954. He served as missionary in Nyasaland (now Malawi) from 1954 to 1958, in Ghana from 1958 to 1964, and again in Nyasaland from 1964 to 1974. His work there included preaching, education, and community development. After completing his missionary work, Colvin became a minister in the United Reformed Church of England and served an inner-city church in London. He returned to Africa in 1984 as a development consultant to the Zimbabwe Christian Council. Colvin's writings include Christ's Work in Free Africa (1964) and three collections of hymns, many written in collaboration with African Christians–Free to Serve (1966), Leap My Soul (1976), and Fill Us with Your Love (1983).
