Walter Greatorex

Before that he served as assistant music master at Uppingham School in Rutland (1900-1910). Ira David Sankey

About 1856 he removed with his parents to New Castle, Pennsylvania, where he became a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Four years afterwards he became the Superintendent of a large Sunday School in which he commenced his career of singing sacred songs and solos. Mr. Moody met with him and heard him sing at the International Convention of the Young Men's Christian Association, at Indianapolis, and through Mr. Moody's persuasion he joined him in his work at Chicago. After some two or three years' work in Chicago, they sailed for England on June 7, 1872, and held their first meeting at York a short time afterwards, only eight persons being present. Their subsequent work in Great Britain and America is well known. Mr. Sankey's special duty was the singing of sacred songs and solos at religious gatherings, a practice which was in use in America for some time before he adopted it. His volume of Sacred Songs and Solos is a compilation from various sources, mainly American and mostly in use before. Although known as Sankey and Moody’s Songs, only one song, "Home at last, thy labour done" is by Mr. Sankey, and not one is by Mr. Moody. Mr. Sankey supplied several of the melodies. The English edition of the Sacred Songs & Solos has had an enormous sale; and the work as a whole is very popular for Home Mission services. During the past fifteen years Mr. Sankey's Sacred Songs and Solos have had a very large sale, which has justified him in increasing the number of songs and hymns, including " New Hymns and Solos," to 1200. In 1906 he published My Life and Sacred Songs (London : Morgan & Scott). In addition to the "Story of his Own Life," the work contains an account of the most popular of his solos, with interesting reminiscences of the spiritual awakening of many who were influenced through his singing of them in public. In this respect it corresponds in some measure with G. J. Stevenson's Methodist Hymn Book, &c, 1883 (p. 1094, i.). It is an addition to the Sacred Songs and Solos, which will be held in esteem by many. In addition to his hymn, noted on p. 994, ii., Mr. Sankey gives details of the following:— 1. Out of the shadow-land into the sunshine. [Heaven Anticipated.] Mr. Sankey's account of this hymn is:— "I wrote this hymn specially for the memorial service held for Mr. Moody in Carnegie Hall, where 1 also sang it as a solo. It is the last sacred song of which I wrote both the words and music. The idea was suggested by Mr. Moody's last words, 'Earth recedes; heaven opens before me . . . God is calling me, and I must go.' On account of its peculiar association with my fellow-labourer in the Gospel for so many years, the words are here given in full." The hymn follows on p. 185, in 3 stanzas of 4 lines and a chorus. 2. Rejoice! Rejoice! our King is coming, [Advent.] Mr. Sankey writes concerning this hymn:— "During one of my trips to Great Britain on the SS. City of Rome a storm raged on the sea. The wind was howling through the rigging, and waves like mountains of foam were breaking over the bow of the vessel. A great fear had fallen upon the passengers. When the storm was at its worst, we all thought we might soon go to the bottom of the sea. The conviction came to me that the Lord would be with us iu the trying hour, and sitting down in the reading room, I composed this hymn. Before reaching England the tune had formed itself in my mind, and on arriving in London I wrote it out, and had it published in Sacred Songs and Solos, where it is No. 524 in the edition. of 1888. From Mr. Sankey's autobiographical sketch we gather that he was born at Edinburgh, in Western Pennsylvania, Aug. 28, 1840, joined Mr. Moody in 1871, and visited England for the first time in 1873. The original of the Sacred Songs, &c, of 23 pieces only, was offered as a gift to the London publishers of P. Phillips's Hallowed Song, and declined by them. It was subsequently accepted by Mr. K. O. Morgan, of Morgan & Scott, and is now a volume of 1200 hymns. From a return kindly sent us by Messrs. Morgan & Scott, we find that the various issues of the Sacred Songs and Solos were:— In 1873, 24 pp.; 1874, 72 pp. ; 1876, 153 hymns; 1877, 271 hymns; 1881, 441 hymns; 1888, 750 hymns; 1903, 1200 hymns. In addition, The Christian Choir, which is generally associated with the Sacred Songs and Solos, was issued in 1884 with 75 hymns, and in 1896 with 281. Eduard Kremser

He was a choir director, conductor, composer and musicologist. He was the arranger of the music for male voices in Sechs altniederländische Volkslieder, a collection of six Dutch folk songs from Adriaan Valerius' collection Nederlandtsche gedenck-clanck. From this collection comes the tune which is named after him and is sung with the English text "We Gather Together." He also edited and arranged a 3 volume set of German and Austrian folk music: Wiener Lieder und Tänze: im Auftrage der Gemeindevertretimg der Stadt Wien (published 1912-1925) as well as other volumes of folk music. John Morison

He studied at the University of Aberdeen (King's College), where he graduated M.A. in 1771. In 1780 he became parish minister of Canisbay, Caithness. He received the degree of D.D. from the University of Edinburgh in 1792. He died at Canisbay, June 12, 1798. He was one of the members added on May 26, 1781, to the Committee appointed by the General Assembly of 1775 to revise the Translations and Paraphrases of 1745. To him are ascribed Nos. 19, 21, 29, 30 and 35, in the 1781 collection, and he is said to have been joint author with John Logan of Nos. 27 and 28. [Rev. Robert Seagrave

1693 - 1759 Person Name: Rev. Robert Seagrave Topics: Christ Second Coming, His Author of "Rise, my soul, and stretch thy wings" in The Hymnal Robert Seagrave was born at Twyford, Leicestershire, in 1693. He studied at Clare Hall, Cambridge, graduating in 1718. In 1739, he was appointed Sunday Evening Lecturer at Lorimer's Hall, London. He afterwards preached in the Tabernacle, in connection with the Calvinistic Methodists. The date of his death is unknown. He published some treatises on doctrinal subjects, and on the duties of the ministry. In 1742, he published "Hymns for Christian Worship." His hymns have been published by Sedgwick (1860). --Annotations of the Hymnal, Charles Hutchins, M.A., 1872. ==================================== Seagrave, Robert, M.A., son of Robert Seagrave, Vicar of Twyford, Leicestershire, was born at Twyford, Nov. 22, 1693, and educated at Clare College, Cambridge, where he graduated in 1714. Taking Holy Orders he entered most earnestly into the movement then being carried forward by the Wesleys and Whitefield; and between 1731 and 1746 he issued numerous letters and pamphlets, &c, designed to awaken in the clergy a deeper earnestness in their work. In 1739 he was appointed Sunday Evening Lecturer at Loriners' Hall, London, where he continued to preach till 1750. He also occupied Whitefield's Tabernacle from time to time. His hymns, which were better known and more highly appreciated by the older compilers than those in modern days, and will still repay perusal, were included in his collection, published by him for use at the Loriner's Hall, as Hymns for Christian Worship, partly composed, and partly collected from Various Authors, 1742. The 4th edition was published in 1748, and the originals were reprinted by D. Sedgwick as Seagrave's Hymns, in 1860. Two of these hymns are still in common use:— 1. Now may the Spirit's holy fire. Opening of a Place of Worship. This, from Hymns for Christian Worship, &c, 1742, was given by G. Whitefield as the opening hymn of his Hymns for Social Worship, &c, 1753. It was repeated in Toplady's Psalms & Hymns, 1776; and again in later collections to modern hymnbooks. 2. Rise, my soul, and stretch thy wings. Pilgrim's Song. Also from his Hymns, &c, 1742, into G. Edwin Barnes

1864 - 1930 Topics: His Second Coming Composer of "[In the glad time of the harvest]" in Gospel Melodies and Evangelistic Hymns Edwin Barnes was born on March 15, 1864 in Shirley, Southampton, England. In 1881, Barnes moved to Battle Creek, Michigan, to attend Battle Creek College and play the organ at the Seventh-day Adventist church there. He eventually served as head of the Battle Creek College music department for almost 20 years. He also formed an amateur music club, helped found an annual spring music festival in Battle Creek, ran the Battle Creek Conservatory of Music (until 1926), and was organist and choir director at the First Congregational Church in Battle Creek. Jeremy Taylor

1613 - 1667 Person Name: Bishop Jeremy Taylor (1613-1667) Topics: Christ Second Coming, His Author of "Draw nigh to Thy Jerusalem, O Lord" in The Hymnal Taylor, Jeremy, D.D. This poet of preachers was born of very humble parentage on both sides, at Cambridge, in August, 1613. His father was a barber. He must have had a good school as a boy. He entered Cams College, of his native city, as a "sizar" in 1626. His career at the university was a brilliant one. He was made fellow of All Souls College, Oxford, in 1632; and rector of Uppingham, Rutlandshire, in 1638, as is still proudly remembered there. He was inevitably "sequestered" by Parliament in 1642. Inexorable necessities of circumstance put him in prison. During the opening of the great Protectorate he kept a school in Wales along with William Nicholson, and acted as chaplain to the Earl of Carberry at Golden Grove, Carmarthenshire, one of the pilgrim spots of our country, because of this and of his imperishable book named after it. In 1658 he is found in Ireland. He preached at Lisburn and Portmore. He returned to London early in 1660, and signed the loyalist or royalist Declaration of the Nobility and Gentry, on April 24th, thirty-five days before the "Restoration." He was not overlooked, as so many faithful royalists were. He was consecrated bishop of Down and Connor in January, 1661; made a member of the Irish Privy Council in February; entrusted with the diocese of Dromore in March: and in the same year was chosen Vice-chancellor of the University of Dublin. He died at Lisburn, August 13th, 1667, and was interred in the choir of the cathedral of Dromore. Bishop Taylor's complete works have been repeatedly edited, e.g. by Henry Rogers, Pitman, Bishop Heber, Eden; and manifold Selections and single books, as his Holy Living and Holy Dying. Notwithstanding his rich and im¬perial intellect, and enthralling eloquence, and absolute command of words, Bishop Taylor holds only a very small place in the Antiphon of England. It has been admirably said by Dr. Rowland Williams, "Poetry differs from eloquence, as love differs from friendship" (Stray Thoughts, 1878). His attempts at verse are eloquence, not poetry, and even the eloquence hampered and shallowed. The present writer collected his entire poems and verse-translations in the Miscellanies of the Fuller Worthies' Library (1870). In the "Introduction" the reader will find a critical ac¬count of the various hymns; and also therein an account is furnished of a flagrant misap¬propriation of Bishop Taylor's Hymns by Samuel Speed in his Prison Piety, or Meditations divine and moral. Digested into poetical heads on mixt and various subjects (1677). The following is the original title page of the volume in which all the Festival Hymns, save one, first appeared:—> The Golden Grove, or a Manuall of Daily Prayers and Letanies Fitted to the dayes of the Week. Containing a short Summary of what is to be Believed, Practised, Denied. Also Festival Hymns According to the manner of "The Ancient Church." Composed for the Use of the Devout, especially of Younger Persons; By the Author of "The Great Exemplar." London: Printed by J. F. for R. Rayston, at the Angel in Ivie Lane, 1655. (12 mo.) A 2nd edition appeared in 1657 with the Author's name thusBy Jer. Taylor, D.D., Chaplain in Ordinary to his late Majesty—a courageous announcement in the circumstances. A 3rd edition seems to have disappeared. The 4th ed. appeared in 1659; and from it is derived the second Christmas Hymn, “Awake, my soul," which was not in either the 1st or 2nd ed. Heber, Pitman, and Eden overlooked this hymn. [Rev. A. B. Grosart, D.D., LL.D.] From Bishop Taylor's Golden Grove, 1655, the following hymns are in common use:-- 1. Full of mercy, full of love. Prayer for Charity. From the Golden Grove, p. 116, where it is given in 20 lines, and headed, "A Prayer for Charity." It was given in Bishop Heber's posthumousHymns, &c, 1827, p. 109, and thus came into later hymnbooks. 2. Lord, come away, why dost Thou stay. Advent. 3. Lord, let Thy flames of holy charity. Whitsunday. This begins with line 12 of his hymn in the Golden Grove, "On the Feast of Pentecost, or Whitsunday," p. 157.
