Nancy Byrd Turner

1880 - 1971 Person Name: Nancy Byrd Turner, 1880-19817 Author (alt. text) of "Moved by the Gospel, Let Us Move" in Singing Our Faith Turner, Nancy Byrd. Born in Boydton, Virginia, July 29, 1880, daughter of Byrd Thornton Turner and Nancy Addison (Harrison) Turner. Composed her first verse at three. First published verse at age of 8--a romantic ballad, "Ruth in the Dentist's Chair" (he fell in love). Her father was an Episcopal minister; they lived in about a dozen small towns or rural communities during her childhood. In 1916, she went to Boston and joined the staff of Youth's Companion. She wrote under many pen names, and published in several magazines. A. Royce Eckhardt

b. 1937 Person Name: A. Royce Eckhardt, 1937- Arranger of "KINGSFOLD" in The Covenant Hymnal Royce Eckhardt has served as a director of music, organist, conductor, composer, arranger, hymnal editor, teacher, and hymnologist for over fifty years. He has served Evangelical Covenant churches as minister of music and organist in Seattle, New Britain (CT), Winnetka, and Hinsdale, Illinois, and also the Winnetka Presbyterian Church. Mr. Eckhardt earned a Bachelor of Music degree in organ performance in 1960 from North Park College, Chicago, and a Master of Music degree in liturgical music at Hartt College of Music, University of Hartford in 1972. Royce joined the music faculty at Seattle Pacific College in 1961, teaching organ, music theory and literature courses and directing small choral ensembles. He served as adjunct professor of church music at North Park Theological Seminary in Chicago, specializing in hymnology and also serving as chapel organist. Mr. Eckhardt was a member of the Covenant Hymnal Commission that produced The Covenant Hymnal (1973). In 1990 he was appointed to the Special Hymnal Commission that compiled and published The Covenant Hymnal: A Worshipbook (1996), serving as music editor. He is represented in the hymnal with 47 arrangements, original tunes, and descants. His many hymn arrangements, harmonizations and tunes appear in eight American hymnals. Royce also served as music director of the Covenant Ministers Chorus from 1985 to 2005, leading the Chorus on a concert tour to Sweden and Germany in 1990 and on a second concert tour in 2001 to Norway, Sweden, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Germany. He has led many workshops and seminars throughout the country on worship and church music related topics, is a published composer of organ and choral works, a board member of North Shore American Guild of Organists, board member of The Bach Week Festival, and a member of The Hymn Society. H. Kenn Carmichael

1908 - 1996 Author of "Today We All Are Called to Be Disciples" in The Presbyterian Hymnal H. Kenn Carmichael was born in Martins Ferry, 1908 and graduated from Muskingum College (B.A. 1938), the University of Wisconsin (M.A. in Speech, 1930), and the University of Minnesota (Ph.D. in Theater, 1941). He was head of the theatre department at Purdue University (1931-1943). From 1943 to 1946, Carmichael served in the U.S. Navy, where he made training films. After his enlistment ended, Carmichael taught at City College, Los Angeles (1947-1954), and then joined Film Production International producing films for denominational stewardship campaigns. In 1962, Carmichael and his wife were commissioned by the Commission on Ecumenical Mission and Relations (COEMAR) of the United Presbyterian Church U.S.A. as consultants in communications to the Middle East and Africa. After ten years they returned to the United States, where Kenn became associate pastor at Central Church (1972-1979). Since 1979 the Carmichaels have lived at Westminster Gardens, Los Angeles. Carmichael was Moderator of the Synod of Southern California and Hawaii in 1987. He was also honored as a distinguished alumnus by Muskingum College. --The Presbyterian Hymnal Companion, 1993

John Quarles

1624 - 1665 Person Name: John Quarles, 1624-1665 Author of "For Zion's Sake I Will Not Rest" in The Cyber Hymnal Quarles, John, son of Francis Quarles, was born in Essex in 1624, and was educated at Exeter College, Oxford. He bore arms within the garrison at Oxford on behalf of Charles I. and subsequently (it is said) he was raised to the rank of captain in the King's service. On the downfall of the King, Quarles retired to London, and devoted himself to literature for a livelihood. He died there during the great Plague, 1665. He published several works including (1) Jeremiah's Lamentations Paraphrased, with Divine Meditations, 1648; and (2) Divine Meditations upon Several Subjects whereunto is annexed God's Love to Man’s Unworthiness, with several Divine Ejaculations. London, 1655 (Wood's Athenae Oxon.). From the Ejaculation, Mr. Darling adapted two hymns for his Hymns for the Church of England. In the 1889 ed. these are:— “O King of kings, before Whose Throne" (Holy Trinity); and "O Thou Who sitt'st in heaven and seest" (Visitation of Sick). --John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology (1907)
