A Mighty Fortress Is Our God

Author: Martin Luther Hymnal: The Hymnal and Order of Service #266 (1937) Meter: 8.7.8.7.6.6.6.6.7 Lyrics: 1 A mighty Fortress is our God, A trusty Shield and Weapon, He helps us in our ev'ry need That hath us now o'ertaken. The old malignant foe Ere means us deadly woe: Deep guile and cruel might Are his dread arms in fight, On earth is not his equal. 2 With might of ours can naught be done, Soon were our loss effected; But for us fights the Valiant One Whom God Himself elected. Ask ye who this may be? Jesus Christ, it is He, As Lord of Hosts adored, Our only King and Lord, He holds the field forever. 3 Though devils all the world should fill, All eager to devour us, We tremble not, we fear no ill, They shall not overpower us. For this world's prince may still Scowl fiercely as he will, We need not be alarmed, For he is now disarmed; One little word o'erthrows him. 4 The Word they still shall let remain, Nor any thanks have for it; He's by our side upon the plain, With His good gifts and Spirit Take they, then, what they will, Life, goods, yea, all; and still, E'en when heir worst is done, They yet have nothing won, The kingdom ours remaineth. Amen.

A mighty fortress is our God

Hymnal: Christian Hymns #270 (1898) Meter: 8.7.8.7.6.6.6.6.7 Lyrics: 1 A mighty fortress is our God, A trusty shield and weapon; Our help is He in all our need, Our stay, whate'er doth happen. The old malignant foe Doth seek to work us woe; His craft and power are great, And, armed with cruel hate, On earth is not his equal. 2 With might of ours naught can be done, Soon were our loss effected; But for us fights the Valiant One, Whom God Himself elected. Ask ye who this may be? Christ Jesus, it is He; Lord Sabaoth is His name, From age to age the same,-- He holds the field forever. 3 And were the world with devils filled, All eager to devour us, Our souls to fear should little yield, They cannot overpower us. The prince of darkness grim, We tremble not for him; His rage we can endure, For lo! his doom is sure, One little word can fell him. 4 The Word they still shall let abide, Nor thanks be due them for it; The Lord of hosts is by our side, Grants us His gifts and Spirit; And though they take our life, Goods, honor--children, wife, Yet, when their worst is done, They still have nothing won: The Kingdom ours remaineth. A mighty fortress is our God

Author: M. Luther Hymnal: The Lutheran Hymnary #270 (1913) Meter: 8.7.8.7.6.6.6.6.7 Lyrics: 1 A mighty fortress is our God, A trusty shield and weapon; Our help is He in all our need, Our stay whate'er doth happen; For still our ancient foe Doth seek to work us woe; Strong mail of craft and power He weareth in this hour; On earth is not his equal. 2 Stood we alone in our own might, Our striving would be losing; For us the one true Man doth fight, The Man of God's own choosing. Who is this chosen One? 'Tis Jesus Christ, the Son, The Lord of hosts, 'tis He Who wins the victory In every field of battle. 3 And were the world with devils filled, All watching to devour us. Our souls to fear we need not yield, They cannot overpower us; Their dreaded prince no more Can harm us as of yore; His rage we can endure; For lo! his doom is sure, A word shall overthrow him. 4 Still must they leave God's word its might, For which no thanks they merit; Still is He with us in the fight, With His good gifts and Spirit. And should they, in the strife, Take kindred, goods, and life, We freely let them go, They profit not the foe; With us remains the kingdom. A Mighty Fortress Is Our God

Author: Martin Luther; Frederick Henry Hedge Hymnal: Glory to God #275 (2013) Meter: 8.7.8.7.6.6.6.6.7 Lyrics: 1 A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing. Our helper he, amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing. For still our ancient foe doth seek to work us woe. His craft and power are great, and armed with cruel hate, on earth is not his equal. 2 Did we in our own strength confide, our striving would be losing, were not the right man on our side, the man of God's own choosing. Dost ask who that may be? Christ Jesus, it is he. Lord Sabaoth his name, from age to age the same, and he must win the battle. 3 And though this world, with devils filled, should threaten to undo us, we will not fear, for God hath willed his truth to triumph through us. The Prince of Darkness grim, we tremble not for him. His rage we can endure, for lo, his doom is sure. One little word shall fell him. 4 That word above all earthly powers, no thanks to them, abideth. The Spirit and the gifts are ours through him who with us sideth. Let goods and kindred go, this mortal life also. The body they may kill; God's truth abideth still. His kingdom is forever.
