Children Of God, Born Again Of His Spirit

Author: H. A. Brorson Meter: 11.10.11.10.11.11 Appears in 3 hymnals Topics: Faith and Justification Lyrics: 1 Children of God, born again of His Spirit, Never we cease in His name to rejoice, Jesus believing, and saved by His merit, Come we to God with a jubilant voice. Let then each voice to the Father uplifted Widely proclaim that with grace we are gifted. 2 Evil by nature, and dead in transgression, Cold as a statue, and hard as a stone, This was our state when Thou, moved by compassion, Chose in Thy wisdom to call us Thine own. Led by Thy Spirit, and called by Thy favor, Heard we the life-giving voice of our Savior. 3 When we consider the thoughts of our Father, As He elected us children by grace, Sending His Spirit with mercy to gather Us who had fallen and turned from His face, How can we help to be mode by His favor, And to acclaim Him our Father forever. 4 What can be charged to the Father's elected Whom He made just in Christ Jesus, our Lord, Here is sweet balsam for all the afflicted, Grace for the lost in His life-giving Word. Faith, passing through ev'ry fear of damnation, Found in the Savior the pledge of salvation. 5 Come, then, ye faithful, reborn of the Spirit, Know ye the mind of your Father above, Learn that He saved you alone by His merit, Taking you into His bosom of love. Children, who into His bosom do gather, Bless Him, and thank Him, acclaim Him your Father. Used With Tune: [Children of God, born again of His Spirit]

Through Jesus' bloody merit

Meter: 7.6 Appears in 13 hymnals Topics: Faith and Justification Lyrics: 1 THROUGH Jesus' blood and merit I am at peace with God; What, then, may daunt my spirit, However dark my road? My courage shall not fail me, For God is on my side; Though hell itself assail me, Its rage I may deride. 2 There's nothing that can sever Me from the love of God; No want, no pain whatever, No famine, peril, blood. Though thousand foes surround me, And in their base design A sheep for slaughter count me, The victory still is mine. 3 Through Him that loved me dearly From all eternity, I can rejoice sincerely In all this misery; For this is my persuasion, I cling to this firm faith, Of which on no occasion Shall rob me hell, nor death: 4 That neither life's temptation, Nor death's most trying hour, Nor angels of high station, Nor any other power, Nor things that now are present, Nor things that are to come, Nor height, however pleasant, Nor depth of deepest gloom; 5 Nor any creature ever Shall from the love of God Me, the poor sinner, sever; For in my Saviour's blood This love its fountain taketh; He hears my faithful prayer, And nevermore forsaketh Me, his dear child and heir.

Faith Is Wisdom From On High

Author: Emanuel Cronenwett Appears in 5 hymnals Topics: The Means of Grace Faith and Justification Lyrics: 1 Faith is wisdom from on high, Hearing ear and seeing eye; In the soul a higher light Than the ken of mortal sight: Vivid trust in hope serene, Evidence of things not seen. 2 Faith in meekness, as is meet, Sits and learns at Jesus' feet; Nestles closely to the Lord, Happy in the Master's Word; Cleaves to it, defends it then: This to faith is Yea, Amen. 3 Faith is sure where sight is blind: While lost sense may nowhere find Hope, to stay a sinking soul When the billows o'er it roll, Faith directs its saving quest To the cross, and there finds rest. 4 Faith, in childlike trust, is wise: Trusting Him who never lies; By whose grace the weak grow strong, Change their sighing into song. Praise be Thine, O Lord of might; Faith shall end in glorious sight. Used With Tune: DIX

Salvation unto Us has Come

Author: Paul Speratus Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.8.7 Appears in 20 hymnals Topics: Faith and Justification Lyrics: 1 Salvation unto us has come By God's free grace and favor; Good works cannot avert our doom, They help and save us never. Faith looks to Jesus Christ alone, Who did for all the world atone; He is our one Redeemer. 2 What God did in His Law demand And none to Him could render Caused wrath and woe on ev'ry hand For man, the vile offender. Our flesh has not those pure desires The spirit of the Law requires, And lost is our condition. 3 It was a false, misleading dream That God His Law had given That sinners could themselves redeem And by their works gain heaven. The Law is but a mirror bright To bring the inbred sin to light That lurks within our nature. 4 From sin our flesh could not abstain, Sin held its sway unceasing; The task was useless and in vain, Our guilt was e'er increasing. None can remove sin's poisoned dart Or purify our guileful heart-- So deep is our corruption. 5 Yet as the Law must be fulfilled Or we must die despairing, Christ came and has God's anger stilled, Our human nature sharing. He hath for us the Law obeyed And thus His Father's vengeance stayed Which over us impended. 6 Since Christ has full atonement made And brought to us salvation, Each Christian therefore may be glad And build on this foundation. Thy grace alone, dear Lord, I plead, Thy death is now my life indeed, For Thou have paid my ransom. 7 Let me not doubt, but trust in Thee, Thy Word cannot be broken: Thy call rings out, "Come unto Me!" No falsehood hast Thou spoken. Baptized into Thy precious name, My faith cannot be put to shame, And I shall never perish. 8 The Law reveals the guilt of sin And makes us conscience-stricken; The Gospel then doth enter in The sinful soul to quicken. Come to the cross, trust Christ, and live; The Law no peace can ever give, No comfort and no blessing. 9 Faith clings to Jesus' cross alone And rests in Him unceasing; And by its fruits true faith is known, With love and hope increasing. For faith alone doth justify; Works serve thy neighbor and supply The proof that faith is living. 10 All blessing, honor, thanks, and praise To Father, Son, and Spirit, The God who saved us by His grace-- All glory to His merit! O Triune God in heaven above, Who has revealed Thy saving love; Thy blessed name be hallowed. Amen. Scripture: Romans 3 Used With Tune: ES IST DAS HEIL Text Sources: Tr. composite

My Soul Has Found The Sure Foundation

Author: I. A. Rothe Meter: 9.8.9.8.8.8 Appears in 3 hymnals Topics: Faith and Justification Lyrics: 1 My soul has found the sure foundation That holds its anchor evermore; The wounds of Christ are my salvation, As planned by God in days of yore. Unmoved will this foundation stay When earth and heaven pass away. 2 It is that deep commiseration Which all our thinking far transcends, And which the God of all creation To every sinner now extends. His heart in pity beats for all, And He would have us heed His call. 3 God wants no human soul to perish But wishes us to live for aye. His Son, whom we as Savior cherish, Came down to earth our debt to pay; And now the Lamb for sinners slain Admission to our hearts would gain. 4 O Fount of love and mercies tender By Jesus' blood for sinners spilt, My wounded soul Thou whole dost render And free from every trace of guilt, Because the blood of Christ doth cry For mercy to Thy throne on high. 5 Thy mercies ever contemplating, My faith shall ne'er to doubt give way, And tho' in torments unabating My sins accuse me night and day, I will approach the mercy seat And find my heart with love replete. 6 Be all my ways to Him commended Whose mercy is the boundless sea. To Him, until my days are ended, My troubled heart shall ever flee, And, by His love and mercy blest, Find comfort, solace, peace and rest. 7 On this foundation e'er remaining While in this transient world I dwell, And mercy every hour obtaining, I shall not fail its praise to tell, Until, in blest eternity, Unfathomed love my song shall be. Used With Tune: [My soul has found the sure foundation]
