Thy dreadful Anger, LORD, restrain

Appears in 1 hymnal Topics: Prophecies Predictions of God's Judgment upon the Ungodly and Wicked Lyrics: 1 Thy dreadful Anger, Lord, restrain, Nor let thy Wrath on me remain, For 'tis not to be borne: Oh, spare a Wretch forlorn. Instead of Justice, which I fear, Let me the Voice of Mercy hear. Who can the Stroke withstand, Of thine afflicting Hand? 2 Have Mercy LORD! for I grow faint, Oh listen to my sad Complaint! And as thou know'st my Grief, Vouchsafe a kind Relief. The Anguish of my aking Bones, Extort from me continual Groans; And thou alone can'st cure, The Torments I endure. 3 My anxious Soul is troubled Sore, Do thou oh LORD, my Peace restore; My Heart within my Breast, Can find no solid Rest: But LORD how long must I sustain These heavy woes? how long complain? To me in Mercy turn, Nor let thine Anger burn. 4 Thy wonted Goodness, LORD, extend; To me thy kind Assistance lend, For my unequall'd Grief, Oh send some quick Relief. And for thy wond'rous Mercy's sake, On my Distress some Pity take; Vouchsafe to make me whole, And ease my trouble Soul. 5 For after Death I can no more, Thy loving Kindness, LORD, implore, No more in Anthems raise, My Voice to sing thy Praise; None in the dreary Tomb confin'd, Who hath his fleeting Breath resign'd, Can thy great Deeds proclaim, And magnify thy name. 6 With Groaning faint, and tir'd with Pain, I cease not loudly to complain; My Nights in Grief I spend, In Grief that knows no End. My Tears that never cease to flow, Are Marks of undissembled Woe; From Anguish never free, No Hope of Ease I see. 7 My Sight grows dim, my Beauty fades, Old Age my tott'ring Fram invades, My feeble Eyelids close; My soul no comfort knows, Whilst I with ever anxious Care, My angry Foes insulting hear, Who daily me annoy, And my distress enjoy. on my insulting Foes. 8 Depart, ye Wicked, far from me, Ye shall no more my Sorrows see, Nor with exulting Voice, In all my Wrongs rejoice. For GOD, I find accepts my Tears, The LORD will soon dispel my Fears, He hears when I implore And will my Strength restore. 9 The LORD at length vouchsafes to hear, My mournful Cry, and humble Pray'r; My Life he will retrieve, My Soul from Death relieve; And those who wish'd my Fall to see, Shall soon with Shame confounded be, And know, with humbled Pride, That GOD is on my Side. Scripture: Psalm 6 Used With Tune: [Thy dreadful anger Lord restrain]

LORD, let thy just Decrees the King

Appears in 5 hymnals Topics: Prophecies Of Jesus Christ, concerning his Coming and Government Lyrics: 1 LORD, let thy just Decrees the King In all his Ways direct; And let his Son, throughout his Reign, Thy righteous Laws respect. So shall he still thy People judge, With pure and upright Mind; Whilst all the helpless Poor shall him, Their just Protector find. 2 Then Hills and Mountains shall bring forth, The happy Fruits of Peace; Which all the Land shall own to be, The work of Righteousness; Whilst he the poor and needy Race. Shall rule with gentle Sway, And from their humble Necks, shall take Oppressive Yoaks away. 3 In ev'ry Heart, thy awful Fear Shall then be rooted fast, As long as Sun and Moon endure, Or Time itself shall last. He shall descend like Rain, that chears The Meadow's second Birth; Or like war Show'rs, whose gentle Drops, Refresh the thirsty Earth. 4 In his blest Days the Just and Good Shall be with Favour crown'd; The happy Land shall every where With endless Peace abound. His uncontroul'd Dominion shall From Sea to Sea extend; Begin at proud Euphrates' Stream, At Nature's Limits end. 5 To him the Savage Nations round, Shall bow their servile Heads; His vanquish'd Foes shall lick the Dust Where he his Conquest spreads. The Kings of Tarshish, and the Isles, Shall costly Presents bring; From spicy Sheba Gifts shall come, And wealthy Saba's King. 6 To him shall ev'ry King on Earth His humble Homage pay; And diff'ring Nations gladly join, To own his righteous Sway. For he shall set the needy free, When they for Succour cry; Shall save the Helpless, and the Poor, And all their Wants supply. Part II 7 His Providence, for needy Souls Shall due Supplies prepare; And over their defenceless Lives, Shall watch with tender Care. He shall preserve and keep their Souls From Fraud and Rapine free; And in his Sight, their guiltless Blood Of mighty Price shall be. 8 Therefore shall GOD his Life and Reign To many Years extend; Whilst Eastern Princes Tribute pay, And golden Presents send. For him shall constant Pray'rs be made, Thro' all his prosp'rous Days; His just Dominion shall afford A lasting Theme of Praise. 9 Of useful Grain thro' all the Land, Great Plenty shall appear; A Handful sown on Mountain Tops, A mighty Crop shall bear. Its Fruit, like Cedars shook by Winds, A rattling Noise shall yield; The City too shall thrive, and vie For Plenty, with the Field. 10 The Mem'ry of his glorious Name, Thro' endless Years shall run; His spotless Fame shall shine as bright And lasting as the Sun. In him the Nations of the Earth Shall be completely blest, And his unbounded Happiness By ev'ry Tongue confest. 11 Then bless'd be GOD, the mighty LORD, The GOD whom Israel fears; Who only wond'rous in his Works, Beyond Compare, appears. Let Earth be with His Glory fill'd; Forever bless his Name; Whilst to his Praise the list'ning World, Their glad Assent proclaim. Scripture: Psalm 72 Used With Tune: [Lord, let thy just Decrees the King]

In thee I put my steadfast trust

Appears in 1 hymnal Topics: Prophecies Prophetical Curses against the Enemies and Persecutors of the Chruch Lyrics: 1 In thee I put my stedfast Trust, LORD, let me not be put to Shame; Incline thine Ear, and save my Soul, For great and righteous is thy Name: To thee, for Help I will resort, For thou art still my Rock and Fort. 2 From cruel and ungodly Men, Protect my Soul and set me free; For thou my early Youth till now, My constant Hope hath been in thee: Thy Care did safely guard my infant Days, And brought me forth to sing thy Praise. 3 While some on me with Wonder gaze, Thy Hand unseen supports me still; Thy Honour therefore, and thy Praise, My Mouth with grateful Joy shall fill: Then cast me not, O LORD, away, Tho' Strength and Vigour should decay. 4 My Foes against my Fame, and me, With never ceasing Malice speak; Against my Soul they lay their Snares, And mutual Council daily take: "On GOD, say they, he did rely; 'Now take him whilst no Help is nigh." 5 But thou, my GOD, withdraw not far, On thee for speedy Help I call; To Shame and Ruin bring my Foes, Who seek with Craft to work my Fall: And I, who still on thee depend, My Time to come in Praise will spend: Part II 6 Thy righteous Acts and saving Health, My Mouth shall evermore declare; Unable yet to sum them all, Tho' counted o'er with utmost Care: LORD, in thy Strength I will go on, And trust thy Righteousness alone. 7 Thou, Lord, hast taught me from my Youth, To bless and praise thy glorious Name; And ever since thy wond'rous Works Have been with Joy my constant Theme. On them I will with Pleasure dwell, And to the world thy Goodness tell. 8 Then now forsake me not, when I With Age am grey and feeble grown; 'Till I to these and future Times, Thy Strength and mighty Pow'r have shown, For I thy Mercy will proclaim, And spread abroad thy glorious Name. 9 How high thy Justice soars, O GOD! How very great and wond'rous are The mighty Works which Thou hast done? O LORD! who can with Thee compare? Altho' thy Hand hath me oppress'd, Yet shall my Woes be all redress'd. 10 Thro' thee, my Time to come, shall be With growing Pow'r and Greatness crown'd; And me who dismal Years have past, Thy lasting comforts shall surround: Therefore my Harp and Voice I'll raise, To Jacob's GOD, in Songs of Praise. 11 Then grateful Joy shall fill my Mouth And chearful Hymns employ my Voice; My thankful Soul, by thee redeem'd, Shall in thy Strength and Pow'r rejoice; My tongue thy Justice shall proclaim, Because thou brought'st my Foes to Shame, Scripture: Psalm 71 Used With Tune: [In thee I put my stedfast trust]

Preserve me, LORD from crafty Foes

Appears in 2 hymnals Topics: Prophecies Prophetical Curses against the Enemies and Persecutors of the Chruch Lyrics: 1 Preserve me, LORD, from crafty Foes Of base and treacherous Intent; And from the Sons of Violence, On Strife and open Mischief bent. 2 Their sland'ring Tongues the Serpent's Sting, Though keen, in Sharpness does exceed: Between their Lips the Gall of Asps And Adder's mortal Venom breed. 3 Preserve me, LORD, from wicked Hands, Nor leave my helpless Soul forlorn, A Prey to Sons of Violence, Who have my utter Ruin sworn. 4 The Proud for me have laid their Snare, And spread abroad their wily Net; With Traps and Gins, where e'er I move, I find my dang'rous Steps beset. 5 But thus, environ'd with Distress, Thou art my only GOD, I said; LORD, hear my supplicating Voice, That calls to thee for Aid. 6 O LORD, the GOD, whose saving Strength, Kind Succour did to me convey; And cover'd my advent'rous Head, In the fierce Battle's doubtful Day. 7 Permit not their unjust Designs To answer their base Heart's Desire; Lest they, encourag'd by Success, Should yet to bolder Crimes aspire. 8 Let first their Chiefs the sad Effects Of their unjust Oppression mourn; The Blast of their envenom'd Breath, Do thou upon themselves return. 9 Let them, who kindled first the Flame, The first it's Sacrifice become; The Pit Which they design'd for me, Be made their own untimely Tomb. 10 Though Sland'rer's Breath may raise a Storm, That fleeting Breath will quick decay; Their Rage does but the Torrent swell, That bears themselves by Force away. 11 GOD will assert the poor Man's Cause, And speedy Help and Succour give; The Just shall celebrate his Praise, And in his Presence ever live. Scripture: Psalm 140 Used With Tune: [Preserve me, Lord, from crafty Foes]

The wicked Fools must sure suppose

Appears in 1 hymnal Topics: Prophecies Predictions of God's Judgment upon the Ungodly and Wicked Lyrics: 1 The wicked Fools must sure suppose, That GOD is nothing but a Name; This gross Mistake their Practice shows, Since Truth and Justice all disclaim: In each corrupt and sinful Way, Their wicked Hearts have gone astray. 2 The LORD look'd down from Heav'n's high Tow'r, The num'rous Race of Men to view, To see if any own'd his Pow'r, If any Truth or Justice knew. But all he saw were backward gone, None for Religion car'd - not one 3 But are those Workers of Deceit, So very dull and senseless grown, That they like Bread my People eat, And GOD's Almighty Pow'r disown? Will they his Justice ne'er proclaim, Nor call upon his Holy Name? 4 Their causeless Fears shall stronger grow; And all the Enemies of GOD Shall soon be foil'd; his Hands shall throw Their Limbs and shatter'd Bones abroad. Thus shall thy Foes be cloath'd with Shame, Because thy GOD despiseth them. 5 O let thy saving Help appear, Salvation out of Sion send; Thy People's earnest Prayers hear, And to our constant Sighs attend: When thou shall break our servile Band, Loud Shouts of universal Joy Our Joys shall echo through the Land. Scripture: Psalm 53 Used With Tune: [The wicked Fool's must sure suppose]

He's bless'd whose tender Care

Appears in 2 hymnals Topics: Prophecies Of Judas, the Traitor Lyrics: 1 He's bless'd whose tender Care, Relieves the Poor distress'd, When Troubles gather round, The LORD shall give him Rest; His Life with Blessings crown'd, The LORD shall sure prolong; And check the Will of those, Who seek to do him Wrong. 2 If he, in low Estate, Oppress'd with Sickness lie, The LORD will Comfort send, And inward Strength supply; Secure of this, to GOD, I thus my Pray'r address'd, "LORD, heal my wounded Soul, "For I have much trasgress'd!" 3 My Foes, with sland'ring Words, Attempt to wound my Fame; "When shall he die," say they, "And Men forget his Name?" Suppose they Visits make, 'Tis all but empty Show; They gather Mischief then, And vent it when they go. 4 With Whispers, such as these, To hurt me they devise, "His Doom a length is come, "He's fall'n, no more to rise." My own familiar Friend, On whom I most rely'd, Has me, whose Guest he was, With open Scorn defy'd. 5 But thou, my wretched State, In Mercy, LORD, regard, And raise me up, that they May meet their just Reward. Thou suffer'st not my Foes, To triumph in my Fall. Therefore I know thine Ear, Is open when I call. 6 My Life thou dost secure, From Danger and Disgrace; And thou shalt set me still, Before thy glorious Face: Let therefore Israel's LORD From Ages to Age be blest, And all the People's Joy With loud Amen's exprest Scripture: Psalm 41 Used With Tune: [He's bless'd whose tender care]

How blest is he who ne'er consents to walk

Appears in 1 hymnal Topics: Prophecies Predictions of God's Judgment upon the Ungodly and Wicked Lyrics: 1 How blest is he, who ne'er consents to walk By ill Advice nor dares to stand and talk In Sinners' Way, their Vice and Cause maintaining Nor sits with Scorners, Things divine profaning: But in GOD's sacred Law takes great Delight, Still reads by Day and meditates by Night. 2 Like some fair Tree, fix'd by the River's Side, Which bends with Fruit, and spreads its Foliage wide; So shall he flourish, Heav'n his Cause defending, And sweet Success his good Designs attending: In vain the Tempest strives to shake his Leaf, The Son of Joy breaks thro' the clouds of Grief. 3 Not to the Wicked; they no Root shall find, But fly like Chaff before the rapid Wind. The Lord hath not their evil Ways approved, Their Race shall therefore from the Earth be moved. They shall not stand in GOD's most holy Sight, Who only loves the Man that seeketh Right. 4 When GOD with Glory shall in Judgment come, A conscious Guilt shall strike the Sinner dumb; Nor to the Wicked will he grant a Station, Among the pure and righteous Congregation: The Ways of Justice, thus, to Bliss shall tend, Whilst Sinners' Paths must in their Ruin end. Scripture: Psalm 1 Used With Tune: [How blest is he, who ne'er consents to walk]

O LORD our GOD! how great art thou!

Appears in 1 hymnal Topics: Prophecies Of Jesus Christ, concerning his Humiliation and Exultation Lyrics: 1 O LORD, our GOD! how great art thou! To whom all earthly Creatures bow; To thy unbounded Sway subjected: How great is through the World thy Fame! Oh! may thy ever glorious Name Be still, with Rev'rence due, respected. 2 In Heav'n thy wond'rous Acts are sung; The Angel's Voice and Cherub' Tongue, Are endless Songs for thee preparing: And yet thy Wisdom doth ordain, That Infants should in heav'nly Strain, Be still thy Praise with Joy declaring. 3 Through thee the weak confound the strong, And so thou quell'st the wicked Throng Who have in evil Ways persisted: Thy Pow'r shall crush thy haughty Foes, Who boldly dare thy Strength oppose, And have thy mighty Arm resisted. 4 When, in Amazement lost, I stand, And view the Wonders of thy Hand, The Heav'ns, thy holy Habitation; The radiant Moon, that rules the Night, And glitt'ring Stars of feebler Light, With all the Works of thy Creation; 5 LORD, what is Man! surpriz'd, I cry, That thou should'st thus his Wants supply, And take him under thy Protection! Or what his Offspring, prove so kind, To keep them ever in thy Mind, And guide them by thy sure Direction. Part II: 6 Him cloath'd with Pow'r thou didst create, And crown'd with Dignity and State, In high exalted Station placed; Ev'n next to thy caelestial Train; Thou gav'st him o'er all thy Works to reign. 7 For him the lowing Oxen toil, To make the Earth with Plenty smile, And give their Labours uncomplaining: The bleating Sheep their Fleeces yield: He rules the Creatures of the Field, And those in desart Wilds remaining. 8 To him thou hast in Mercy giv'n The Birds that mount the azure Heav'n, With out-stretch'd Wings the Air dividing: And all the Fish that thro' the Sea, Delight to cut their liquid Way, With glossy Fins for ever gliding. 9 O LORD, our LORD, how great art thou! Thou whom all earthly Creatures bow; To thy unbounded Sway subjected: How great is thro' the World thy Fame! Oh may thy ever glorious Name, Be still with Rev'rence due respected! Scripture: Psalm 8 Used With Tune: [O Lord, our God! how great art thou]

The heathen hosts, O God

Appears in 2 hymnals Topics: Prophecies Prophetical Curses against the Enemies and Persecutors of the Chruch Lyrics: 1 The Heathen Hosts, O GOD! Have thy Possession seiz'd; Thy sacred House defil'd, Thy holy City raz'd. The Bodies of thy Saints, Abroad unburied lay; Their Flesh expos'd to Beasts, Or rav'nous Birds a Prey. 2 Their Blood, like Water, was Around Jerus'lem shed; And none were left to pay The Duties to the Dead: The Foe our small Remains With loud Reproaches wound; And are made the Sport Of all the Nations round. 3 How long wilt thou be wrathj? LORD, must we ever mourn? And shall thy jealous Rage, Like Fire for ever burn? Our Lands that know not thee, Thy heavy Vengeance show'r; Those Kingdoms let it crush, That have not own'd thy Pow'r. 4 Their hungry Jaws have prey'd On Jacob's chosen Race; And to a Desart turn'd, Their fruitful Dwelling Place. O think not on our Sins, But speedily prevent The Ruin of thy Saints, Almost with Sorrow spent. 5 Thy Help, O GOD, impart And free our Souls from Blame, So shall thy wond'rous Love Exalt thy glorious Name. Let Infidels that say, "Where is the GOD they boast"? In Vengeance, for thy Saints, Perceive thee to their Cost. 6 LORD, hear the Pris'ner's Moans! Thy saving Pow'r extend; Preserve them, doom'd to die, From their untimely End! Those who blaspheme thy Name, Do thou, O GOD, destroy; Against the Nations round, Resistless Pow'r employ. 7 For they have us opprest; Then let them be repaid, With Sorrows sev'n Times more Than what on us they laid. So we thy humble Flock, Shall ever praise thy Name; And our unwearied Thanks, From Age to Age proclaim. Scripture: Psalm 79 Used With Tune: [The Heathen Hosts, O God]

The King, O LORD! with Songs of Praise

Appears in 1 hymnal Topics: Prophecies Predictions of God's Judgment upon the Ungodly and Wicked Lyrics: 1 The King, O LORD! with Songs of Praise, Shall in thy Strength rejoice; And with a chearful Voice. To thee shall lofty Anthems raise. With thy Salvation crown'd, He awes the Nations round. 2 For whatsoe'er his Lips request, Thou dost to him impart, The Wishes of his Heart. Thou hast with thy Acceptance bless'd; And to his humble Pray'r Didst lend a gracious Ear. 3 Thy Mercy and thy tender Care, Thou dost to him extend; A Crown of Gold thou mad'st him wear, Which ever shall endure, Since thou hast fix'd it sure. 4 He pray'd for Life, and thou, O LORD, Didst to his Pray'r attend His span thou didst extend; And kindly did to him afford, A Life of endless Joy, Which Death can ne'er destroy. 5 Thy sure Defence shall spread his Fame Through all the Nations round; His Deeds with Triumph crown'd Shall far advance his glorious Name; His Foes shall Homage pay, To his superior Sway. 6 Eternal Blessings thou bestow'st, And on his Royal Head, Dost tender Mercies shed: Whilst thou to him unclouded, shew'st The Brightness of thy Face. And mak'st his Joys encrease; Part II 7 Because the King on GOD alone, For timely Aid relies, The LORD his Wants supplies; His Mercy still supports his Throne, Against each daring Foe, That him would overthrow. 8 But, righteous LORD, thy stubborn Foes, shall not secure remain, Nor long their Place maintain; Thy vengeful Arm shall find out those, Who in Defiance stand, Of thy most just Command. 9 When Thou against them dost engage, And thy dread Pow'r employ; Their Forces to destroy: Thy Wrath shall, like an Oven's Rage, Them and their Hopes and them consume, In one tremendous Doom. 10 Nor shalt thy righteous Anger cease, Or with their Ruin end; But to their Seed extend; To root out all their guilty Race, And from the Page of Fame, Blot out their very Name. 11 For all their Thoughts, engag'd on Ill, To Malice were resign'd, And wicked Schemes design'd; But thou with watchful Care didst still The bad Effects prevent, On their most base Intent. 12 In vain, by shameful Flight they try, To shun thy dreadful Pow'r, Whilst thou dost round them show'r Thy fatal Darts, that swiftly fly, And with restless Might, O'ertake them in their Flight. 13 Thus, LORD, thy wond'rous Strength disclose, And thus with Glory crown'd, Be thy great Deeds renown'd; Whilst we glad Songs of Praise compose, To magnify the Fame Of thy most holy Name. Scripture: Psalm 21 Used With Tune: [The King, O Lord, with songs of praise]
