1 Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott,
Ein gute Wehr und Waffen.
Er hilft uns frei aus aller Not,
Die uns jetzt hat betroffen.
Der alt böse Feind
Mit Ernst er es jetzt meint;
Gross Macht und viel List
Sein grausam Rüstung ist,
Auf Erd ist nicht seinsgleichen.
2 Mit unsrer Macht ist nichts getan,
Wir sind gar bald verloren;
Es streit’t für uns der rechte Mann,
Den Gott selbst hat verkoren.
Fragst du nun, wer der ist?
Er heisset Jesus Christ,
Der Herr Zebaoth,
Und ist kein andrer Gott;
Das Feld muss er behalten.
3 Und wenn die Welt voll Teufel wär
Und wollt uns gar verschlingen,
So fürchten wir uns nicht so sehr,
Es soll uns doch gelingen.
Der Fürst dieser Welt,
Wie sauer er sich stellt,
Tut er uns doch nicht;
Das macht, er ist gericht’t,
Ein Wörtlein kann ihn fällen.
4 Das Wort sie sollen lassen stahn
Und kein Dank dazu haben;
Er ist bei uns wohl auf dem Plan
Mit seinem Geist und Gaben.
Nehmen sie den Leib,
Gut, Ehre, Kind und Weib,
Lass fahren dahin,
Sie habens kein Gewinn,
Das Reich muss uns doch bleiben.

1 A safe stronghold our God is still,
A trusty shield and weapon;
He'll help us clear from all the ill
That hath us now o'ertaken.
The ancient prince of hell
Hath ris'n with purpose fell;
Strong mail of craft and power
He weareth in this hour;
On earth is not his fellow.
2 With force of arms we nothing can,
Full soon were we down-ridden;
But for us fights the proper Man,
Whom God Himself hath bidden.
Ask ye, who is this same?
Christ Jesus is His name,
Of Sabaoth the Lord,
Sole God to be adored,
'Tis He must win the battle.
3 And were this world all devils o'er,
And watching to devour us,
We lay it not to heart so sore;
Not they can overpower us.
And let the prince of ill
Look grim as e'er he will,
He harms us not a whit;
For why? his doom is writ;
A word shall quickly slay him.
4 God's word, for all their craft and force,
One moment will not linger,
But, spite of hell, shall have its course;
'Tis written by His finger.
And, though they take our life,
Goods, honour, children, wife,
Yet is their profit small;
These things shall vanish all,
The city of God remaineth.
