Behold, There Comes An Hour Unknown

Author: Horace L. Hastings Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 4 hymnals Lyrics: 1 Behold, there comes an hour unknown, When high upon His burning throne, The Lord, who died for sinful men, To judge the world shall come again. 2 Obedient to His high command, From every nation, tribe and land, The gathered sons of Adam meet Around that awful judgment seat. 3 Behold the Judge! that brow of flame Once wore the thorns and bore the shame; His blood a Roman cross once dyed— That Judge for me was crucified. 4 The voice of blasphemy is dumb, The sinner’s day of fear has come! The traitor’s kiss, the scorner’s sneer Are known no more: the Judge is here. 5 Ah, see the myriad throngs divide! To right and left they turn aside— What wailing bursts from every heart Which hears the awful word, "Depart!" 6 But lo! a fair immortal throng Breaks forth in strains of endless song, To hear the words, "Ye blessed come! Receive your kingdom and your home." 7 Oh, sinner, you that Judge must meet, And face that awful judgment seat; Repent, and give Him now your heart Ere you shall hear His word, "Depart." The God Who Sits Enthroned on High (1)

Author: Anonymous Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 13 hymnals First Line: The God who sits enthroned on high Lyrics: 1. The God who sits enthroned on high The foolish to their heart deny; Not one does good; corrupt in thought, Unrighteous works their hands have wrought. 2. From Heaven the Lord with searching eye Looked down the sons of men to try, To see if any understood And sought for God, the only good. 3. From righteousness they all depart, Corrupt are all, and vile in heart; Yea, every man has evil done; Not one does good, not even one. 4. Has knowledge with the wicked failed, That they My people have assailed, That they delight in works of shame, And call not on Jehovah’s name? 5. Thy lowly servant they despise, Because he on the Lord relies; But they shall tremble yet in fear, For to the righteous God is near. 6. O that from Zion, His abode, Salvation were on us bestowed! When God His exiles shall restore, They shall in song His grace adore. Used With Tune: BRESLAU Text Sources: The Psalter (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania: The United Presbyterian Board of Publication, 1912), number 23

Repent, the Kingdom Draweth Nigh

Author: Anna B. Hoppe Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 8 hymnals Lyrics: 1. Repent, the kingdom draweth nigh, The herald of the Lord doth cry. Ye sinners lost through Adam’s fall, Will ye not hearken to the call? 2. Repent! The gracious call believe, Haste His forgiveness to receive. The Prince of Life, incarnate Word, Life and salvation can afford. 3. Divine Redeemer, glorious King! Repentant hearts to Thee we bring. Thy holy blood for us was spilt, Cleanse us from all the stains of guilt. 4. Drawn by Thy Spirit, through Thy Word, Thine invitation have we heard. In answer to Thy sweet request, We come to Thee, O Christ, for rest. 5. Thy pardon, full, complete, and free, Removes sin’s awful penalty. Our Father’s love is now restored; Thou hast redeemed us, dearest Lord. 6. Let us Thy name forever bless, On earth Thy Gospel truth confess, Till saved by grace, through faith in Thee, The gates of paradise we see. Used With Tune: BRESLAU

O Lord, how many Miseries

Appears in 2 hymnals Lyrics: I. O Lord, how many Miseries Assault and discompose my Peace; The Path that leads to SION'S Gate Is full of Thorns, and very streight. II. How hard it is for Flesh and Blood To seek the everlasting Good; I know not where to turn my Face, But, Christ! to thy redeeming Grace. III. My Heart has never been dismay'd, Whene'er to thee it look'd for Aid; No Mortal yet was ever lost, Who put in CHRIST alone his Trust. IV. That thou art God, as well as Man, Lord, thy redeeming Pow'r makes plain; No greater Wonder has been heard, Than this, that God in Flesh appear'd. V. He sav'd us by his Death and Tomb, From Sin, and from the Wrath to come: My Jesu, Lord and God alone! What Name is sweeter than thy own? VI. No Grief can ever be so sore, But thy Salvation cheers us more; No Pain so raging but thy Name Can still asswage and heal the same. Vii. Nay, though my Flesh and Heart shou'd fail, Thy Presence, Lord! will yet prevail; Enjoying thee, and thy free Love, I share the Bliss of Saints Above. VIII. Thine would I be in Soul and Mind, And leave Sin, Death, and Hell behind; Nor can I better fix my Trust, Than in the God of whom I boast. IX. Thou never cast forsake thy Child, That by thy Grace is reconcil'd; Thou art the Shepherd of my soul, That ever keeps me sound and whole. Par the Second: X. Thou art my Comfort and Renown, My Treasure and eternal Crown; No Tongue can tell, no Voice can sing What Joy the Name of Christ doth bring. XI. He that has Faith and Charity, Can by Experience join with me; I'd make this bold Assertion good, And dare to seal it with my Blood. XII. Were there no Joy in God for me, 'Twere better I should never be; For he that has not CHRIST within, Is dead in Trespasses and Sin. XIII. My Soul's fond Bridegroom and Delight; Thou Pearl, above all others bright, In thee I justly more rejoice, Than in the World's most glitt'ring Toys. XIV. As often as I think on thee, My Heart for Joy doth leap in me; When e'er I fix in thee my Hope, I find a Comfort bears me up. XV. When in my Pain I pray and sing, My Heart is quite another Thing; Thy Spirit witnesses, that this Is but the Fore-taste of thy Bliss. XVI. Therefore while Life remains with me, I'll bear the Cross and follow thee: To Thee direct this Heart of mine; Let it to Nothing else incline, XVII. And aid me by thy mighty Grace, With Joy to run my Christian Race; Help me to conquer Flesh and Blood, And make my Christian Warfare good. XVIII. Preserve my Faith from Error free, That I may live and die in Thee; My Saviour, grant me my Desire, Let me be Thine when I expire. How beauteous were the marks divine

Author: A. C. Coxe Appears in 208 hymnals Lyrics: 1 How beauteous were the marks divine That in Thy meekness used to shine That lit Thy lonely pathway, trod In wondrous love, O Son of God. 2 O who like Thee, so calm, so bright, Thou Son of man, Thou Light of Light; O who like Thee did ever go So patient through a world of woe? 3 O who like Thee so humbly bore The scorn, the scoffs of men before? So meek, forgiving, Godlike, high, So glorious in humility! 4 And all Thy life's unchanging years, A man of sorrows and of tears, The cross, where all our sins were laid, Upon Thy bending shoulders weighed. 5 And death, that sets the prisoner free, Was pang and scoff and scorn to Thee; Yet love through all Thy torture glowed, And mercy with Thy life-blood flowed. 5 O in Thy light be mine to go, Illuming all this way of woe; And give me ever on the road To trace Thy footsteps, Son of God!
