1780 - 1859 Person Name: Freeman Lewis, 1780-1859 Scripture: Luke 4:1-3 Composer (attributed to) of "BOURBON" in Hymnal Supplement 1991 Freeman Lewis USA 1780-1859. Born at Basking Ridge, NJ, he became a surveyor, writer, and traveling school teacher who played the organ and wrote music on the side. His family moved to Fayette, PA, in 1796. In 1809 he married Rebecca A Craft, and they had 11 children: Runyan, David, George, James, John, William, Levi. Alpheus, Thomas, Margaret, and Mary Ann. Three died young (of flux and scarlet fever). He compiled and published a book of camp meeting hymns and other sacred music:”The beauties of harmony” (1813-16-18), which included some of his own compositions. An appendix to it contained explanations of musical terms amd rules and principles of composition. These were sometimes used in singing schools. He also served as county surveyor of Fayette County, PA (1823-36) and helped Jonathan Knight survey and find a route for the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal. He served as organist for the Presbyterian Church in Uniontown, PA. His wife died in 1844, after which he moved to Knox. OH. His works include a 300 page family history, attesting to his being well-educated and having interest in many subjects. He died at Knox, OH. John Perry

Dale Grotenhuis

1931 - 2012 Person Name: Dale Grotenhuis, 1931-2012 Scripture: Luke 4:1-15 Harmonizer of "GENEVAN 98/118 / RENDEZ À DIEU" in Lift Up Your Hearts Dale Grotenhuis (b. Cedar Grove, WI, 1931; d. Jenison, Mi, August 17, 2012) was a member of the 1987 Psalter Hymnal 1987 Revision Committee, and was professor of music and director of choral music at Dordt College, Sioux Center, Iowa, from 1960 until he retired in 1994 to concentrate on composition. Educated at Calvin College; Michigan State University, Lansing; and Ohio State University, Columbus; he combined teaching with composition throughout his career and was a widely published composer of choral music. He also directed the Dordt choir in a large number of recordings, including many psalm arrangements found in the 1959 edition of the Psalter Hymnal. Before coming to Dordt, Grotenhuis taught music at Christian high schools in Washington and Michigan. Under his direction, the Dordt College concert choir participated in annual tours that took members throughout the United States, Canada and Europe. He loved the church and the music of the church. Julius Röntgen

1855 - 1932 Person Name: Julius Röntgen, 1855-1933 Scripture: Luke 4:1 Arranger of "IN BABILONE" in Worship and Rejoice An important Dutch pianist, composer, conductor, scholar, and editor, Julius Rontgen (b. Leipzig, Germany, 1855; d. Utrecht, the Netherlands, 1932) studied music in Leipzig with well-known German teachers. In 1877 he moved to Amsterdam, where he first taught at the Amsterdam Conservatory. In 1886 he became conductor of the Society for the Advancement of Musical Art. He returned to the Conservatory as director in 1918, and then retired in 1924 to devote himself to composition. He was a friend of leading composers of his day, including Liszt, Brahms, and Grieg, and wrote a biography of Grieg. Rontgen's compositions include symphonies, chamber works, operas, and film scores. Windlesham, Surrey, England, 1893) As a young boy, Elvey was a chorister in Canterbury Cathedral. Living and studying with his brother Stephen, he was educated at Oxford and at the Royal Academy of Music. At age nineteen Elvey became organist and master of the boys' choir at St. George Chapel, Windsor, where he remained until his retirement in 1882. He was frequently called upon to provide music for royal ceremonies such as Princess Louise's wedding in 1871 (after which he was knighted).
