P. P. Bilhorn

Ferris Holden, P. H. Roblin (a anagram of his name) ================ Peter Philip Bilhorn was born, in Mendota, IL. His father died in the Civil War 3 months before he was born. His early life was not easy. At age 8, he had to leave school to help support the family. At age 15, living in Chicago, he had a great singing voice and sang in German beer gardens there. At this time, he and his brother also formed the Eureka Wagon & Carriage Works in Chicago, IL. At 18 Peter became involved in gospel music, studying under George F. Root and George C. Stebbins. He traveled to the Dakotas and spent some time sharing the gospel with cowboys there. He traveled extensively with D. L. Moody, and was Billy Sunday's song leader on evangelistic endeavors. His evangelistic work took him into all the states of the Union, Great Britain, and other foreign countries. In London he conducted a 4000 voice choir in the Crystal Palace, and Queen Victoria invited him to sing in Buckinghm Palace. He wrote some 2000 gospel songs in his lifetime. He also invented a folding portable telescoping pump organ, weighing 16 lbs. It could be set up in about a minute. He used it at revivals in the late 19th century. He founded the Bilhorn Folding Organ Company in Chicago. IL, and his organ was so popular it was sold all over the world. He edited 10 hymnals and published 11 gospel songbooks. Annabel Morris Buchanan

1888 - 1983 Person Name: Annabel Morris Buchanan Scripture: Mark 5:23 Arranger of "LAND OF REST" in Glory to God Born: October 22, 1888, Groesbeck, Texas. Died: January 6, 1983, Paducah, Kentucky. Buried: Round Hill Cemetery, Marion, Virginia. Daughter of William Caruthers Morris and Anna Virginia Foster, and wife of John Preston Buchanan, Anna received her musical training at the Landon Conservatory of Music, Dallas, Texas (to which she received a scholarship at age 15); the Guilmant Organ School, New York; and studying with Emil Liebling, William Carl, and Cornelius Rybner, among others. She taught music in Texas; at Halsell College, Oklahoma (1907-08); and at Stonewall Jackson College, Abingdon, Virginia (1909-12). In 1912, she married John Preston Buchanan, a lawyer, writer, and senator, from Marion, Virginia; they moved to their home, Roseacre, in Marion, where they had four children. Buchanan served as president of the Virginia Federation of Music Clubs in 1927, and helped organize the first Virginia State Choral Festival in 1928, and White Top Folk Festivals (1931-41). After her husband’s death in 1937, she sold Roseacre and moved to Richmond, Virginia, with her two youngest children. She taught music theory and composition and folk music at the University of Richmond (1939-40); during the summers, at the New England Music Camp, Lake Messalonskee, Oakland, Maine (1938-40); and at the Huckleberry Mountain Artists Colony near Hendersonville, North Carolina, in 1941. She later moved to Harrisonburg, Virginia, and taught at Madison College (1944-48). In 1951, she moved to Paducah, Kentucky. She later became the archivist of the folk music collecting project of the National Federation of Music Clubs, serving until 1963. Buchanan’s works include: Folk-Hymns of America (New York: J. Thomas H. Troeger

1945 - 2022 Scripture: Mark 5:43 Author of "The Scantest Touch of Grace Can Heal" in Scripture Song Database Thomas Troeger (1945-2022), professor of Christian communication at Yale Divinity school, was a well known preacher, poet, and musician. He was a fellow of Silliman College, held a B.A. from Yale University; B.D. Colgate Rochester Divinity School; S.T. D. Dickinson College, and was awarded an honorary D.D. from Virginia Theological Seminary. He was ordained in the Presbyterian Church in 1970 and the Episcopal Church in 1999, and remained dually aligned with both traditions. Troerger led conferences and lectures in worship and preaching throughout North America, as well as in Denmark, Holland, Australia, Japan, and Africa. He served as national chaplain to the American Guild of Organists, and for at least three years he hosted the Season of Worship broadcast for Cokesbury. He was president of the Academy of Homiletics as well as Societas Homiletica. He had, as of 2009, written 22 books in the areas of preaching, poetry, hymnody, and worship. Many of his hymn texts are found in New Hymns for the Lectionary (Oxford, 1992), and God, You Made All Things for Singing (Oxford, 2009). Laura de Jong

Gracia Grindal

b. 1943 Scripture: Mark 5:21-42 Versifier of "There Was Jesus by the Water" in The New Century Hymnal Gracia Grindal (b. Powers Lake, ND, 1943). Grindal was educated at Augsburg College, Minneapolis, Minnesota; the University of Arkansas; and Luther-Northwestern Seminary, St. Paul, Minnesota, where she has served since 1984 as a professor of pastoral theology and communications. From 1968 to 1984 she was a professor of English and poet-in-residence at Luther College, Decorah, Iowa. Included in her publications are Sketches Against the Dark (1981), Scandinavian Folksongs (1983), Lessons in Hymnwriting (1986, 1991), We Are One in Christ: Hymns, Paraphrases, and Translations (1996), Good News of Great Joy: Advent Devotions for the Home (1994 with Karen E. Hong), Lina Sandell, the Story of Her Hymns (2001 with John Jansen), and A Revelry of Harvest: New and Selected Poems (2002).
