George C. Hugg

1848 - 1907 Person Name: Geo. C. Hugg Hymnal Number: 37 Composer of "[Scattering precious seed by the wayside]" in Sing Unto the Lord George Crawford Hugg USA 1848-1907. Born near Haddonfield, NJ, he became choirmaster at the Berlin, NJ, Presbyterian Church at age 12. At age 14 he published his first song, “Walk in the light”, which became very popular. He married Anne E Ketchum, and they had a daughter, Evangeline. He served as choirmaster of the Tabernacle Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia, and also the Broad Street and Arch Street Methodist Episcopal Churches there. He was also closely associated with the Harper Memorial Presbyterian Church there. He was a prolific composer with over 2000 works, publishing 18 books of revival and Sunday school music, and 90 songs for special occasions (Christmas, Easter, etc.). He died in Philadelphia, PA. Charles F. Butler

Person Name: C. F. Butler Hymnal Number: 211 Author of "Where Jesus Is, 'Tis Heaven" in Sing Unto the Lord Butler, Charles F. (fl. 1898). Known only from his "Since Christ Jesus my soul from sin set free" (Refrain: "O Hallelujah, yes, 'tis heaven"). This was copyrighted by James M. Asa Hull

1828 - 1907 Hymnal Number: 83 Author of "Walk in the Light" in Sing Unto the Lord Asa Hull USA 1828-1907. Born in Keene, NY, he became a music publisher in New York City. He married Emma F Atherton, and they had a daughter, Harriett. He wrote many tunes and authored temperance rallying songs. He published 33 works, of which 21 were songbooks, between 1863-1895. Horticulturalist and editor of a Wisconsin farm journal. Many of his verses were used to fill empty corners of the journal. He also wrote many books on gardening. Roswell Park

1807 - 1869 Person Name: R. Park Hymnal Number: 163 Author of "Jesus Spreads His Banner O'er Us" in Sing Unto the Lord Park, Roswell, D.D., of the Protestant Episcopal Church, was born at Lebanon, Connecticut, Oct. 1, 1807, and educated at Union College and West Point. Previous to receiving Holy Orders he was in the army, and also held the appointment of Professor of Chemistry in the University of Pennsylvania. He was ordained in 1843, was President of Racine College, Wisconsin (1852-59), Chancellor of the same College (1858-63); and Principal of a school in Chicago from 1863 to his death. He died at Chicago, July 16, 1869. He published Sketch of West Point, 1840; Pantology, 1841; Handbook for European Travel, 1853; and Poems, 1836. His best known hymn is for Holy Communion. It begins "Jesus spreads His banner o'er us," and was published in his Poems, 1836. It is in common use in Great Britain and America. [Rev. F. M.
