Timothy Dudley-Smith

b. 1926 Person Name: Timothy Dudley-Smith, b. 1926 Scripture: 2 Corinthians 9:10 Author of "Faith and Truth and Life Bestowing" in Lutheran Service Book Timothy Dudley-Smith (b. 1926) Educated at Pembroke College and Ridley Hall, Cambridge, Dudley-Smith has served the Church of England since his ordination in 1950. He has occupied a number of church posi­tions, including parish priest in the diocese of Southwark (1953-1962), archdeacon of Norwich (1973-1981), and bishop of Thetford, Norfolk, from 1981 until his retirement in 1992. He also edited a Christian magazine, Crusade, which was founded after Billy Graham's 1955 London crusade. Dudley-Smith began writing comic verse while a student at Cambridge; he did not begin to write hymns until the 1960s. Many of his several hundred hymn texts have been collected in Lift Every Heart: Collected Hymns 1961-1983 (1984), Songs of Deliverance: Thirty-six New Hymns (1988), and A Voice of Singing (1993). The writer of Christian Literature and the Church (1963), Someone Who Beckons (1978), and Praying with the English Hymn Writers (1989), Dudley-Smith has also served on various editorial committees, including the committee that published Psalm Praise (1973). Ken Medema

b. 1943 Scripture: 2 Corinthians 9:15 Author of "Use These Gifts" in Lift Up Your Hearts Ken Medema (b. Grand Rapids, Michigan, 1943) is a song writer, composer, recording artist, and story-teller through music. Blind from birth, Ken began playing the piano at age five and studied classical music by reading Braille. He graduated from Grand Rapids Christian High School and studied music therapy at Michigan State University in Lansing, Michigan. As a music therapist in both Indiana and New Jersey, he began writing songs for hurting teenagers, an experience that helped to launch a career of writing songs on Christian life that has taken him to venues large and small all over North America and beyond. He responds to what he hears and sees in his heart at particular events, often improvising songs on the spot, offering compassion, honesty and desire for integrity in both worship and life. In 1985 he began Brier Patch Music, which continues to publish his music and recordings, including 26 CDs. Bert Polman

Joseph Parry

1841 - 1903 Person Name: Joseph Parry, 1841-1903 Scripture: 2 Corinthians 9:8 Composer of "ABERYSTWYTH" in The Hymnal Joseph Parry (b. Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorganshire, Wales, 1841; d. Penarth, Glamorganshire, 1903) was born into a poor but musical family. Although he showed musical gifts at an early age, he was sent to work in the puddling furnaces of a steel mill at the age of nine. His family immigrated to a Welsh settlement in Danville, Pennsylvania in 1854, where Parry later started a music school. He traveled in the United States and in Wales, performing, studying, and composing music, and he won several Eisteddfodau (singing competition) prizes. Parry studied at the Royal Academy of Music and at Cambridge, where part of his tuition was paid by interested community people who were eager to encourage his talent. From 1873 to 1879 he was professor of music at the Welsh University College in Aberystwyth. After establishing private schools of music in Aberystwyth and in Swan sea, he was lecturer and professor of music at the University College of South Wales in Cardiff (1888-1903). Parry composed oratorios, cantatas, an opera, orchestral and chamber music, as well as some four hundred hymn tunes. Bert Polman

Person Name: Diana Kodner, B. 1957 Scripture: 2 Corinthians 9:14 Arranger of "NEW BRITAIN" in Gather Comprehensive Diana Kodner Gokce holds a double M.M. in Music from Northwestern University specializing in voice/opera and conducting. As an undergraduate, Diana was a flute major at Northwestern University. She has been a flutist in the Minnesota Orchestra, performing under Leonard Slatkin, Stanislaw Skrowaczewski, and Jean-Pierre Rampal, to name but a few conductors. At the age of 17 Diana conducted the Minnesota Orchestra in a young people's concert as winner of the Urban Arts conducting competition. For six years Diana was conductor and musical director of the Mozart Sinfonia. She has been a conductor of choirs at Loyola University, National-Louis University, and Holy Name Cathedral in Chicago. Diana has authored several books including Handbook for Cantors (Liturgy Training Publications) and Sing God a Simple Song Volumes I and II (Treehaus Communications). She was the editor of A Sourcebook about Music and the Gather Comprehensive Hymnal, first edition (G.I.A. Publications). She was also the conductor for the choral recordings: Catholic Classics, V.I and II (G.I.A. Publications) and both flute and vocal soloist on the Taize recording "Wait for the Lord," from the same publisher. Diana was senior editor of Clavier Magazine and the editor of both Flute Talk and Flute Explorer magazines (The Instrumentalist Company). As editor of Flute Talk Diana interviewed the great flutist Sir James Galway and Jazz flutist Steve Kujala. Most recently Diana was music director for the DVD and CD series from Egghead Learning Systems: As I Grow, for children from birth to 18 months. For 11 years she was the music specialist at Baker Demonstration School in Wilmette, Illinois, and performed as a flutist in the chamber ensemble "Diletto Musicale." Beginning with the 2012-2013 school year, she is the middle school music teacher at The Frances Xavier Warde School, Holy Name Cathedral Campus in Chicago. Diana Kodner
