The praises of our God, with impious sneer?
Shall they with blasphemy our songs deride,
While thus we sing to sooth their barb'rous pride?
5 O dear-lov'd Salem, if I thee forget,
And that bright hill, where fix'd our God his seat;
If I not thee 'bove ev'ry good desire,
May then my hand forget to tune the lyre;
May fail my voice, when I, as wont, wou'd sing
My daily hymns to our Almighty king.
Nor thou, Jehovah, thou forget the wrongs,
That fell from Edoms vile invenon'd tongues;
When with unbated malice they egg'd on
The rageful foe to raze the sacred town.
8 Thou too, O Babylon, thy fate shalt mourn,
And sure destruclion waits thee in thy turn;
Happy is he, who in our cause shall rise,
And well repay thy horrid cruelties!
9 Happy, who, deaf unto the matron's moans,
Shall dash thy tender infants 'gainst the stones!

when justice stands denied,
when greed and tyranny and wrong
prevail on every side?
Shall silent fall our voice of praise,
as on the willows hung
the harps that told of happier days
when songs of home were sung?
2 Yet still we sing as Moses sang
beside the parted wave,
when Canaan's skies in triumph rang
to God the strong to save.
We too in psalms like David sing,
as David's faith we claim,
who sang as shepherd-boy and king
of God's eternal name.
3 And we have blessings more than they
in Christ our risen Lord,
himself our Life and Truth and Way,
his Spirit on us poured.
For ours the cross where Jesus died,
the love that bore our sins;
to him, enthroned and glorified,

2 When our wound is left to fester, though the pain goes deep,
when we've sown a hundred whirlwinds, but have yet to reap,
when the platitudes of peace only make our fears increase,
with a poem and a story we will sing your song.
3 When the palace looks at poverty with scornful eyes,
when the scroll of truth is shredded by a leader's lies,
when the glory of the cross is a propaganda gloss,

4 We will break the jar of plenty by the gates of gold,
