Comfort, Comfort Ye My People

Author: J. Olearius, 1611-84 ; C. Winkworth, 1827-78 Meter: 8.7.8.7.7.7.8.8 Appears in 126 hymnals Topics: Advent 3 First Line: "Comfort, comfort ye My people Lyrics: 1 "Comfort, comfort ye My people, Speak ye peace," thus saith our God. "Comfort those who sit in darkness, Mourning 'neath their sorrows' load. Speak ye to Jerusalem Of the peace that waits for them; Tell her that her sins I cover, And her warfare now is over." 2 Yea, her sins our God will pardon, Blotting out each dark misdeed; All that well deserved His anger He will no more see or heed. She hath suffered many a day; Now her griefs have passed away. God will change her pining sadness Into ever-springing gladness. 3 Hark, the herald's voice is crying In the desert far and near, Bidding all men to repentance, Since the kingdom now is here. Oh that warning cry obey! Now prepare for God a way; Let the valleys rise to meet Him And the hills bow down to greet Him. 4 Make ye straight what long was crooked; Make the rougher places plain. Let your hearts be true and humble As befits His holy reign. For the glory of the Lord Now o'er earth is shed abroad, And all flesh shall see the token That His Word is never broken. God unknown, God alone calls my heart eternally home. 2 Human pride and earthly glory, sword and crown, betray our trust; what with care and toil is built up, tower and temple, fall to dust. But God's power, hour by hour, is my temple and my tower. 3 Daily doth the almighty giver bounteous gifts on us bestow. God's desire our soul delighteth, pleasure leads us where we go. Love doth stand hand in hand; joy doth wait on God's command. 4 God's great goodness eye endureth, deepest wisdom, passing thought: splendour, light and life attending, beauty springeth out of naught. Evermore from God's store new-born worlds rise and adore. Used With Tune: MICHAEL

I cannot tell

Author: William Young Fullerton, 1857-1932 Meter: 11.10.11.10.11.10.11.12 Appears in 33 hymnals Topics: Year B Advent 3 First Line: I cannot tell how he whom angels worship Lyrics: 1 I cannot tell how he whom angels worship should stoop to love the peoples of the earth, or why as shepherd he should seek the wand'rer with his mysterious promise of new birth. But this I know, that he was born of Mary when Bethl'em's manger was his only home, and that he lived at Nazareth and laboured, and so the Saviour, Saviour of the world, is come. 2 I cannot tell how silently he suffered, as with his peace he graced this place of tears, or how his heart upon the cross was broken, the crown of pain to three and thirty years. But this I know, he heals the broken-hearted, and stays our sin, and calms our lurking fear, and lifts the burden from the heavy laden, for still the Saviour, Saviour of the world is here. 3 I cannot tell how he will win the nations, how he will claim his earthly heritage, how satisfy the needs and aspirations of east and west, of sinner and of sage. But this I know, all flesh shall see his glory, and he shall reap the harvest he has sown, and some glad day his sun will shine in splendour when he the Saviour, Saviour of the world, is known. 4 I cannot tell how all the lands shall worship, when, at his bidding, ev'ry storm is stilled, or who can say how great the jubilation when ev'ry heart with perfect love is filled. But this I know, the skies will thrill with rapture, and myriad, myriad human voices sing, and earth to heav'n and heav'n to earth, will answer: 'At last the Saviour, Saviour of the world, is King!' Scripture: Isaiah 40:5 Used With Tune: LONDONDERRY AIR

When the King Shall Come Again

Author: Christopher Idle, b. 1938 Meter: 7.6.7.6 D Appears in 20 hymnals Topics: Advent 3, Year A Lyrics: 1 When the King shall come again, All his pow'r revealing, Splendor shall announce his reign, Life and joy and healing: Earth no longer in decay, Hope no more frustrated; This is God's redemption day Longingly awaited. 2 In the desert trees take root Fresh from his creation; Plants and flow'rs and sweetest fruit Join the celebration; Rivers spring up from the earth, Barren lands adorning: Valleys, this is your new birth, Mountains, greet the morning! 3 Strengthen feeble hands and knees, Fainting hearts, be cheerful! God who comes for such as these Seeks and saves the fearful; Now the deaf can hear the dumb Sing away their weeping; Blind eyes see the injured come Walking, running, leaping. 4 There God's highway shall be seen Where no roaring lion, Nothing evil or unclean Walks the road to Zion; Ransomed people homeward bound All your praises voicing, See your Lord with glory crowned. Share in his rejoicing! Scripture: Isaiah 35:1-6 Used With Tune: GAUDEAMUS PARITER

Ye who own the faith of Jesus

Author: Vincent Stuckey Stratton Coles, 1845-1929 Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Appears in 23 hymnals Topics: Year A Advent 3; Year B Advent 3 Lyrics: 1 Ye who own the faith of Jesus sing the wonders that were done, when the love of God the Father o'er our sin the vict'ry won, when he made the Virgin Mary mother of his only Son. Refrain: Hail, Mary, full of grace. 2 Blessèd were the chosen people out of whom the Lord did come, blessèd was the land of promise fashioned for his earthly home; but more blessèd was the mother. she who bare him in her womb. [Refrain] 3 Wherefore let all faithful people tell the honour of her name, let the Church in her foreshadowed part in her thanksgiving claim; what Christ's Mother sang in gladness let Christ's people sing the same.[Refrain] 4 Let us weave our supplications, she with us and we with her, for advancement of the faithful, for each faithful worshipper, for the doubting, for the sinful, for each heedless wanderer. Hail Mary, hail Mary, hail Mary, full of grace. 5 May the mother's intercessions on our homes a blessing win, that the children all be prospered, strong and fair and pure within, following our Lord's own footsteps, firm in faith and free from sin.[Refrain] 6 For the sick and for the agèd, for our dear ones far away, for the hearts that mourn in secret, all who need our prayers today, for the faithful gone before us, may the holy Virgin pray.[Refrain] 7 Praise, O Mary, praise the Father, praise the Saviour and thy Son, praise the everlasting Spirit, who hath made thee ark and throne; o'er all creatures high exalted, lowly praise the Three in One. [Refrain] Scripture: Luke 1:26-38 Used With Tune: DEN DES VATERS SINN GEBOREN
