Lessons from the Past

Appears in 11 hymnals Topics: Backsliding First Line: My people, give ear, attend to my word Lyrics: 1 My people, give ear, attend to my word, In parables new deep truths shall be heard; The wonderful story our fathers made known To children succeeding by us must be shown. 2 Instructing our sons we gladly record The praises, the works, the might of the Lord, For He hath commanded that what He hath done Be passed in tradition from father to son. 3 Let children thus learn from history's light To hope in our God and walk in His sight, The God of their fathers to fear and obey, And ne'er like their fathers to turn from His way. 4 The story be told, to warn and restrain, Of hearts that were hard, rebellions, and vain, Of soldiers who faltered when battle was near, Who kept not God's covenant nor walked in His fear. 5 God's wonderful works to them He had shown, His marvelous deeds their fathers had known; He made for their pathway the waters divide, His glorious pillar of cloud was their guide. 6 He gave them to drink, relieving their thirst, And forth from the rock caused water to burst; Yet faithless they tempted their God, and they said, Can He Who gave water supply us with bread? 7 Jehovah was wroth because they forgot To hope in their God, and trusted Him not; Yet gracious, He opened the doors of the sky And rained down the manna in richest supply. 8 With bread from on high their need He supplied, And more did He do when thankless they sighed; The strong winds commanding from south and from east, He sent them abundance of quail for their feast. 9 Though well they were filled, their folly they chose, Till God in His wrath o'erwhelmed them with woes; He slew of their strongest and smote their young men, But still unbelieving they sinned even then. 10 Because of their sin He smote with His rod, And then they returned and sought for their God; Their Rock and Redeemer was God the Most High, Yet false were their praises, their promise a lie. 11 Not right with their God in heart and in will, They faithlessly broke His covenant still; But He, in compassion, reluctant to slay, Forgave them and oft turned His anger away. 12 His pity was great, though often they sinned, For they were but flesh, a swift passing wind; Yet thought His compassion and grace they behold, They tempted and grieved Him and often rebelled. 13 They limited God, the Most Holy One, And hindered the work His grace had begun; The hand that was mighty to save they forgot, The day of redemption remembering not. 14 Ungrateful and blind, no longer they thought Of wonders and signs and mighty deeds wrought, Of how all the rivers of Egypt ran red, And plagues in God's anger were heaped on their head. 15 They thought not of how, their freedom to gain, In Egypt's abodes the first-born were slain, And how all God's people were led forth like sheep, The flock He delighted in safety to keep. Scripture: Psalm 78 Used With Tune: CHIOS

Thou Man of griefs, remember me

Appears in 72 hymnals Topics: Convinced of Backsliding Lyrics: 1 Thou Man of griefs, remember me, Who never canst thyself forget! Thy last, mysterious agony, Thy fainting pangs, and bloody sweat! 2 When wrestling in the strength of pray'r, Thy spirit sunk beneath its load; Thy feebled flesh abhorr'd to bear The wrath of an almighty God. 3 Father, if I may call thee so, Regard my fearful heart's desire! Remove this load of guilty woe, Nor let me in my sins expire! 4 I tremble, lest the wrath divine, Which bruises now my wretched soul, Should bruise this wretched soul of mine, Long as eternal ages roll. 5 To thee my last distress I bring! The heighten'd fear of death I find; The tyrant, brandishing his sting, Appears, and hell is close behind. 6 I deprecate that death alone, That endless banishment from thee: O save, and give me to thy Son, Who trembl'd, wept, and bled for me.

A hard heart

Author: Horatius Bonar Appears in 23 hymnals Topics: Backsliding; Backsliding First Line: Oh, this soul, how dark and blind! Lyrics: 1 Oh, this soul, how dark and blind! Oh, this foolish, earthly mind! Oh, this froward, selfish will, Which refuses to be still! Oh, these ever-roaming eyes, Upward that refuse to rise! Oh, these wayward feet of mine, Found in every path but thine! 2 Oh, this stubborn, prayerless knee, Hands so seldom clasped to thee, Longings of the soul, that go Like the wild wind, to and fro! To and fro, without an aim, Turning idly whence they came, Bringing in no joy, no bliss, Only adding weariness! 3 Giver of the heavenly peace! Bid, oh, bid these tumults cease; Ministry thy holy balm; Fill me with thy Spirit's calm: Thou, the Life, the Truth, and Way, Leave me not in sin to stay; Bearer of the sinner's guilt, Lead me, lead me, as thou wilt.

Stay, Thou insulted Spirit! stay

Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 397 hymnals Topics: Man a Saint Lukewarm and Backsliding Lyrics: 1 Stay, Thou insulted Spirit! stay, Though I have done Thee such despite; Nor cast the sinner quite away, Nor take Thine everlasting flight. 2 Though I have steeled my stubborn heart, And oft shaken off my guilty fears; And vexed and urged Thee to depart, For many long rebellious years,-- 3 Though I have most unfaithful been Of all who e'er Thy grace received, Ten thousand times Thy goodness seen, Ten thousand times Thy goodness grieved. 4 Yet oh! the chief of sinners spare In honor of my great High-Priest: Nor in Thy righteous anger swear T'exclude me from Thy people's rest. 5 This only woe I deprecate, This only plague I pray remove, Nor leave me in my lost estate, Nor curse me with this want of love. 6 E'en now my weary soul release, Upraise me with Thy gracious hand, And guide into Thy perfect peace, And bring me to the promised land.

Emancipation from Spiritual Slavery

Meter: 7.7.7.7 Appears in 5 hymnals Topics: Backsliding First Line: Rebels, who had dared to show Lyrics: 1 Rebels, who had dared to show Proud contempt of God Most High, Bound in iron and in woe, Shades of death and darkness night, Humbled low with toil and pain, Fell, and looked for help in vain. 2 To Jehovah then they cried In their trouble, and He saved, Threw the prison open wide Where they lay to death enslaved, Bade the gloomy shadows flee, Broke their bonds and set them free. 3 Sons of men, awake to praise God the Lord Who reigns above, Gracious in His works and ways, Wondrous in redeeming love; Iron bars He breaks like clay, And the brazen gates give way. Scripture: Psalm 107 Used With Tune: DIX

Sin and Divine Patience

Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 3 hymnals Topics: Backsliding First Line: Their God and Saviour they forgot Lyrics: 1 Their God and Saviour they forgot, Their helper and their stay, But Moses plead the promised grace And turned God's wrath away. 2 Yea, they despised the pleasant land, The promised land of God, And tempted Him to make them fall And scatter them abroad. 3 They sacrificed to heathen gods, And God their sin repaid; Then holy wrath avenged the wrong, And so the plague was stayed. 4 The Lord approved the righteous act Of him who sin abhorred, And honored him for evermore With just and great reward. 5 By wicked strife they angered God, His wrath they did provoke; And, stirred by their rebellious cries, Their leader rashly spoke. 6 Ensnared, they served the heathen gods, And by them were beguiled; The blood of children sacrificed The very land defiled. 7 Against His own inheritance Jehovah's wrath arose, His chosen people He condemned To serve their heathen foes. 8 Though from their harsh oppressors' hand Ofttimes He set them free, Rebellious still, they were brought low In their iniquity. 9 When unto God they cried, he heard And turned again His face, In boundless love remembering The covenant of His grace. 10 He even touched their captors' hearts, And made their very foes Compassionate and pitiful To feel his people's woes. 11 Save us, O Lord, our gracious God, From alien lands reclaim That we may triumph in Thy praise And bless Thy holy Name. 12 Blessed be the Lord our covenant God, All praise to Him accord; Let all the people say, Amen. Praise ye, praise ye the Lord. Scripture: Psalm 106 Used With Tune: NOTTINGHAM

Ah, where am I now!

Appears in 25 hymnals Topics: Backslider Lyrics: 1 Ah, where am I now! When was it, or how That I fell from my heaven of grace? I am brought into thrall, I am stript of my All, I am banish'd from Jesus's face. 2 Hardly yet do I know How I let my Lord go, So insensibly starting aside: When the tempter came in With his own subtle sin, And infected my spirit with pride. 3 But I felt it too soon, That my Saviour was gone, Swiftly vanishing out of my sight; My triumph and boast On a sudden were lost, And my day it was turn'd into night. 4 Only pride could destroy That innocent joy, And make my Redeemer depart; But whate'er was the cause, I lament the sad loss, For the veil is come over my heart. 5 Ah! wretch that I am! I can only exclaim, Like a devil tormented within: My Saviour is gone, And has left me alone To the fury of Satan and sin. 6 Nothing now can relieve, Without comfort I grieve, I have lost all my peace and my pow'r; No access do I find To the friend of mankind; I can ask for his mercy no more. 7 Tongue cannot declare The torment I bear, (While no end of my troubles I see) Only Adam could tell On the day that he fell, And was turn'd out of Eden, like me. 8 Driven out from my God, I wander abroad, Thro' a desert of sorrows I rove; And how great is my pain, That I cannot regain My Eden of Jesus' love! 9 I never shall rise To my first paradise, Or come my Redeemer to see: But I feel a faint hope That at last he will stoop, And his pity shall bring him to me.

How happy are they

Appears in 707 hymnals Topics: Backslider Lyrics: Part the First. 1 How happy are they, Who the Saviuor obey, And have laid up their treasure above! Tongue cannot express The sweet comfort and peace Of a soul in its earliest love! 2 That comfort was mine, When the favour divine I first found in the blood of the Lamb; When my heart it believ'd, O what joy I receiv'd, What a heaven in Jesus's name! 3 'Twas a heaven below The Saviour to know; And the angels could do nothing more Than to fall at his feet, And the story repeat, And the Lover of sinners adore. 4 Jesus all the day long Was my joy and my song; O that all his salvation might see! He hath loved me, I cried, He hath suffer'd, and died, To redeem such a rebel as me. 5 On the wings of his love I was carry'd above All sin, and temptation, and pain; I could not believe That I ever should grieve, That I ever should suffer again. 6 I rode on the sky, Freely justify'd I! Nor envy'd Elijah his seat: My soul mounted higher In a chariot of fire, And the moon it was under my feet. 7 Oh! the rapturous height Of that holy delight Which I felt in the life-giving blood! Of my Saviour possest, I was perfectly blest, As if fill'd with the fulness of God.

For the Morning

Appears in 24 hymnals Topics: Backslider First Line: Where is my God, my joy, my hope Lyrics: 1 Where is my God, my joy, my hope, The dear desire of nations, where? Jesus to thee my soul looks up, To thee directs her morning-prayer; And spreads her arms of faith abroad, T' embrace my hope, my joy, my God! 2 Mine eyes prevent the morning-ray, Looking, and longing for thy word; Com, O my Jesus, come away, And let my heart receive its Lord; Which pants and struggles to be free, And breaks to be detain'd from thee. 3 Appear in me bright Morning-Star, And scatter all the shades of night! I saw thee once, and came from far, But quickly lost thy transient light; And now again in darkness pine, Till thou throughout my nature shine. 4 In patient hope I now take heed To the sure word of promis'd grace, Whose rays a feeble lustre shed, Faint, glimmering thro' the darksome place; Till thou thy glorious light impart, And rise, the Day-Star in my heart. 5 Come, Lord, be manifested here, And all the devil's works destroy; Now without sin in me appear, And fill with everlasting joy: Thy beatific face display, Thy presence is the perfect day.
