1833 - 1918 Person Name: Henry Montagu Butler (1833-1918) Topics: Children and All-Age Worship Author of "'Lift up your hearts!' We lift them, Lord, to thee" in Ancient and Modern Butler, Henry Montagu, D.D., was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, and graduated B.A. as Senior Classic in 1855, and became a Fellow of his college in 1855. Taking Holy Orders in 1859, he became Head Master of Harrow School in 1859. This position he held until 1885, when he was preferred to the Deanery of Gloucester. He held the deanery for a short time only, and became Master of Trinity College, Cambridge, on the death of Dr. W. H. Thompson in 1886. Dr. Butler has also held the important appointments of Hon. Chaplain to the Queen; Examining Chaplain to Archbishops Tait and Benson; Select Preacher at Oxford, 1882; and Preb. of Holborn in St. Paul's Cathedral. Dr. Butler edited the 3rd edition of Hymns for the Chapel of Harrow School, 1865, and the 4th edition, 1881. To the Harrow Hymn Book Dr. Butler contributed:— 1. Art thou the Healer that should come. St. John Baptist. 2. Ask and ye surely shall receive. Prayer. Last St. by J. Montgomery. 3. Jesus died for us and rose again. Death and Burial. 4. Lovest thou Me ? the risen Saviour cried. St. Peter. 5. 0 merciful and holy. Founder's Day. 6. Rejoice today with one accord. Founder's Day. 7. The night of agony hath passed. Good Friday. 8. Where shall we find our mightiest saint? St. Paul. Of these Nos. 2 and 3 were given in the 3rd edition of the Harrow Hymn Book, 1865, and the rest were added in 1881. Nos. 3, 5, 6 and 8 are also in Hymns for the Use of Sherborne School, 1888, Nos. 5 and 6 being much altered. Marty Nystrom

Nystrom, a songwriter, was born in 1956 in Seattle, Washington, to a mother who grew up in the Christian Reformed Church; his father was brought up in the Evangelical Covenant Church. After graduating from Oral Roberts University with a degree in music education, Nystrom worked as a music director for the New York branch of Christ for the Nations. More recently he has served as a song development manager for Integrity Music, for whom he has written more than seventy songs. Henry Smith

b. 1952 Person Name: Henry Smith (b. 1952) Topics: Children and All-Age Worship Author of "Give thanks with a grateful heart" in Ancient and Modern Henry Smith must have seen life this way: God’s side of the equation outweighs whatever is on the opposite side. At least, that’s what the words he wrote indicate. God is the ‘all’ of existence, so that I am called to ‘give thanks’ six times in the song’s opening words. When I’m done here on planet Earth, all that will matter is what lies ahead – in God’s presence. That must have been alluring for Henry Smith, who was struggling to find steady work, despite having just earned his college degree. When he says ‘the poor’ are rich in “Give Thanks”, that’s an echo from his difficulty in finding work. His eyesight was also failing because of a degenerative condition that would eventually leave him legally blind, certainly a ‘weakness’ that he expressed in the song as his eyesight faded. Thankfully, theological training informed him that God’s side of the equals sign was what mattered. And other parts of his life further motivated the song that leapt from his heart. He’d found someone to love, his future wife. And, he was grateful to be through school, which his deteriorating vision had made difficult, and to be back home in a church he loved in Williamsburg, Virginia. If God was all Henry Smith had in 1978, He could be praised, and yet He provided even more. It’s no surprise that Smith’s heart overflowed in a song. Marty Haugen

b. 1950 Person Name: Marty Haugen (b. 1950) Topics: Children and All-Age Worship Author of "Here in this place new light is streaming" in Ancient and Modern Marty Haugen (b. 1950), is a prolific liturgical composer with many songs included in hymnals across the liturgical spectrum of North American hymnals and beyond, with many songs translated into different languages. He was raised in the American Lutheran Church, received a BA in psychology from Luther College, yet found his first position as a church musician in a Roman Catholic parish at a time when the Roman Catholic Church was undergoing profound liturgical and musical changes after Vatican II. Finding a vocation in that parish to provide accessible songs for worship, he continued to compose and to study, receiving an MA in pastoral studies at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul Minnesota. A number of liturgical settings were prepared for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and more than 400 of his compositions are available from several publishers, especially GIA Publications, who also produced some 30 recordings of his songs. He is composer-in-residence at Mayflower Community Congregational Church in Minneapolis and continues to compose and travel to speak and teach at worship events around the world. Emily Brink

Charitie Lees Smith

Sidney Smith, D.D., Rector of Drumragh, County Tyrone, Ireland; was born at Bloomfield, Merrion, in the county of Dublin, June 21,1841; and married, in 1869, to Arthur E. Bancroft. Her hymns have appeared in periodicals, Lyra Britannica, Bishop Ryle's Spiritual Songs, and other collections, and also as leaflets. The following have come into common usage:— 1. O for the [a] robes [robe] of whiteness. Heaven desired. This favorite children's hymn was 1st pub. as a leaflet in 1860. In 1867 it was included in Lyra Britannica, and thence has passed into several collections in Great Britain and America. 2. The King of glory standeth. Christ the Saviour. Contributed in 7 stanzas of 8 1ines to the Lyra Britannica, 1867, and entitled "Mighty to save." In the Hymns & Songs of Praise, N. Y., 1874, No. 1196, it begins with stanza iii., "He comes in bloodstained garments." 3. Before the throne of God above. The Advocate. Dated 1863, and given in Spurgeon's Our Own Hymn Book, 1806, Laudes Domini, N. Y., 1884. In 1867 Mrs. Bancroft's hymns were collected and published as Within the Veil, by C. L.
