The Church of Christ

Author: Augustus Gottlieb Spangenberg; Catherine Winkworth Appears in 9 hymnals Topics: Church--Foundation and nature First Line: The church of Christ, which he has hallowed here Lyrics: 1 The church of Christ, which he has hallowed here to be his house, is scattered far and near in north, and south, and east, and west abroad; and yet in earth and heav'n, thro' Christ, her Lord, the church is one. 2 One member may not know another here, and yet their fellowship is true and near; one is their Savior, and their Father one; one Spirit rules them, and among them none lives to one's self. 3 They live to him who bought them with his blood, baptized them with his Spirit, pure and good; and in true faith and ever burning love, their hearts and hopes ascend to seek above th'eternal good. 4 O Spirt of the Lord, all life is yours; now on your church your pow'r and strength out-pour, that many children may be born to you and through your knowledge may be brought anew to sing Christ's praise. Scripture: Romans 12 Used With Tune: FIDEI UNITAS

Come, Let Us All with Gladness Raise

Author: Matthew of Kunwald; Gabriel Komarovsky; Michael Weisse; Evelyn Renatus Hasse Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 2 hymnals Topics: Church--Foundation and nature Lyrics: 1 Come, let us all with gladness raise a joyous song of thanks and praise to God who rules the heav'nly host, God, Father, Son and Holy Ghost. 2 For God, in grace and tenderness, regarded us in our distress; yea, to our aid himself he came; let all adore God's holy name. 3 God gave us faithful ones to lead and help us in our time of need; but, Lord, all pow'r is yours alone, and you the work must carry on. 4 Father in heaven, fulfill your word; grant us the Spirit of our Lord, that through your truth, which cannot fail, we may o’er ev'ry ill prevail. 5 And in your love may we abide, estranged from none by wrath or pride, among ourselves at unity and with all else in charity. 6 Thus may our lips your praises sound, our hearts in steadfast hope abound; till you to heaven our steps shall bring where saints and angels hail you King. Scripture: Psalm 84:4-5 Used With Tune: FREUEN WIR UNS

The Church

Appears in 51 hymnals Topics: God's Church Foundation First Line: Within the whole family of God on earth Lyrics: Within the whole family of God on earth, the church appears wherever believers in Jesus the Christ are gathered in his name. Transcending all barriers within the human family, the one church manifests itself in ordered communities bound together for worship, fellowship, and service; in varied structures for mission, witness, and mutual accountability; and for the nurture and renewal of its members. The nature of the church, given by Christ, remains constant through the generations, yet in faithfulness to its nature, it continues to discern God’s vision and to adapt its mission and structures to the needs of a changing world. All dominion in the church belongs to Jesus, its Lord and head, and any exercise of authority in the church on earth stands under his judgment. With songs of sacred joy

Author: Doddridge Appears in 4 hymnals Topics: The Church Her Foundation and Nature Lyrics: 1 With songs of sacred joy Extol His glorious Name, Who reared the spacious earth, And raised our ruined frame. He built the Church who spread the sky; Sing and exalt His honors high. 2 See the Foundation laid By Power and Love divine; Jesus, His first-born Son, How bright His glories shine! Low He descends, in dust He lies, That from His tomb a Church might rise. 3 But He for ever lives, Nor for Himself alone: Each saint new life derives From Him the living Stone. His influence spreads through every soul, And in one house unites the whole. 4 To Him with joy we move; In Him cemented stand; The living temple grows, And owns the Founder's hand. That Structure, Lord, still higher raise, Louder to sound its Builder's praise. Used With Tune: ST. PETER'S, MANCHESTER

Christ alone is our salvation

Author: Anon. Appears in 6 hymnals Topics: The Church Foundation and Nature; The Church Foundation and Nature Lyrics: 1 Christ alone is our salvation, Christ the rock on which we stand; Other than this sure foundation Will be found but sinking sand. Christ, His cross and resurrection, Is alone the sinners' plea; At the throne of God's perfection Nothing else can set him free. 2 We have all things, Christ possessing: Life eternal, second birth; Present pardon, peace, and blessing, While we tarry here on earth; And by faith's anticipation, Foretaste of the joy above, Freely given us with salvation, By the Father in His love. 3 When we perfect joy shall enter, 'Tis in Him our bless will rise; He's the essence, soul, and center Of the glory in the skies: In redemption's wondrous story Planned before our parents' fall, From the cross unto the glory, Jesus Christ is all in all. Used With Tune: [Christ alone is our salvation]
