It Came upon a Midnight Clear

Author: Edmund H. Sears Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 898 hymnals Topics: Reign of Christ Lyrics: 1 It came upon a midnight clear, that glorious song of old, from angels bending near the earth to touch their harps of gold: “Peace on the earth, good will to all from heaven’s gracious King.” The world in solemn stillness lay, to hear the angels sing. 2 Still through the cloven skies they come, with peaceful wings unfurled, and still their heav’nly music floats o’er all the weary world. Above its sad and lowly plains they bend on hov’ring wing, and ever o’er its Babel sounds the blessed angels sing. 3 Yet with the woes of sin and strife, the world has suffered long; beneath the heav’nly hymn have rolled two thousand years of wrong, and warring humankind hears not the tidings which they bring. O hush the noise and cease your strife and hear the angels sing. 4 And you, beneath life's crushing load, whose forms are bending low, who toil along the climbing way with painful steps and slow: Look now! for glad and golden hours come swiftly on the wing. O rest beside the weary road, and hear the angels sing. 5 For lo, the days are hast’ning on, by prophet bards foretold, when with the ever-circling years comes round the age of gold, when peace shall over all the earth its ancient splendors fling, and all the world sends back the song which now the angels sing. Scripture: Luke 2:8-20 Used With Tune: CAROL Text Sources: Christian Register, 1849, alt.

See, the Conqueror Mounts in Triumph

Author: Christopher Wordsworth Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Appears in 202 hymnals Topics: Ascension & Reign of Christ; Ascension & Reign of Christ Lyrics: 1 See, the Conqueror mounts in triumph; see the King in royal state, riding on the clouds, his chariot, to his heavenly palace gate. Hark! the choirs of angel voices joyful alleluias sing, and the gates on high are opened to receive their heavenly King. 2 He who on the cross did suffer, he who from the grave arose, he has vanquished sin and Satan, he by death has spoiled his foes. While he lifts his hands in blessing, he is parted from his friends. While their eager eyes behold him, in the cloud the Lord ascends. 3 You have raised our human nature on the clouds to God's right hand; there we sit in heavenly places, there with you in glory stand. Jesus reigns, adored by angels; man with God is on the throne! Mighty Lord, in your ascension we by faith can see our own. Scripture: Psalm 24:7-10 Used With Tune: REX GLORIAE

O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing

Author: Charles Wesley Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 1,768 hymnals Topics: Reign of Christ Year C Lyrics: 1 O for a thousand tongues to sing my great Redeemer's praise, the glories of my God and king, the triumphs of God's grace. 2 Jesus! the name that charms our fears, that bids our sorrows cease; 'tis music in the sinner's ears, 'tis life and health and peace. 3 He speaks, and listening to his voice, new life the dead receive, the mournful broken hearts rejoice, the humble poor believe. 4 Hear him, you deaf, you voiceless ones, your tongues again employ; you blind, behold your Saviour comes, and leap, you lame, for joy! 5 My gracious Master and my God, assist me to proclaim, to spread through all the earth abroad the honours of your name. Used With Tune: AZMON
