George Hugh Bourne

1840 - 1925 Person Name: G. Bourne (1840-1925) Topics: The Promise of Redemption Moses Author of "Lord, enthroned in heavenly splendour" in Hymns for Today's Church (2nd ed.) Bourne, George Hugh, D.C.L., son of Rev. R. B. Bourne, born at St. Paul's Cray, Kent, 8th Nov. 1840, and educated at Eton, and O. C. C, Oxford, graduating B.A., 1863; B.C.L., 1866; and D.C.L. 1871. Taking Holy Orders in 1863, he became Curate of Sandford-on-Thames, 1863. He was afterwards Head Master of Chardstock College, and is now (1886) Warden of the same school, which has been transferred to St. Edmund's, Salisbury. Dr. Bourne has written the following hymns:— 1. Scarce discerning aught before us. General, Written in Switzerland in 1861, and published in Lyra Messianica, 1864, p. 17, in 10 stanzas of 4 lines, and repeated in the Appendix to the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge Psalms & Hymns, 1869, in an abbreviated form. 2. 0 Christ, the king of human life. Holy Matrimony. A hymn on Holy Matrimony, written in 1867 for the marriage of Dr. A. B. Webb, Bishop of Bloemfontein, and included in the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge Appendix to the Psalms & Hymns, 1869, and thence into Church Hymns, 1871. 3. Of the wondrous Body, 0 my tongue be telling. A translation of "Pange lingua gloriosi corporis," q.v., contributed to Lyra Eucharistica, 2nd edition, 1864. Dr. Bourne has also written seven Post-Communion hymns for use in the Chapel of St. Edmund's College, Salisbury. Jakob Hintze

1622 - 1702 Topics: God's Promise of Redemption Composer of "SALZBURG" in Psalms for All Seasons Partly as a result of the Thirty Years' War and partly to further his musical education, Jakob Hintze (b. Bernau, Germany, 1622; d. Berlin, Germany, 1702) traveled widely as a youth, including trips to Sweden and Lithuania. In 1659 he settled in Berlin, where he served as court musician to the Elector of Brandenburg from 1666 to 1695. Hintze is known mainly for his editing of the later editions of Johann Crüger's Praxis Pietatis Melica, to which he contributed some sixty-five of his original tunes. Bert Polman

John Antes

1740 - 1811 Topics: God's Promise of Redemption Adapter of "MONKLAND" in Psalms for All Seasons John Antes (b. Frederick, PA, 1740; d. Bristol, England, 1811) was a missionary, watchmaker, business manager, and composer. Born near the Moravian community of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, he was trained at the Moravian boys' school and later received religious education and further training as a watchmaker in Herrnhut, Germany. From 1770 to 1781 he served as a missionary in Egypt and from 1783 until his death was the business manager of the Moravian community in Fullneck, England. Although music was his avocation, Antes was a fine composer and musician. Among his compositions are a number of anthems, several string trios, and over fifty hymn tunes. Bert Polman

Edward Husband

1843 - 1908 Topics: God's Promise of Redemption Adapter of "ST. EDITH" in Psalms for All Seasons Husband, Edward was educated at St. Aidan's College, Birkenhead. Taking Holy Orders in 1866, he was successively Curate of Atherstone and Folkestone; and in 1878 Vicar of St. Michael and All Angels, Folkestone. In 1874 Mr. Husband published The Mission Hymnal, in which appeared his hymns as follows:— 1. Alas! poor world, I loved thee long. Rest in Jesus. 2. And dost Thou ask me, dearest Lord. Christ's Invitation, " Follow Me." 3. I must have Jesus only. Jesus only desired 4. Sweet Blood, dear ransom of our souls. The Blood of Jesus. Eelco Vos

Topics: God's Promise of Redemption Arranger of "GENEVAN 136 (adapt.)" in Psalms for All Seasons Eelco Vos (b. 1972) is a Dutch composer and pianist. He studied at the Conservatory of Music in Utrecht and obtained degrees in music education and classical piano. He studied under master pianist Alwin Bӓr, and took master classes from Ivan Moravec and Ferenc Rados. For several years Vos played with an acoustic band, and many of his songs were aired on the radio. Growing up, Vos had sung Genevan Psalms at home, church, and school. To revitalize psalm singing among current Dutch youth who no longer knew that heritage, he founded and directs The Psalm Project (www.thepsalmproject.com), a group of professional Dutch musicians devoted to performing fresh and contemporary settings of the psalms, based on tunes from the 16th century Genevan Psalter; Elco Vos is the primary composer and arranger and plays keyboard with the group. They regularly tour the Netherlands, and for their first North American tour in 2012, they partnered with the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship in releasing Psalms Unplugged, their first English-language CD. He was 47 years old and lived in Manhattan. He died of spinal cancer, said his brother, Juan Francisco. Mr. Chavez-Melo was born in Mexico City, but completed his musical studies in the United States, receiving degrees at Eastern Nazarene College and the Union Theological Seminary, and pursuing further studies at the Juilliard School and the Manhattan School. He toured internationally as an organist and conducted orchestras in Mexico, Brazil and the United States. As a composer, he wrote works for organ, choir and orchestra, and contributed hymn settings to several published hymnals, including those of the United Church of Christ and Yale University. He also lectured and presented workshops on Hispanic church music. Besides directing music at St. Rose, Mr. Chavez-Melo conducted the annual Singing Christmas Tree concerts at the South Street Seaport. http://www.nytimes.com/1992/01/28
