Dennis Allen

1800 - 1874 Author of "Earth, with All Thy Thousand Voices" in The Cyber Hymnal Churton, Edward, D.D., son of the Ven. Ralph Churton, sometime Archdeacon of St. David's and Hector of Middleton Cheney, Northampton, was born in 1800, and educated at the Charterhouse and Christ Church, Oxford, where he graduated in honours, in 1821. He was for some time one of the Masters at Charterhouse. He took Holy Orders in 1826; was the first Head Master of the Hackney Church of England School, 1830; Rector of Crayke, 1835; Prebendary in York Cathedral, 1841; and Archdeacon of Cleveland, 1846. He died July 4, 1874. Archdeacon Churton's works include: (1) The Early English Church, 1840. (2) Memoir of Bishop Pearson, 1844. (3) Lays of Faith and Royalty, 18-15. (4) Memoir of Joshua Watson, 1861. He also edited several works, including Lays of Faith and Royalty, 1845, &c. He is known to hymnology through his work, The Book of Psalms in English Verse, 1854. This is commonly known as the Cleveland Psalter. The Preface is of more than usual interest and value. Of his renderings of the Psalms, some of which are of great excellence a few have come into common use, the best known being, “God of grace, O let Thy light." The following, mainly in Kennedy, 1863, are from the Cleveland Psalter:— 1. Come, arise and let us go. Ps. cxxxii. 2. Earth with all thy thousand voices. Ps. lxvi. 3. Ferdinand Q. Blanchard

1876 - 1968 Author of "Word of God, Across the Ages" in Ten New Hymns on the Bible Blanchard was born on July 12 in Jersey City, NJ. He attended Amherst College (AB 1898) and Yale Divinity School (BD 1901). He was ordained as a Congregational minister and pastored churches in Southington, Connecticut (1901-04); East Orange, New Jersey (1904-15); and at the Euclid Avenue Congregational Church, Cleveland, Ohio, from 1915 until retirement. 1841 - 1931 Person Name: Rev. Emanuel Cronenwett, D. D., 1880 Author of "Heav'nly Father, Jesus taught us" in Evangelical Lutheran hymnal Cronenwett, Emmanuel, a Lutheran Pastor at Butler, Pennsylvania, U.S.A., contributed to the Evangelical Lutheran Hymnal, Published by Order of the Evangelical Lutheran Joint Synod of Ohio and other States, 1880, in addition to 20 translations from the German, the following original hymns, some of which rank with the best in the collection:— 1. Miriam Drury

1900 - 1985 Author of "Christ Triumphant" in Hymns for Junior Worship Miriam Drury (1900-1985) was a native of California and lived there most of her life. Her husband was a faculty member at San Francisco Theological Seminary. After retirement, she lived in Monte Vista Presbyterian Retirement Home, Pasadena, California. Her hymn "Walk Tall, Christian" was also included in The Worshipbook (1970). Drury composed many complete hymns (words and music), anthems, and poems for both children and adults. She was an award-winning composer for the Hymn Society of America and a number of her hymns were published by the society. The Presbyterian Hymnal Companion 1993 ============================= Miriam Drury (Mrs. Clifford Merrill Drury) is a native of California where she has lived most of her life. Her home is in Pasedena. She has long been interest in writing stories, poems and songs for children as well as articles for adults. Thomas Levi

1825 - 1916 Person Name: Parch. Thomas Levi Author of "Dyma Feibl anwyl Iesu (O how blest the hour, Lord Jesus)" in Cân a Mawl LEVI,THOMAS (1825-1916), Calvinistic Methodist minister, editor of Trysorfa y Plant, and author; born 12 Oct. 1825 at Penrhos near Ystradgynlais, son of John and Prudence Levi. He received his early education at a school kept by an old soldier at Ystradgynlais, and later, while still a boy, worked at Ynyscedwyn iron works. About 1846 he began to preach at Cwmgïedd chapel, Ystradgynlais. He was minister of Capel yr Ynys, Ystradgynlais, about 1855-60, of Philadelphia, Morriston, 1860-76, and of Tabernacle, Aberystwyth, 1876-1901. He married (1), Elizabeth Daniel of Cwmgïedd (d. 1871), and (2), 1873, Margaret, youngest daughter of Hugh and Catherine Jones of Coedmadoc, Tal-y-sarn, Caerns. He began his literary labours in 1853 and wrote thirty books. Today, the best known are: Hanes Prydain Fawr, 1862; Bywyd a Theithiau Livingstone, 1857; Gweddiau Teuluaidd, 1863; Hanesion y Beibl, 1870; Casgliad o Hen Farwnadau, 1872; Hanes y Beibl Cymraeg, 1876; Traethodau Bywgraffyddol, 1882 and after, published in a single volume entitled Cedyrn Cymru; Canmlwyddiant yr Ysgol Sabbothol, 1885. He also translated sixty books from English into Welsh, including Yr Anianydd Cristionogol1859; Crist a Gwroniaid y Byd Paganaidd, 1887. He co-operated with Dr. Joseph Parry in the production of ‘Cantata yr Adar,’ 1873; ‘Cantata Joseph,’ 1885; Hymnau a Thonau yr Ysgol Sabbothol, 1887, etc. But his chief literary achievement was the starting of Trysorfa y Plant, and its regular production every month for half a century- 1862-1911. Although this periodical was produced under the patronage of the Calvinistic Methodists, it was popular with every denomination. The circulation of Trysorfa y Plant, which ultimately reached 44,000 a month, was greater than had ever been known in Wales before. Its income was so great that it paid the entire cost of production of Y Drysorfa and Y Traethodydd. It was read by Welshmen all over the world and in it were published some of the earliest poems of Islwyn, Ceiriog, and others. Levi was moderator of the C.M. General Assembly in 1883 and of the South Wales Association in 1887. He played a prominent part in the setting up of monuments to Daniel Rowland, Thomas Charles, Williams of Pantycelyn, and bishop Morgan. He continued to preach until 1910 and to edit Trysorfa y Plant until 1911. He was nearly 91 when he d. 16 June 1916. Dosia Carlson

b. 1930 Author of "God of Eagles, God of Sparrows" in New Hymns for America Dosia Carlson (b.1930) is an inspiration to differently abled people. A bout with polio shattered her dream of being a missionary in China. After studying at Oberlin College she went on to seminary, was ordained, earned a doctorate at the University of Pittsburgh and served on the faculty of The Defiance College. She is founder of DUET, formerly Center DOAR (Developing Older Adult Resources) She lived at the Beatitudes Campus Lifestyle Community in Phoenix, AZ. Among her many awards are Arizona Woman of the Year and the Antoinette Brown Award for outstanding women clergy. She has published two collections of hymns. Her hymn "Egypt Under Pharaoh" is included in The New Century Hymnal (A.Clyde, Cleveland, OH: Pilgrim Press, 1995). Mary Louise VanDyke

Joël Blomqvist

1840 - 1930 Person Name: Joel Blomqvist Author of "Tänk uti din ungdoms dagar" in Lutherförbundets Sångbok Blomqvist, Joël. (Stockholm, Sweden, November 15, 1840--October 30, 1930, Kullarstad, Sweden). Swedish Free Church Movement. Upholsterer by trade, lay preacher and singer. Colporteur for Uppsala City Mission, 1874-1878. Wrote about 400 hymn texts in the pietistic tradition and almost as many tunes. Published several hymn collections including Sabbatsklockan, 1877-1878, and Fridstoner, 1879-1882. Edited musical periodical, Fridsrösten, 1884-1886. His works are representative of the Rosenian revival period. Author of "Heavenly Father, Hear My Supplication," (Helige Fader, böj ditt öra neder), "Heavenly Spirit, Gentle Spirit" (Himladuva, Ande ljuva), "Praise the Lord, All Praise and Blessing" (Loven Herren, ty att lova), and "Sabbath Day of Rest and Cheer" (Sabbatsdag, hur skön du är).
