1899 - 2000 Scripture: Acts 3:19 Author of "When the World Seems Cold (Somewhere to Care)" in African Methodist Episcopal Church Hymnal Jimmie Davis (James Houston Davis) was born in Quitman, Louisiana, one of eleven children born to a sharecroppers. His father saw education as a way out of poverty. Jimmie attended high school in Winfield, business school in New Orleans, Louisiana College in Pineville, and earned a Masters degree from Louisiana State University. He served two terms as governor of Louisiana, from 1944 to 1948 and from 1960-1964. He also wrote the song "You Are My Sunshine," acted in B westerns, and taught history, as well as yodeling, at Dodd College in Shreveport for a year. He then took a job as court clerk in Shreveport, where he remained through most of the 1930's. He also began to write music during the 1930's. He was able to pick out music on his guitar and sang on the radio station KWKH, where a talent scout heard him and launched his career. Davis became public safety commissioner in 1938, public service commissioner in 1942, and launched his campaign for governor in 1944. When asked about his views on contentious issues, he would sing one of his songs. After his first term he concentrated on his music and also purchased 450 acres of farmland near Shreveport. He wrote hundreds of songs, both sacred and secular. In 1959 he decided to run again for governor. At that time the federal government was launching desegregationist initiatives. The segregationists supported William Rainach, but when it became clear that Rainach was not popular in Louisiana, they backed Davis. When asked late in life how he wanted to be remembered, he said "as someone who scattered a little sunshine along his path." Stephen P. Starke

b. 1955 Person Name: Stephen P. Starke, b. 1955 Scripture: Acts 3:14-16 Author of "All the Earth with Joy Is Sounding" in Hymnal Supplement 98 Rev. Stephen P. Starke has always had a heart for hymns. At a young age, Starke played hymns out of The Lutheran Hymnal and read through the hymnal to pass the time before Sunday services. Pastor Starke graduated from Concordia University Chicago with a BA. While completing his MDiv from Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne, Indiana, he attempted his first hymn text and was encouraged to write more. Since that time, he has written more than 175 hymns inspired by music and the Scriptures. He has been commissioned to write hymns for special occasions, including the 125th anniversary of Concordia University Wisconsin, as well as his daughter’s wedding. Because of his extensive work as a hymnwriter, Pastor Starke received an honorary doctor of letters degree from Concordia University, Irvine, California, and an honorary doctor of divinity degree from Concordia University Wisconsin in Mequon. It is through the medium of hymns that Pastor Starke desires to preserve and pass on the truths of the Gospel for generations to come.

John J. Overholt

1918 - 2000 Scripture: Acts 3:15 Author of "Jesus, Lord from Heaven" in The Christian Hymnary. Bks. 1-4 John J. Overholt was born to an Amish family of limited means in the state of Ohio in 1918. As a child he was soon introduced to his father's personal collection of gospel songs and hymns, which was to have a marked influence on his later life. With his twin brother Joe, he early was exposed to the Amish-Mennonite tradition hymn-singing and praising worship. An early career in Christian service led to a two-year period of relief work in the country of Poland following World War II. During that interim he began to gather many European songs and hymns as a personal hobby, not realizing that these selections would become invaluable to The Christian Hymnary which was begun in 1960 and completed twelve years later in 1972, with a compilation of 1000 songs, hymns and chorales. (The largest Menn. hymnal). A second hymnal was begun simultaneously in the German language entitled Erweckungs Lieder Nr.1 which was brought to completion in 1986. This hymnal has a total of 200 selections with a small addendum of English hymns. Mr. Overholt married in 1965 to an accomplished soprano Vera Marie Sommers, who was not to be outdone by her husband's creativity and compiled a hymnal of 156 selections entitled Be Glad and Sing, directed to children and youth and first printed in 1986. During this later career of hymn publishing, Mr. Overholt also found time for Gospel team work throughout Europe. At this writing he is preparing for a 5th consecutive tour which he arranges and guides. The countries visited will be Belgium, Switzerland, France, Germany, Poland, USSR and Romania. Mr. Overholt was called to the Christian ministry in 1957 and resides at Sarasota, Florida where he is co-minister of a Beachy Amish-Mennonite Church. Died: August 8, 1935, Abington, Connecticut. Buried: North Swansea, Rhode Island. The 1900 census shows Ingler as a "vocalist" living in Denver, Colorado. The 1920 census shows him as a Nazarene preacher in Tillamook, Oregon. After the death of his wife Amalia, he moved east and married Lura Horton, who at the time was pastor of the People’s Church of the Nazarene in Providence, Rhode Island. The two of them served joint pastorates in Fitchburg, Massachusetts; Jackman, Maine; North Attleboro, Massachusetts; New Haven, Connecticut; and, in 1931, at Emmanuel Church, Pawtucket, Rhode Island.
