Behold a host, arrayed in white

Author: H. A. Brorson Appears in 23 hymnals Topics: The Church Year All Saints Day; The Church Year All Saints Day Lyrics: 1 Behold a host, arrayed in white, Like thousand snow-clad mountains bright, With palms they stand--Who are this band Before the throne of light? Lo, these are they, of glorious fame, Who from the great affliction came And in the flood of Jesus' blood Are cleansed from guilt and blame; Now gathered in the holy place Their voices they in worship raise, Their anthems swell where God doth dwell, 'Mid angels' songs of praise. 2 Despised and scorned they sojourned here, But now, how glorious they appear! Those martyrs stand, a priestly band, God's throne forever near. So oft, in troubled days gone by, In anguish they would weep and sigh; At home above the God of love For aye their tears shall dry. They now enjoy their sabbath rest, The paschal banquet of the blest; The Lamb, their Lord, at festal board Himself is host and guest. 3 Then hail! ye mighty legions, yea, All hail! Now safe and blest for aye; And praise the Lord, who with His word Sustained you on the way. Ye did the joys of earth disdain, Ye toiled and sowed in tears and pain; Farewell, now bring your sheaves and sing Salvation's glad refrain. Swing high your palms, lift up your song, Yea, make it myriad voices strong: Eternally shall praise to Thee, God, and the Lamb belong! Used With Tune: [Behold a host arrayed in white]

If Christ Had Not Been Raised from Death

Author: Christopher Idle Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 7 hymnals Topics: All Saints Day Lyrics: 1 If Christ had not been raised from death our faith would be in vain, our preaching but a waste of breath, our sin and guilt remain. But now the Lord is risen indeed; he rules in earth and heaven: his gospel meets a world of need — in Christ we are forgiven. 2 If Christ still lay within the tomb then death would be the end, and we should face our final doom with neither guide nor friend. But now the Savior is raised up, so when a Christian dies we mourn, yet look to God in hope — in Christ the saints arise! 3 If Christ had not been truly raised his Church would live a lie; his name should nevermore be praised, his words deserve to die. But now our great Redeemer lives; through him we are restored: his word endures, his Church revives in Christ, our risen Lord. Scripture: 1 Corinthians 15:12-20 Used With Tune: [If Christ had not been raised from death]

Through all the changing scenes of life

Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 476 hymnals Topics: Year A All Saints' Day Lyrics: 1 Through all the changing scenes of life, in trouble and in joy, the praises of my God shall still my heart and tongue employ. 2 O magnify the Lord with me, with me exalt his name; when in distress to him I called, he to my rescue came. 3 The hosts of God encamp around the dwellings of the just; deliv'rance he affords to all who on his succour trust. 4 O make but trial of his love: experience will decide how blest are they, and only they, who in his truth confide. 5 Fear him, ye saints, and you will then have nothing else to fear; make you his service your delight, your wants shall be his care. 6 To Father, Son and Holy Ghost, the God whom we adore, be glory as it was, is now, and shall be evermore. Scripture: Psalm 34 Used With Tune: WILTSHIRE Text Sources: Psalm 34 in "New Version" (Tate and Brady, 1696)
