Hal H. Hopson

Texas, 1933) is a prolific composer, arranger, clinician, teacher and promoter of congregational song, with more than 1300 published works, especially of hymn and psalm arrangements, choir anthems, and creative ideas for choral and organ music in worship. Born in Texas, with degrees from Baylor University (BA, 1954), and Southern Baptist Seminary (MSM, 1956), he served churches in Nashville, TN, and most recently at Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church in Dallas, Texas. He has served on national boards of the Presbyterian Association of Musicians and the Choristers Guild, and taught numerous workshops at various national conferences. In 2009, a collection of sixty four of his hymn tunes were published in Hymns for Our Time: The Collected Tunes of Hal H. Hopson. Emily Brink

Joseph Haydn

1732 - 1809 Person Name: Franz J. Haydn, 1732-1809 Hymnal Number: 88 Composer of "CREATION" in Sing! A New Creation Franz Joseph Haydn (b. Rohrau, Austria, 1732; d. Vienna, Austria, 1809) Haydn's life was relatively uneventful, but his artistic legacy was truly astounding. He began his musical career as a choirboy in St. Stephen's Cathedral, Vienna, spent some years in that city making a precarious living as a music teacher and composer, and then served as music director for the Esterhazy family from 1761 to 1790. Haydn became a most productive and widely respected composer of symphonies, chamber music, and piano sonatas. In his retirement years he took two extended tours to England, which resulted in his "London" symphonies and (because of G. F. Handel's influence) in oratorios. Haydn's church music includes six great Masses and a few original hymn tunes. Hymnal editors have also arranged hymn tunes from various themes in Haydn's music. Bert Polman

Marty Haugen

A New Creation Marty Haugen (b. 1950), is a prolific liturgical composer with many songs included in hymnals across the liturgical spectrum of North American hymnals and beyond, with many songs translated into different languages. He was raised in the American Lutheran Church, received a BA in psychology from Luther College, yet found his first position as a church musician in a Roman Catholic parish at a time when the Roman Catholic Church was undergoing profound liturgical and musical changes after Vatican II. Finding a vocation in that parish to provide accessible songs for worship, he continued to compose and to study, receiving an MA in pastoral studies at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul Minnesota. A number of liturgical settings were prepared for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and more than 400 of his compositions are available from several publishers, especially GIA Publications, who also produced some 30 recordings of his songs. He is composer-in-residence at Mayflower Community Congregational Church in Minneapolis and continues to compose and travel to speak and teach at worship events around the world. Emily Brink

Howard Hughes

b. 1930 Person Name: Howard Hughes, b. 1930 Hymnal Number: 240 Composer of "BAPTIZED IN CHRIST" in Sing! A New Creation In his letter of invitation to Brother Howard Hughes, the President of NPM, J. Michael McMahon, declared, “Board Members agreed unanimously that you have created compositions for the liturgy that are beautiful, delightful, and spirited, and that have fostered strong participation by the worshiping assembly as they pray the texts you have set to music.” The Marianist composer’s first published work was “Mass for Peace” which appeared in Peoples Mass Book, 1964 edition, released by World Library Publications. As liturgical celebration developed in the English vernacular following the Second Vatican Council, Brother Howard produced a wide range of liturgical compositions published by WLP, GIA, ICEL, OCP, LTP, CFCW, FDLC, USCC, RP, NPM, Presbyterian Church USA, and The United Methodist Hymnal Companion. And at the age of 81 he is still composing and accepting commissions for special events. A Marianist religious for 64 years, this distinguished liturgical musician and composer began as a high teacher of French and director of high school choral groups. In addition Brother Howard also sang in symphonic choruses in New York and in Baltimore. He commented that “conducting high school choral concerts and singing with adult symphonic choruses have been a great help in learning to write music.” The National Association of Pastoral Musicians will honor Brother Howard Hughes, S.M., as Pastoral Musician of the Year when it gathers for its national convention in Washington, DC, July 29 – August 2, 2012. Jakob Hintze

1622 - 1702 Person Name: Jakob Hintze, 1622-1702 Hymnal Number: 14 Harmonizer of "SALZBURG" in Sing! A New Creation Partly as a result of the Thirty Years' War and partly to further his musical education, Jakob Hintze (b. Bernau, Germany, 1622; d. Berlin, Germany, 1702) traveled widely as a youth, including trips to Sweden and Lithuania. In 1659 he settled in Berlin, where he served as court musician to the Elector of Brandenburg from 1666 to 1695. Hintze is known mainly for his editing of the later editions of Johann Crüger's Praxis Pietatis Melica, to which he contributed some sixty-five of his original tunes. Bert Polman

Naida Hearn

1944 - 2001 Person Name: Naida Hearn, 1944-2001 Hymnal Number: 114 Author of "Jesus, Name Above All Names" in Sing! A New Creation Naida Anita O’Hara Hearn New Zealand 1931-2001. Born in north New Zealand (town not found), she was the daughter of a music conductor and learned to play piano, teaching it through most of her life. She was raised Methodist when young, but in later life attended the New Life Pentecostal Church at Palmerston North, Manawatu-Whanganui, New Zealand. An accomplished pianist, she played piano for the large church and directed a small choir. She married Henry William (Bill) Edward Hearn (1933-1999), and they had two children: Tony and Warick. They lived at Autearoa, Oceania, NZ. The marriage was not a happy one, especially after her husband joined the Jehovah’s Witnesses. She was treated poorly in the marriage. In 1974, while doing laundry, she was contemplating the various names of Jesus, and had listed some of them. Suddenly she just started singing, the words and music coming together. She stopped and wrote the words down, then went to her piano and played the tune, stating the Holy Spirit had given her both. She insisted that the song should be sung slowly, softly, and reverently.. that God wanted it that way. Later in life, she managed to leave her husband and live on her own at a retirement community after receiving royalties from her song. She was an important part of that retirement community. She composed several other songs as well. John Perry
