It came upon the midnight clear

Author: Edmund H. Sears, 1810-1876 Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 878 hymnals Lyrics: 1. It came upon the midnight clear, that glorious song of old, from angels bending near the earth to touch their harps of gold: "Peace on the earth, good will to men, from heaven's all-gracious King." The world in solemn stillness lay, to hear the angels sing. 2. Still through the cloven skies they come with peaceful wings unfurled, and still their heavenly music floats o'er all the weary world; above its sad and lowly plains they bend on hovering wing, and ever o'er its Babel-sounds the blessed angels sing. 3. Yet with the woes of sin and strife the world has suffered long; beneath the heavenly hymn have rolled two thousand years of wrong; and warring humankind hears not the tidings which they bring; O hush the noise and cease your strife and hear the angels sing! 4. For lo! the days are hastening on, by prophets seen of old, when with the ever-circling years shall come the time foretold, when peace shall over all the earth its ancient splendors fling, and the whole world give back the song which now the angels sing. I love thy kingdom, Lord

Author: Timothy Dwight , 1725-1817 Meter: 6.6.8.6 Appears in 1,334 hymnals Lyrics: 1 I love thy kingdom, Lord, the house of thine abode, the Church our blest Redeemer saved with his own precious blood. 2 For her my tears shall fall; for her my prayers ascend; to her my cares and toils be given, till toils and cares shall end. 3 Beyond my highest joy I prize her heavenly ways, her sweet communion, solemn vows, her hymns of love and praise. 4 Jesus, thou friend divine, our Savior and our King, thy hand from every snare and foe shall great deliverance bring. 5 Sure as thy truth shall last, to Zion shall be given the brightest glories earth can yield, and brighter bliss of heaven. I know not where the road will lead

Author: Evelyn Atwater Cummins, 1891-1971 Hymnal: EH1982 #647 (1985) Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Lyrics: 1 I know not where the road will lead I follow day by day, or where it ends: I only know I walk the King's highway. I know not if the way is long, and no one else can say; but rough or smooth, up hill or down, I walk the King's highway. 2 And some I love have reached the end, but some with me may stay, their faith and hope still guiding me: I walk the King's highway. The way is truth, the way is love, for light and strength I pray, and through the years of life, to God I walk the King's highway. 3 The countless hosts lead on before, I must not fear nor stray; with them, the pilgrims of the faith, I walk the King's highway. Through light and dark the road leads on till dawns the endless day, when I shall know why in this life I walk the King's highway. Topics: The Christian Life Languages: English Tune Title: LARAMIE

I sought the Lord, and afterward I knew

Author: Anon. Hymnal: EH1982 #689 (1985) Meter: 10.10.10.6 Lyrics: 1 I sought the Lord, and afterward I knew he moved my soul to seek him, seeking me; it was not I that found, O Savior true; no, I was found of thee. 2 Thou didst reach forth thy hand and mine enfold; I walked and sank not on the storm-vexed sea; 'twas not so much that I on thee took hold, as thou, dear Lord, on me. 3 I find, I walk, I love, but oh, the whole of love is but my answer, Lord, to thee; for thou wert long beforehand with my soul, always thou lovedst me. I heard the voice of Jesus say

Author: Horatius Bonar, 1808-1889 Hymnal: EH1982 #692 (1985) Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Lyrics: 1 I heard the voice of Jesus say, "Come unto me and rest; and in your weariness lay down your head upon my breast." I came to Jesus as I was, so weary, worn, and sad; I found in him a resting place, and he has made me glad. 2 I heard the voice of Jesus say, "Behold, I freely give the living water; thirsty one, stoop down and drink, and live." I came to Jesus, and I drank of that life-giving stream; my thirst was quenched, my soul revived, and now I live in him. 3 I heard the voice of Jesus say, "I am this dark world's light; look unto me, your morn shall rise, and all your day be bright." I looked to Jesus, and I found in him my Star, my Sun; and in that light of life I'll walk till pilgrim days are done. Topics: The Christian Life Languages: English Tune Title: THE THIRD TUNE

Jessie Seymour Irvine

1836 - 1887 Person Name: Jesse Seymour Irvine, 1836-1887 Hymnal Number: 663 Composer of "CRIMOND" in The Hymnal 1982 Jessie Seymour Irvine United Kingdom 1836-1887. Born at Dunnottar, Kincardineshire, Scotland, the daughter of a parish minister of the Church of Scotland who served at Dunottar, Peterhead, and Crimond in Aberdeenshire, she became an organist, in training at the town of Banff. In 1871, while living in Crimond, she composed a tune for the metrical version of Psalm 23 as an exercise for a composition class. It was first performed at evening worship at Auchterless Parish Church. Not satisfied with her own work, she asked for help to reharmonize it from musician, David Grant, from Aberdeen. At the time, Grant was collaborating with associates compiling hymns and metrical Psalms from across north Scotland intending to publish them in a new hymnal. “The Northern Psalter” was published in 1872, became popular, and over 70,000 copies were sold. For years the hymn tune was credited to Grant, but Jessie’s sister wrote a letter to the hymnal editors claiming her sister wrote the tune, harmonized by Grant. She is now credited by most as the original composer. She died in Aberdeen, Scotland. She is commemorated by a set of four etched glass panels installed inside Crimond Parish Church in 2002. The hymn was played at Princess Elizabeth’s wedding (later Queen Elizabeth) to Philip Mountbatten in 1947. John Perry
