Savior! I Follow On

Author: Charles S. Robinson Meter: 10.10.12.10 Appears in 126 hymnals First Line: Savior! I follow on, guided by Thee Lyrics: 1. Savior! I follow on, guided by Thee, Seeing not yet the hand that leadeth me; Hushed be my heart and still, fear I no further ill; Only to meet Thy will my will shall be. 2. Riven the rock for me thirst to relieve, Manna from Heaven falls fresh every eve; Never a want severe causeth my eye a tear, But Thou dost whisper near, Only believe! 3. Often to Marah’s brink have I been brought; Shrinking the cup to drink, help I have sought; And with the prayer’s ascent, Jesus the branch hath rent— Quickly relief hath sent, sweetening the draught. 4. Savior! I long to walk closer with Thee; Led by Thy guiding hand ever to be; Constantly near Thy side, quickened and purified, Living for Him who died freely for me! Used With Tune: BETHANY (Mason) Text Sources: Songs of the Church, 1862

Savior, Thy Dying Love

Author: Sylvanus D. Phelps Meter: 10.10.12.10 Appears in 558 hymnals First Line: Savior, Thy dying love Thou gavest me Lyrics: 1. Savior, Thy dying love Thou gavest me. Nor should I aught withhold, dear Lord, from Thee. In love my soul would bow, my heart fulfill its vow, Some offering bring Thee now, something for Thee. 2. O’er the blest mercy seat, pleading for me, My feeble faith looks up, Jesus, to Thee. Help me the cross to bear, Thy wondrous love declare, Some song to raise, or prayer, something for Thee. 3. Give me a faithful heart, likeness to Thee. That each departing day henceforth may see Some work of love begun, some deed of kindness done, Some wanderer sought and won, something for Thee. 4. All that I am and have, Thy gifts so free, In joy, in grief, through life, O Lord, for Thee! And when Thy face I see, my ransomed soul shall be Through all eternity, something for Thee. Used With Tune: SOMETHING FOR JESUS Text Sources: First appeared in the Watchman and Reflector, Volume XLV, No. 11 (Boston, Massachusetts: 1864). The original first line was "Something, my God, for Thee"

William F. Sherwin

1826 - 1888 Person Name: William Fiske Sherwin Meter: 10.10.12.10 Composer of "YUKON" in The Cyber Hymnal Sherwin, William Fisk, an American Baptist, was born at Buckland, Massachusetts, March 14,1826. His educational opportunities, so far as schools were concerned, were few, but he made excellent use of his time and surroundings. At fifteen he went to Boston and studied music under Dr. Mason: In due course he became a teacher of vocal music, and held several important appointments in Massachusetts; in Hudson and Albany, New York County, and then in New York City. Taking special interest in Sunday Schools, he composed carols and hymn-tunes largely for their use, and was associated with the Rev. R. Lowry and others in preparing Bright Jewels, and other popular Sunday School hymn and tune books. A few of his melodies are known in Great Britain through I. D. Sankey's Sacred Songs and Solos, where they are given with his signature. His hymnwriting was limited. The following pieces are in common use:— 1. Grander than ocean's story (1871). The Love of God. 2. Hark, bark, the merry Christmas bells. Christmas Carol. 3. Lo, the day of God is breaking. The Spiritual Warfare. 4. Wake the song of joy and gladness. Sunday School or Temperance Anniversary. 5. Why is thy faith, 0 Child of God, so small. Safety in Jesus. Mr. Sherwin died at Boston, Massachusetts, April 14, 1888. -- John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology (1907) ================== Sherwin, W. F., p. 1055, i. Another hymn from his Bright Jewels, 1869, p. 68, is "Sound the battle cry" (Christian Courage), in the Sunday School Hymnary, 1905, and several other collections. --John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology, New Supplement (1907)

Arthur Sullivan

1842 - 1900 Person Name: Arthur Seymour Sullivan Meter: 10.10.12.10 Composer of "ST. EDMUND (Sullivan)" in The Cyber Hymnal Arthur Seymour Sullivan (b Lambeth, London. England. 1842; d. Westminster, London, 1900) was born of an Italian mother and an Irish father who was an army bandmaster and a professor of music. Sullivan entered the Chapel Royal as a chorister in 1854. He was elected as the first Mendelssohn scholar in 1856, when he began his studies at the Royal Academy of Music in London. He also studied at the Leipzig Conservatory (1858-1861) and in 1866 was appointed professor of composition at the Royal Academy of Music. Early in his career Sullivan composed oratorios and music for some Shakespeare plays. However, he is best known for writing the music for lyrics by William S. Gilbert, which produced popular operettas such as H.M.S. Pinafore (1878), The Pirates of Penzance (1879), The Mikado (1884), and Yeomen of the Guard (1888). These operettas satirized the court and everyday life in Victorian times. Although he composed some anthems, in the area of church music Sullivan is best remembered for his hymn tunes, written between 1867 and 1874 and published in The Hymnary (1872) and Church Hymns (1874), both of which he edited. He contributed hymns to A Hymnal Chiefly from The Book of Praise (1867) and to the Presbyterian collection Psalms and Hymns for Divine Worship (1867). A complete collection of his hymns and arrangements was published posthumously as Hymn Tunes by Arthur Sullivan (1902). Sullivan steadfastly refused to grant permission to those who wished to make hymn tunes from the popular melodies in his operettas. Bert Polman

Small Church Music

Meter: 10.10.12.10 Editors: Fanny Crosby Description: The SmallChurchMusic site was launched in 2006, growing out of the requests from those struggling to provide suitable music for their services and meetings. Rev. Clyde McLennan was ordained in mid 1960’s and was a pastor in many small Australian country areas, and therefore was acutely aware of this music problem. Having also been trained as a Pipe Organist, recordings on site (which are a subset of the smallchurchmusic.com site) are all actually played by Clyde, and also include piano and piano with organ versions. All recordings are in MP3 format. Churches all around the world use the recordings, with downloads averaging over 60,000 per month. The recordings normally have an introduction, several verses and a slowdown on the last verse. Users are encouraged to use software: Audacity (http://www.audacityteam.org) or Song Surgeon (http://songsurgeon.com) (see http://scm-audacity.weebly.com for more information) to adjust the MP3 number of verses, tempo and pitch to suit their local needs. Copyright notice: Rev. Clyde McLennan, performer in this collection, has assigned his performer rights in this collection to Hymnary.org. Non-commercial use of these recordings is permitted.
